El Garrapatero Asurcado

Ese Día hacía frío y al asomarme al balcón pude ver a esta parejita que creo estaban tratando de darse calor, eran un par de Crotophaga Ani como se llaman científicamente; pero en Venezuela es conocido como Garrapatero Asurcado.

Estos amigos se encuentran por toda América Latina, forma parte de la familia de los Cuculídeos, estos amigos emplumados son aves de tamaño mediano que pueden llegar a medir entre 30 y 35 centímetros, su plumaje es prácticamente negro brillante en ocasiones se le pueden ver tonos azul o verdoso con la incidencia del sol, poseen un pico fuerte y corto, perfecto para comer insectos, algunos frutos, garrapatas de allí su nombre, esto los convierte en un gran amigo de los ganaderos jeje. Algo que los distingue es su cola larga que les da una forma elegante cuando emprenden vuelo, sus ojos son grandes.

El Garrapatero es un ave muy curiosa y activa, en varias ocasiones los he visto dar saltos cuando están al ras de suelo buscado alimento. Ese día se encontraban tranquilos posando para la foto, como les comenté antes era un día muy frío.

Otro rasgo que los distingue es su canto, es una mezcla de melodías y silbidos, eso los hace un ave fácil de identificar.

Una de las creencias más comunes es que es un ave mensajera de buenas noticias, asociados a la abundancia.

Aunque su estado de conservación es de preocupación menor, se ve amenazado por la perdida de su habitad por causa de la deforestación y porque cada vez ocupamos más sus espacios naturales, ya sea por la agricultura o por el urbanismo.

No puedo evitar imaginar una conversación entre los protagonistas de estas fotos sobre el frío que hace y poder tener un café caliente.

The Smooth-billed Ani

That day was cold, and when I peeked out onto the balcony, I saw this little couple that I think were trying to warm each other up. They were a pair of Crotophaga ani, as they are scientifically called; but in Venezuela, they are known as Garrapatero Asurcado.

These birds are found throughout Latin America and are part of the Cuculidae family. They are medium-sized birds that can measure between 30 and 35 centimeters. Their plumage is mostly shiny black, and sometimes you can see blue or green tones depending on the sunlight. They have a strong, short beak, perfect for eating insects, some fruits, and ticks—hence the name, which makes them great friends of cattle ranchers, haha. One distinguishing feature is their long tail, which gives them an elegant shape when they take flight, and they have large eyes.

The Garrapatero is a very curious and active bird. I’ve often seen them hopping around close to the ground looking for food. That day, they were calm, posing for the photo, as I mentioned earlier, it was a very cold day.

Another trait that sets them apart is their song, which is a mix of melodies and whistles, making them easy to identify. One common belief is that they are a messenger of good news, associated with abundance.

Although their conservation status is of minor concern, they are threatened by habitat loss due to deforestation and because we are increasingly encroaching on their natural spaces, whether through agriculture or urban development.

I can’t help but imagine a conversation between the subjects of these photos about how cold it is and how nice it would be to have a hot cup of coffee.
