The Cover & Impression
Yes, roaches will infest every nook and cranny of your home, possibly brick a particular device, punch holes in your clothes, and nibble on your food. Some even carry diseases, and it makes sense, I guess, they do live a "filthy" life.
Butterflies, however, are protected, admired. The abstract beauty does play a role here, but they're also less likely to infest your home. They may visit you, now and then, but they won't move in and try to live there rent-free.
Yet, the point isn't about insects and pests, their habitat, civilization, or their way of living.
The quote may not be so comprehensive or faultless, but I believe it wasn't really meant for the insects; rather, I'd say it's a jab, better suited to our very "humanly" ethos.
Because I doubt the insects are the ones out here discriminating or going through quotes of Nietzche on social media lol...
They say, to never judge a book by its cover; alas, a book is always judged by its cover.
It's an innate and very "human" way of looking at things, it's in our blood, and it's quite deep-rooted too. For most of my life, I've seen and experienced it all myself. My skin tone is a prime example.
Long story short, from my childhood days to my late teens, it was a daily routine of being despised by the light-skinned brown kids, for just being "brown-er" lol. My skin tone alone was enough to classify me under the "ugly" category. My above-average height didn't matter, even my silky luscious locks didn't add to my looks. I was fitter than many, and smarter in some aspects too, but they just couldn't care less. Sadly, I sensed the same energy in some seniors, and teachers too.
My skin color always seemed to be the biggest issue though, a huge "defect".
Yet, we were kids back then, so I let it slide, none of those memories affect me as much anymore.
You can't deny it though, looks do matter, it gives you an edge. An attractive person will always get "the pass" easier, than an unattractive person.
However, let's take material possessions, as an example.
A person who has a Rolex on the wrist will undoubtedly receive better treatment than the person who's rocking a Tissot. Both are great watches, both Swiss, but the Rolex just costs 10 times more. Now, you may argue that the person with the Rolex is more successful and has worked harder to achieve it all, and that may be true.
But, what if the Rolex is owned by a rich kid, who bought the watch with daddy's money? The Tissot owner, however, has bought it with their own "hard-earned" money.
Now, considering status and success, who "deserves" more respect?
On the face of it? For most people, it will again be the Rolex and its owner. Only a very few will consider having a second thought about it. Because who knows? The Tissot owner might have a Rolex too, the Tissot could just be their daily driver.
We are inadequately designed to judge a book by its cover, I do it too, and so do you; everyone does, to a degree.
But, since we are the ones holding the medal of honor, for being the "perfect" creation, the superior kind; we should practice and slowly veer away from such an innately flawed way of judgment and thinking.
I would not blame people for following the Rolex and it's owner but truly, we should not judge a book by its cover
The Rolex may not really mean anything
Yeah, could be a fake too. 🤔
