Sungei Wang Plaza 45th anniversary

Sungei Wang Plaza mall is one of the iconic and legendary place in Kuala Lumpur. I know that the mall has been around since my teenage years. But I didn't know that it has been around for more than 40 years.

There is even a phrase that is popular among the locals which is:

If you have not been to Sungei Wang Plaza, you have not been to Kuala Lumpur - KLrian

Recently, I was at Sungei Wang Plaza to purchase a new spectacle fory daughter. While I was there, I noticed there are three dioramas been displayed at the main entrance.

All three dioramas was placed inside a display case. Based on the title on the display case, this means in the year 2022, Sungei Wang Plaza has celebrated its 45th years

An old scenery pictures of Sungei Wang Plaza mall was put at each of the dioramas. On each pictures, there are a brief explanation of where it was taken at the mall.

Diorama #1 - Ice Skating Rink

Apparently Sungei Wang Plaza has the first olympic-size ice skating rink in Malaysia. Opened to the public in the year 1977. I was not even born yet in the 70's 🤣😂

To be honest, I was surprised to know that there used to be an ice skating rink at Sungei Wang Plaza.

Diorama #2 - Cinema ticket counter

In the 70's most of cinema operated outside of malls. Such as the old Coliseum Cinema in Chow Kit. Where the cinema occupied one building by itself.

Then comes Sungei Wang Plaza who introduced the concept of indoor cinema to Malaysian. Nowadays, indoor cinema is a common thing.

Diorama #3 - scenery of Sungei Wang Plaza in the 70's

I'm sure the 70's and 80's is the glory days of Sungei Wang Plaza. The tale of the mall greatness even reach into my years. I myself still bringing my family to Sungei Wang Plaza.

But now only the first 3 floors of Sungei Wang Plaza is still busy with customers. Most of shops at the remaining 4 floors are closed because not much customer going up to that level.
