Luscious Locks

I really don't understand the hate the people of this region have for dudes with long hair. From the days of my childhood to now, things really haven't changed a bit. People here just don't seem to like the idea of a guy having hair that's long enough to touch their necks while covering their ears.

I grew up watching guys with long hair, TV shows, movies, videogames, my cousins even, they've all rocked the long hairdo and pulled it off well. So, I always wanted to at least grow my hair and see how it looks and feels.

Alas, my parents were always against it, even when I was reaching my 20s.

Our schools didn't make it any easier either, they were less strict about our studies and focused more on our hair. Even if our hair was of medium length, we'd have to hear some very common lines.

Dialogues such as...

"Only goons and criminals have long hair."
"Do you think you're some type of a movie star?"
"I can tell that your future isn't going to be bright."

How jolly, eh? Way to go! These are absolutely the type of motivational dialogues a 14 year old needs to hear. Bravo!

We weren't even in an army school, nor was bathing and sanitation an issue, then why the hell did every damn guy in school need to have the same old bowl cut? As if we were in some kind of a cult.

Now as I'm slowly reaching the age of 30, that "frightening" number everyone's so afraid of, at this age I'm still having to deal with people who are more worried about my hair than I am. Sigh!

There's nothing to worry about now, give me a F*CKING break already.

I didn't choose the path of the criminal, nor am I a druggie. Hell, I don't even smoke. The type of smoke I like is a smokey BBQ burger and the only type of powder I unknowingly snorted was a bit of pre-workout and whey protein powder when I was a hardcore musclehead.

So yeah, to all those miserable "teachers" and elders who were talking shit and had beef with a damn teenager, I'd say I'm doing quite alright. If only some of you could've taught us better and guided us properly, then maybe we would've been doing much better now, and we surely wouldn't have those scarring dialogues floating at the back of our heads.

What bothers me most isn't about the hair and how I look, it's about people being all up in my business. It's about the people who focus on such frivolous shit, when there are way more crucial things to talk or worry about. Even as a teen I could tell the difference between good and bad, my parents taught me that, and now I know the world even better. So, please let me make my own decisions. I've already lost a lot of time and resources listening to others and trying to please them, and I surely have learned my lesson.

For now as I dwell somewhere in the middle of work-stress and my personal life, my hair is actually the last thing I'm worried about. To be honest, it's not even that long, it barely even touches my neck lol. And at least I maintain it well, combing it to a certain style and shampooing every 2 to 3 days. This hairdo paired with my sharpened, yet scruffy bit of facial hair, I say I look pretty damn good. Even though I'm as sick as a dog right now lol.

I was trying to figure out if you're Nigerian or not because this complaint sounds very familiar 🤭 Men keeping long hair is something generally frowned upon here but it's always delightful for me when I see men do what they like with their hair

Men keeping long hair is something generally frowned upon

That's just sad. I'm actually from Bangladesh, and I believe my neighboring countries suffer from this hate for men with long hair too. Just let a man live their life, as long as no one's getting hurt because of my hair, I don't see any issues.

The day a person winds up in my luscious locks and strangles themselves to death, only then I'll maybe think about trimming my hair. 😂

It’s just some messed up societal shit. It’s annoying but you just deal with it. The only thing I hope you don’t have is a man bun LOL people with those around here are douche bags! Lol. I don’t think you would be but just making light of the foolish situation.

Be the change you want to see is a motto I am trying to live by. Doing things you want to see improve such as peoples attitudes towards hair is a good step!

Hell nawww! My hair isn't even long enough to put into a man bun. 😂

People in my country just have too much free time, so they dive their noses in other people's businesses way too often. If only they used that extra bit of time in being productive, then our nation would probably be doing a lot better.

Ya that’s the tough part about minimal gainful employment.

I’m glad you don’t have a man bun LOL

Hairs!!!
One of my teachers did cut our hair from the front as it was longer than their stated rules. Okay, that was school, they had rules, but I do still see the mindset you stated and to be honest, I don't care about them, lol. As far as my family is okay and satisfied with me, I am fine.

I don't care about them

No one cares, but these oldies need to get a life already. They worry too much about frivolous things.

As far as my family is okay and satisfied with me, I am fine.

That's really how it should be. No one else's opinions should matter much, especially if they're dinosaurs.
