Turul above the city of Tatabánya

Hello everyone!

Today I'd like to introduce you to a somewhat unusual tourist destination. It's a hill above the Hungarian town of Tatabánya, home to a statue of the mythical Turul bird. The town itself and the hill are located about 60 km west of Budapest, on the M1 motorway from Vienna to Budapest. We happened upon it while driving from Brno to the Hungarian capital at the request of a friend who wanted to see the statue up close.

Dziś chciałbym przedstawić trochę nietypowe miejsce turystyczne. Jest to wzgórze nad węgierskim miastem Tatabánya na którym znajduje się pomnik mitycznego ptaka Turul. Samo miasto i wzgórze znajduje się ok 60 km na zachód od Budapesztu przy autostradzie M1 prowadzącej z Wiednia do Budapesztu. My trafiliśmy tam jadąc z Brna do stolicy Węgier na życzenie kolegi, który chciał z bliska zobaczyć ten pomnik.

There are nearly 200 preserved Turul statues in Hungary. This particular monument was built in 1907 to commemorate the Battle of Banhida in 907. Due to its size and hilltop location, it is easily accessible from the city and the highway.

Na Węgrzech zachowało się prawie 200 posągów Turula. Ten konkretny pomnik powstał w 1907 roku i miał upamiętnić bitwę pod Bánhidą z 907 roku. Ze względu na wielkość i na położenie na wzgórzu, jest dobrze z miasta i autostrady.

The turul is a mythical bird (likely representing a falcon or eagle) that appears frequently in many Hungarian legends. It was the ancestral symbol of the Árpád dynasty, which ruled the Principality of Hungary in the 9th and 10th centuries and the Kingdom of Hungary from 1000 to 1301.

Turul to mityczny ptak (prawdopodobnie przedstawia sokoła lub orła), często pojawia się w wielu węgierskich legendach. Był symbolem rodowym dynastii Arpadów, która rządziła Księstwem Węgierskim w IX i X wieku oraz Królestwem Węgierskim od 1000 do 1301 roku.

There is a parking lot near the monument and a place for a family picnic, which several families took advantage of.

Blisko pomnika jest parking oraz miejsce na np. rodzinny piknik, z którego skorzystało wtedy kilka rodzin.

We probably arrived there at the perfect time, between sunset and dusk. Initially, we could look around from the hill at the surrounding area, but after a few minutes, the monument was illuminated, making it look much more interesting and allowing me to take these shots.

My trafiliśmy tam chyba w najlepszym momencie, pomiędzy zachodem słońca a zmierzchem. Na początku mogliśmy się rozejrzeć ze wzgórza na okolicę, a po kilku minutach pomnik został oświetlony, dzięki czemu wyglądał dużo ciekawiej i mogłem wykonać takie ujęcia.

The monument has a 15-meter wingspan and is said to be the largest bird monument in Europe.

Pomnik ma 15 metrów rozpiętości skrzydeł i podobno jest to największy pomnik ptaka w Europie.

There's another viewpoint with a cross near Turul. It is located less than 100 m as the crow flies south of the monument and is accessed via a well-trodden path that may not be suitable for small children.

Niedaleko Turula jest też inne miejsce widokowe z postawionym krzyżem. Jest ono położone niecałe 100 m w linii prostej na południe od pomnika i prowadzi do niego wydeptana ścieżka, która może nie być odpowiednia dla małych dzieci.

It was from this place that I took these two photos overlooking the city of Tatabánya.

Z tego właśnie miejsca wykonałem te dwa zdjęcia z widokiem na miasto Tatabánya.

Less than 300 meters as the crow flies north of Turul is the Szelim Cave, but we didn't go there. We still had to reach our accommodation in Budapest.
Overall, it's an interesting place to take a short break while passing by.

Niecałe 300 m w linii prostej na północ od Turula jest natomiast jaskinia Szelim, ale do niej już nie poszliśmy. Musieliśmy jeszcze dotrzeć do miejsca noclegowego w Budapeszcie.
Ogólnie jest to ciekawe miejsce, aby zrobić sobie małą przerwę w podróży przejeżdżając obok tego miejsca.
