A very well-known photographer once said: “If your pictures aren’t good enough, you’re not close enough.”

Recently, I found out that my good friend @muhammadhalim spent a week with some of the best documentary photographers from Cuba and around the world as part of the Whitnes grant. Since then, I haven’t stopped asking him all kinds of questions. But one thing he told me really caught my attention.

During one of the sessions, someone very experienced said publicly —and he passed it on to me—:
“No one should use a telephoto lens.”

Although it may sound like a technical suggestion, it has a deeply human meaning.
When you use a wide-angle lens, you’re forced to get close to the scene you want to capture. You often become so immersed in what’s happening that your presence becomes part of the moment, and that changes the photograph completely.

You stop being just an observer and become a participant —a subject within your own work. You even have to compose while being aware of your own presence inside the frame.

Today, I’m sharing a small series in which I tried to emulate that immersive kind of photography. I hope you enjoy it and let me know what you think.

Un fotógrafo muy conocido dijo una vez: “Si tus fotos no son lo suficientemente buenas, es que no estás lo suficientemente cerca.”

Hace poco me enteré de que un buen amigo, @muhammadhalim, pasó una semana junto a algunos de los mejores fotógrafos documentalistas de Cuba y del mundo, como parte de la beca Whitnes. Desde entonces, no he parado de hacerle preguntas de todo tipo. Pero algo que me contó me llamó especialmente la atención.

Durante una de las charlas, alguien con mucha experiencia en el tema dijo en público, y él me lo transmitió:
“Que nadie saque un teleobjetivo.”

Aunque pueda parecer un consejo puramente técnico, tiene un trasfondo profundamente humano.
Cuando usas un lente angular, estás obligado a acercarte a la escena que quieres fotografiar. Muchas veces terminas tan inmerso en lo que ocurre que tu presencia se vuelve inevitable, y eso transforma por completo la fotografía.

Dejas de ser un simple observador para convertirte en participante, en parte del momento. Tus imágenes ya no son solo testimonio, también son experiencia. Incluso debes componer pensando en ti mismo dentro del fotograma.

Hoy les comparto una pequeña serie en la que he tratado de emular ese tipo de fotografía inmersiva. Espero que les guste y me digan qué les parece.
