Hello Hivers.

Today I want to talk about old people. Those tired warriors with amazing stories, grumpy and often funny.

In the streets you run into all kinds of characters. Sometimes I meet an old man sitting on a doorway, watching the traffic like it’s a TV show. They tell you things without you even asking. How the neighborhood used to be different, how everything was calmer before, how “young people today don’t understand anything”. And you just listen, because deep down they appreciate that someone gives them a minute.

I’ve also seen epic arguments between them. Fights over a line, a bus seat, or who arrived first. They tell each other things that make you wonder whether to laugh or step in. But five minutes later they’re talking again like nothing happened. That’s how they are: intense and proud.

And of course, there are the stubborn ones. The guy who looks at you badly when you lift the camera, but if you explain calmly he ends up telling you half his life. Or the lady who says she doesn’t want a photo but then asks for another one “just in case”.

Old people carry a weight in their eyes you can’t learn from any book. And even if they sometimes seem harsh or annoying, the truth is many are alone, carrying stories nobody listens to anymore.

That’s why I feel we have the duty to help them, to show them affection whenever we can. A short greeting, a quick conversation, a photo that makes them feel seen. Sometimes that’s enough to brighten their day. And honestly, it also brightens ours.

Hoy quiero hablarles de los ancianos. Esos guerreros cansados, con historias geniales, gruñones y muchas veces graciosos.

En la calle uno se encuentra de todo. A veces me cruzo con un viejito sentado en un portal, mirando el tráfico como si fuera una novela. Te cuentan cosas sin que uno pregunte. Que si antes esto era distinto, que si el barrio era más tranquilo, que si los jóvenes de ahora no entienden nada. Y uno escucha, porque en el fondo ellos agradecen que alguien les preste un minuto.

También he visto discusiones épicas entre ellos. Peleas por una cola, por un asiento en la guagua, por quién llegó primero. Se dicen cada cosa que uno no sabe si reírse o intervenir. Pero cinco minutos después están hablando otra vez como si nada. Son así: intensos y orgullosos.

Y claro, están los resabios. Ese que te mira feo cuando levantas la cámara, pero si le explicas con calma termina contándote media vida. O la señora que al principio dice que no quiere foto, pero al final te pide que le hagas otra por si acaso.

Los ancianos tienen un peso en la mirada que uno no aprende en ningún libro. Y aunque a veces parezcan duros o molestos, la verdad es que muchos están solos, cargando historias que nadie escucha ya.

Por eso siento que tenemos la obligación de ayudarlos, de darles cariño cuando podamos. Un saludo, una conversación corta, una foto que los haga sentirse vistos. A veces eso basta para alegrarles el día. Y de paso, también nos alegra un poco el nuestro.
