Greetings Hivers.

"There isn't any."

A simple combination of words that has become all too common in today's Cuba. And I am not only talking about the shortage of food or other basic goods. I am talking about something much harder to find: hope.

It is something I notice more and more in the faces of the people I see on the streets. Sometimes I look back at photographs I took a few years ago, and the difference is striking, especially among the elderly. Their expressions seem heavier, more exhausted. Many times I do not even raise the camera. I simply do not feel like doing it.

Perhaps the situation is not as severe as I perceive it. Maybe it is just the perspective of someone who spends his days observing people. But this is what I find through my photography: older people wandering without a clear destination, with worn faces and tired steps, carrying far more than the weight of age.

Today's post is a bit sad. But it is not always possible to be cheerful when we pay attention to what is happening around us. Even so, I hope you enjoy the photographs I am sharing today.

Una lamentable combinación de palabras que se ha vuelto demasiado habitual en la Cuba actual. Y no hablo solamente de la escasez de comida o de cualquier otro producto. Hablo de algo más difícil de encontrar: la esperanza.

Eso es algo que noto cada vez más en los rostros de las personas que veo por la calle. A veces reviso fotografías tomadas hace algunos años y la diferencia resulta brutal, sobre todo en los ancianos. Sus expresiones parecen más pesadas, más cansadas. Muchas veces ni siquiera levanto la cámara. Simplemente no quiero hacerlo.

Quizás la situación no sea tan crítica como la percibo. Tal vez sea solo la mirada de quien camina observando constantemente a los demás. Pero eso es lo que encuentro en mi trabajo fotográfico: personas mayores que parecen andar sin rumbo, con rostros demacrados y pasos lentos, como si cargaran mucho más que el peso de los años.

El post de hoy tiene un tono algo triste. Pero no siempre se puede estar alegre cuando miramos con atención lo que sucede a nuestro alrededor. Aun así, espero que disfruten las fotografías que les traigo hoy.
