Photo Trip | Croatia - Fort Bourguignon (Fort Monsival) in Pula

Fort Bourguignon (Fort Monsival) in Pula is a place I visited by chance. After a few hours of exploring the coast in the southwestern part of Pula, my friends and I went our separate ways. For the rest of the day, I walked around and explored that part of the city on my own. Since I didn’t have a specific plan for what else I wanted to see, I checked Google Maps on my phone to see what was nearby and found this fort. I didn't hesitate for long and moved towards him.

Przez resztę dnia spacerowałem i zwiedzałem tę część miasta samotnie. Ponieważ nie miałem dokładnego planu co chciałbym jeszcze zobaczyć, zajrzałem do telefonu na Google Maps aby zobaczyć co jest w mojej okolicy i znalazłem ten fort. Długo się nie zastanawiałem i ruszyłem w jego kierunku.

The fort is located on a hill and is at least partially fenced off. Even with the map on my phone, it took me a while to climb the hill and find the entrance to the fort grounds. The entrance was on the southeast side, and in front of it there is a parking lot and barriers blocking access to the fort grounds. Once I arrived, it turned out there were no other visitors, so I was able to explore the place on my own in peace. This was likely due to the fort’s location, which is outside the city center.

Fort znajduje się na wzgórzu i przynajmniej częściowo jest ogrodzony. Pomimo mapy na telefonie, trochę mi zajęło wejście na górę i znalezienie wejścia na teren twierdzy. Wejście było od strony południowo-wschodniej, a przed nim jest parking i szlabany blokujące wjazd na teren fortu. Po znalezieniu się na miejscu okazało się, że nie było tam innych osób i mogłem spokojnie samotnie zwiedzać to miejsce. Zapewne wynikało to z miejsca, w którym położony jest fort, czyli poza centrum miasta.

At the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries, it was the site of some of the most famous rave parties on the eastern coast of the Adriatic.

Na przełomie XX i XXI wieku było to miejsce jednych z najsłynniejszych imprez rave na wschodnim wybrzeżu Adriatyku.

The fort was built in the 19th century (1861–66) by the Austrian Empire. Its purpose was to protect the port. There are many similar forts in Pula. The entrance to the fort was protected by a moat with a drawbridge and two flanking caponiers. It is likely that at that time the fort was armed with Austrian 305 mmm (12 in) cannons. These cannons gained fame during World War I.

Fort został zbudowany w XIX wieku (1861-66) przez Cesarstwo Austriackie. Celem była ochrona portu. Podobnych twierdz jest sporo w Puli. Wejście do fortu było chronione fosą z mostem zwodzonym oraz przez dwie flankujące kaponiery. Prawdopodobnie w tamtym okresie fort był uzbrojony w austriackie armaty kalibru 305 mmm (12 in). Wspomniane armaty zyskały sławę podczas I wojny światowej.

As you can see in the photos, the fortress is currently in a state of serious disrepair. While exploring on my own, I took quite a few photos here and had a bit of a dilemma deciding which ones to include in this post.

Obecnie, jak można zauważyć na zdjęciach, twierdza jest mocno zniszczona. Zwiedzając samotnie wykonałem tutaj sporo zdjęć i miałem mały dylemat, które z nich wybrać do tego postu.

Whether it's worth adding them to your list of places to visit probably depends on whether you like this kind of place. I'm glad we split up back then so I could take the opportunity to explore this place.

Czy warto dodać je do swojej listy miejsc wartych do odwiedzenia, to chyba zależy czy ktoś lubi tego typu miejsca. Ja cieszę się, że wtedy się rozdzieliliśmy i mogłem przy okazji zwiedzić to miejsce.
