Greetings hivers.

Lighting schemes in photography have their origin and names in the way painters used light to construct their works. From there come classic styles such as Rembrandt lighting, inspired by Rembrandt; Caravaggio lighting, based on the strong contrasts of Caravaggio; or Vermeer lighting, softer and more natural, influenced by Johannes Vermeer.

These are schemes commonly used in photography, especially in portraiture, because they allow us to shape the face with intention and narrative.

The photos from the exercise I’m sharing today follow the Rembrandt scheme, using a single almost overhead light placed at an angle that fully illuminates one side of the face while leaving the other in shadow, revealing that characteristic triangle of light under the eye created by the shadow of the nose.

In low key, shadows enhance the dramatic character of the portrait and the result is truly powerful. In this case, I pushed the shadows to the extreme; usually they are softened with a fill or bounced light, but I prefer to take the drama almost to its limit.

In the end, it all comes down to how we choose to sculpt light: how much to reveal, how much to hide, and what emotion we want to leave suspended in the image.

Los esquemas de iluminación en fotografía tienen su origen y nombre en la forma en que los pintores utilizaban la luz para construir sus obras. De ahí nacen estilos clásicos como la iluminación Rembrandt, inspirada en Rembrandt; la iluminación Caravaggio, basada en los fuertes contrastes de Caravaggio; o la iluminación Vermeer, más suave y natural, influenciada por Johannes Vermeer.

Son esquemas que se usan habitualmente en fotografía, sobre todo en retratos, porque permiten moldear el rostro con intención y narrativa.

Las fotos del ejercicio que les comparto hoy son del esquema Rembrandt, trabajado con una sola luz casi cenital, colocada en un ángulo donde ilumine totalmente una parte del rostro y deje en penumbras la otra, revelando ese triángulo de luz característico que se forma bajo el ojo, creado por la sombra de la nariz.

En clave baja, las penumbras resaltan el carácter dramático del retrato y el resultado es realmente potente. En este caso llevé las sombras al extremo; habitualmente se suaviza más con una luz de relleno o rebotada, pero a mí me interesa empujar el drama casi hasta el límite.

Al final, todo se resume en cómo decidimos esculpir la luz: cuánto mostrar, cuánto ocultar y qué emoción queremos dejar suspendida en la imagen.
