Living Among the Ruins of the Habana Libre Sugar Mill / #monomad challenge / [ING/ESP]

During my work at the Habana Libre Sugar Mill, there was something that really caught my attention: how, little by little, some people who had moved to the town began occupying the ruins of the sugar mill to build their homes.
Cuba’s housing problem is nothing new. For decades, there has been a housing shortage that has created a complicated situation in which entire families end up living in places that were not intended for housing and that, in some cases, can even be dangerous.
Each of the improvised homes shown in the photos occupies spaces that, according to former workers of the sugar mill, were once the foundations of machinery, tanks used for processing molasses, and even former offices.
These people have gradually occupied these spaces, and over time it has become increasingly common to see these improvised homes continue to grow among the ruins of what was once the Habana Libre Sugar Mill.

Durante mi trabajo en el Central Habana Libre, hubo algo que me llamó mucho la atención: cómo, poco a poco, algunos pobladores que habÃan inmigrado al pueblo fueron ocupando las ruinas del central para construir sus viviendas.
El problema habitacional de Cuba no es nuevo. Durante décadas ha existido un déficit de viviendas que ha generado una situación complicada, en la que familias enteras terminan habitando lugares que no fueron destinados para ello y que, en algunos casos, incluso pueden resultar peligrosos.
Cada una de las casas improvisadas que se muestran en las fotos ocupa espacios que, según nos explicaban antiguos trabajadores del central, alguna vez fueron los cimientos de maquinarias, tanques utilizados para el procesamiento de melaza e incluso antiguas oficinas.
Estas personas han ido ocupando poco a poco estos espacios y, con el paso del tiempo, se hace cada vez más frecuente ver cómo estas viviendas improvisadas continúan creciendo entre las ruinas de lo que alguna vez fue el Central Habana Libre.
