A Wednesday Walk Around Davidson Park

This week’s walk was one that went around some very large boulders in the Driftless Area. Very large boulders, indeed. How did these boulders manage to end up in the middle of a town park, located in the middle of a bunch of farm fields? I wish I could tell you aliens…but alas, no such luck.

The park I was able to visit is called Davidson Park. The park is part of a sleepy, small community settled by Norwegian immigrants, years ago, called Westby, Wisconsin. The park has a few picnic tables, a small playground, a few charcoal grills, and a shelter…but the best part of the park are all the historical boulders scattered about.

Lots of local “rock climbers” have come to appreciate this park for its opportunity to boulder. There aren’t many spots in this part of the world for bouldering, but this place seems to come out of nowhere. The rocks are left over remnants from the Ice Ages. Once the glaciers melted, the water melt brought tons of remnants of demolished mountains from Northern Wisconsin and Northern Minnesota to this part of Wisconsin. If you ever have the opportunity to travel this part of the world, you’ll see the occasional large, sandstone boulder hanging out in the middle of nowhere. So yeah, no aliens required to move these large objects thousands of years ago. Just a lot of glacial melt water moving thousands of pounds of rocks across this area, thousands of years ago.

Quite the spot! And with no Crocs on this week, I had to skip the foot photo! Maybe next time I'll wear some proper rock climbing shoes to give it a go...maybe...
