A few days ago I had to go to Guanabo, a town on the outskirts of the city where you can find what are probably the most beautiful beaches in Havana. Of course I went with my camera in hand, ready to make some landscapes, taking advantage of the fact that the beach was almost empty because of the cold weather. But suddenly I saw a man, already advanced in age, walking out of the water. He reminded me of Aquaman, but not nearly as muscular. He was thin, weathered and wild looking.

People know him as Mirringa and according to him he is the last of a small lineage native to Guanabo. He has spent his entire life making a living from fishing, something he has done for as long as he can remember. You can tell he is carved by the salt of the sea, with a marine experience that shows in every gesture. He told me which fish are better than others and the right time to catch them. This time he was fishing in the river because he was recovering from the chikungunya virus and didn’t have the strength to spend hours on a boat. So he came out with a string of river fish that looked delicious. But they were not for his family’s dinner, they were for selling so he could buy oil and other things. He told me that before he even reached the street he had already sold everything. And he seemed like a prophet because indeed someone bought everything before he even stepped off the sand.

Meanwhile, I was craving a good “minuta” but I didn’t want to put my camera down. Here I share with you some of the photos I made of Mirringa, the last of his kind. Hope you enjoy them, I’ll read you in the comments.

Hace unos días tuve que ir a Guanabo, un pueblo en las afueras de la ciudad donde están probablemente las playas más bonitas de La Habana. Por supuesto fui con la cámara en la mano dispuesto a hacer unos paisajes aprovechando que la playa estaba casi desierta por el frío. Pero de repente vi a un hombre, un señor ya entrado en años, que salía del agua caminando. Me recordó a Aquaman, pero no tan musculoso. Más bien delgado, curtido y algo desaliñado.

A él se le conoce como Mirringa y según me contó es el último de una pequeña casta oriunda de Guanabo. Ha pasado toda su vida buscándose la vida pescando, algo que hace desde que tiene memoria. Se nota que está curtido en la sal del mar, con una experiencia marina que impresiona. Me explicó cuáles peces son mejores que otros y cuándo es el momento ideal para cogerlos. Esta vez estaba pescando en el río porque estaba recuperándose del virus del chikungunya y no tenía fuerzas para pasar horas en un bote. Así que salió con una ensarta de peces de río que se veían deliciosos. Pero no eran para comer en su casa, eran para venderlos y así comprar aceite y otras cosas. Me dijo que antes de llegar a la calle ya habría vendido todo. Y parecía un profeta porque en efecto alguien le compró toda la pesca antes de salir de la arena.

Y yo con ganas de comerme una buena minuta pero sin querer soltar la cámara. Aquí les comparto algunas de las fotos que le hice a Mirringa, el último de su especie. Espero que les gusten, los leo.
