The Bastei in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains (24 photos)

Hello everyone!

After a quick tour of Dresden in south-eastern Germany, I set off with friends on a further journey by car to the Czech Republic. However, before we crossed the German-Czech border, we made one more stop to visit one of the biggest tourist attractions of the Saxon Switzerland National Park, where in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains there is the Bastei rock formation with many viewpoints and an interesting bridge. This place has been a tourist attraction for over 200 years. There are many photos of this place on the internet.
There is a paid car park in the area, from which it is about 2 km to this place. This section can be covered on foot or by a paid bus. We chose the option on foot, although the costs were not high. There is also a restaurant on site.

Witam wszystkich!

My wybraliśmy opcję pieszo, choć koszty nie były duże. Na miejscu jest też restauracja.

In 1826, a wooden bridge was built here for tourism purposes.

W 1826 roku na potrzeby turystyki został tutaj wybudowany drewniany most.

In 1851, the present sandstone bridge was built in place of the wooden bridge.

The length of the bridge is 76.5 meters.

Długość mostu wynosi 76,5 metra.

The name Bastei comes from the name of the rock with a height of 305 meters above sea level and 194 meters above the surface of the river Elbe.

From above you can see the village of Rathen, which is situated on both sides of the river Elbe.

The Elbe in this area has several bends.

Łaba w tej okolicy posiada kilka zakrętów.

The rock formations above the river are actually vertical.

Formacje skalne nad rzeką są właściwie pionowe.

The bridge was built on seven arches and 40 meters above the gorge.

Most został zbudowany na siedmiu łukach i 40 metrów nad wąwozem.

Although the main attraction of this place is the bridge itself, all the rock formations around are also impressive.

It is worth going to various viewpoints and seeing all these rocks from them.

RSphotos-RS_P7386_1280.jpg

Due to the height and vertical walls, it is an interesting and wonderful sight.

I love it!! It’s like from another world!! The mountains look like hands, fingers!! I recently watched the movie “Troll”, and these mountains make me remember the landscape in the story. Stunning! Lucky you for being able to see that in the real life!!

When a friend who organized the trip showed a photo with the information that we can stop there on the way, I immediately knew that I wanted to see it live. It was worth it :)
