How many hours does a cat sleep?

Since the beginning of the day I find my cat sleeping, he has funny poses and very strange ways of sleeping. He has the ability to sleep for many hours a day. I have detailed that he sleeps for at least 3 hours at a time since I have seen him, gets up to eat and then goes back to sleep.

I never had a cat before, so it's new to me, in fact he came to my house when he was already big and then he never wanted to leave, nobody came for him and he never left. So I've always found that particularly my cat sleeps a lot, so I did some research and it turns out that a cat can sleep 12, 16 and 20 hours segmented during the day. So that's crazy.
