The Silent Victory Of Repaying Evil With Good

We live in a world and in an era where people are too quick to pay evil with evil. But the question is, if you join others to pay evil with evil, how will you become different from the rest of the world? It is true that in life, a lot of offences will come; people may even betray you, hurt your feelings, or do you wrong, which your natural instincts might just be to take your revenge or retaliate. In fact, at that point, you might even see it as a thing of self-worth to do them back and "pay them in their own coin" just to prove your strength and protect your pride. However, true strength does not lie in paying evil with evil, but it is in paying with good - this is where true strength and maturity lie.

You do not achieve true victory by defeating others through revenge. Victory is not necessarily a function of defeating people with revenge, but it is achieved when you have risen above evil with your acts of good. With the way the world is becoming offensive on a daily basis, you can only make a difference when you introduce goodness. After all, you cannot win darkness by following it up with another darkness, but by bringing in light. However, any amount of light you introduce will actually be very significant to making the room brighter. Similarly, you can make the world around you better by your acts of goodness.

I have come to realise that when someone does good to the person that has wronged them, they will take control of the situation, and become on top of the game. When you have mastered the art of not paying evil with evil, then you have gotten to a point that you are no longer moved by emotions, or held captive in a cycle of hatred, but you have become free from the power of the offender. When someone does wrong to you and they are expecting anger and revenge from you, if you play into their hands, then you will become easily predictable and they can control you at will. But when you follow them with goodness, they will become confused and disappointed because they will not know the source of your strength, and you would have disarmed them.

This can actually be applied in a lot of real life scenarios. For example, when someone raises their voice at you and even speaks harshly at you, if you respond calmly with respect and ethics, then you are the winner. There are many ways by which someone can win a battle, and one of them is to know when not to engage in any battle at all. There are some wars that are not worth engaging in or fighting - not only will it bring enmity and hatred, but it will also take more from you than it will ever give to you. Hatred has weight and can weigh someone down, but forgiveness lifts one up. More so, forgiveness and doing kindness build one's character and make them better. It also builds inner strength and character. The more you think of an action before doing it, even in the face of an active provocation, then you are conditioning your mind to overcome the limitations of the mind.

Repaying evil with good aligns with the demands and principles of humanity. I once attended a fellowship where the speaker made a statement that made so much meaning to me, he said " how people treat you is a function of who they are, but how you treat people is a function of who you are." That is, if they treat you badly, it only shows that they are not good people. But your responses of goodness or kindness will show that you are indeed a good person with a good heart. You may not be able to stop completely offences nor determine how others will act towards you, but one thing you can determine, which is within your choices to make, is how to respond to offences. Trust me, taking revenge will not make you feel better in the long run because it often comes with regrets.
