Hello Hivers 🐿

I have been living partially in Nuevo Vedado for around twenty years, and something that surprised me the first time was seeing squirrels living in the trees of the neighborhood. There is quite a large colony and they are mostly seen early in the morning when they come down from the branches to pick seeds and fruits from the ground.

Squirrels are not native to Cuba. People who have lived here for a long time say that one day some escaped from the Zoo and eventually reproduced freely. I have already seen several families eating very close to me and I owe them a proper photo session.

Today I want to share some photos of these beautiful animals, but in a less friendly environment. These are the ones that could not escape and still live behind the bars of the zoo. They looked at me as if asking for help, and the saddest part is that there are also free squirrels living in the zoo trees. They come close to the cages and look at their captive sisters from a distance.

We know we should not humanize animals, but it is impossible not to think that maybe they long for the freedom of those living outside.

Llevo alrededor de veinte años viviendo parcialmente en Nuevo Vedado, y algo que me sorprendió la primera vez fue ver ardillas viviendo en los árboles de la zona. Hay una colonia bastante grande y se dejan ver sobre todo temprano en la mañana cuando bajan de las ramas a recoger semillas y frutos del suelo.

Las ardillas no son originales de Cuba. Los vecinos que llevan más tiempo viviendo allí cuentan que un día algunas se escaparon del Zoológico y terminaron reproduciéndose en libertad. Yo mismo he visto varias familias comiendo cerca de mí y les tengo prometida una sesión de fotos.

Hoy quiero compartir algunas fotos de estos animalitos preciosos, pero en un ambiente no tan amable. Son las que no lograron escapar y aún viven tras las rejas del zoológico. Me miraban atentamente como pidiendo ayuda, y lo más triste es que en los árboles del mismo zoológico también viven ardillas libres que se acercan a la jaula y observan a sus hermanas en cautiverio. Sabemos que no debemos humanizar a los animales, pero es imposible no pensar que quizás añoren la libertad que ven tan cerca.
