Distance Matters Too / #monomad challenge / [ING/ESP]

Some photography enthusiasts argue that street photography should always be done with an immersive focal length, a wide-angle lens that forces you to get closer, step into what is happening and become part of the action.
But from my experience, I would say that one of the most discreet ways to steal a portrait is actually by using a long lens.
I think this kind of lens allows you to capture truly spontaneous portraits. When you approach someone with a camera, their attitude often changes immediately, and the photograph is lost right there. With a longer focal length, you can keep some distance and let the person continue being themselves.
That is why I enjoy both short and long focal lengths. Each one has its own way of telling the story of the street.
In this case, the lens helps a lot. A classic like the Nikkor 180mm f/2.8 produces wonderful portraits, with a soft focus and creamy, silky bokeh. With a lens like this, it is hard to take a bad portrait.

Algunos conocedores de la fotografía defienden que la fotografía callejera debe hacerse sí o sí con una focal inmersiva, un lente angular que te obligue a acercarte, a meterte en lo que sucede y ser parte de la acción.
Pero yo voy a decir algo por experiencia: una de las formas más discretas de robar un retrato es precisamente utilizando una lente de largo alcance.
Creo que con este tipo de óptica puedes capturar verdaderos retratos espontáneos. Cuando te acercas a una persona con una cámara, muchas veces su actitud cambia de inmediato y la foto se pierde en ese mismo instante. Con una focal larga puedes mantener cierta distancia y dejar que la persona siga siendo ella misma.
Por eso disfruto tanto las focales cortas como las largas. Cada una tiene su manera de contar la calle.
En este caso, el lente ayuda muchísimo. Un clásico como el Nikkor 180mm f/2.8 hace unos retratos maravillosos, con un enfoque suave y un bokeh cremoso como la seda. Con un lente así, es difícil que un retrato quede mal.

I know absolutely nothing about camera lenses and I’d really love to learn, but what I do know is that I completely agree that taking the photo from a distance makes the scenes feel real and spontaneous; people behave naturally and their demeanour is genuine. When you get closer, their demeanour changes, as you mentioned, because people strike a pose for the photo, it’s instinctive, not a conscious choice, but that’s how it happens.
Your photographs are wonderful; they capture life as it unfolds on the streets at a given moment. Thank you so much for your knowledge, your experience and your work. A big hug!🤗
