A few days ago I made a post about the reasons why so many old cars still circulate in Cuba. Today I want to delve a little deeper into how they manage to keep these vehicles running.

The truth is that there is no strict rule for this, except that you have to be very resourceful and creative. Usually, solid parts are repaired with the help of skilled turners who replicate the parts from the broken originals. Some have repeated this process so many times that they have developed incredible skill.

A few years ago, the government authorized the importation of spare parts for various types of cars. Although they are not modern vehicle parts, in many cases they are newer than those of the 1950's models. As a result, there are true automotive "Frankensteins", where parts from different cars have been creatively adapted so that everything works together.

Even so, it is very common for these cars to break down. Therefore, the drivers also have to be a bit mechanical and innovative, solving problems on the fly when possible in order to make it home.

With this little series I want to pay tribute to these brave creatives who, with their ingenuity, still keep these old gems running. I hope you like it! I read them.

Hace unos días hice un post sobre las razones por las que en Cuba aún circulan tantos autos antiguos. Hoy quiero profundizar un poco en cómo logran mantener estos vehículos en funcionamiento.

La verdad es que no hay una regla estricta para ello, salvo que hay que ser muy ingenioso y creativo. Habitualmente, las piezas sólidas se reparan con la ayuda de torneros hábiles que replican las partes a partir de las originales averiadas. Algunos han repetido este proceso tantas veces que han desarrollado una destreza increíble.

Desde hace unos años, el gobierno autorizó la importación de repuestos para varios tipos de autos. Aunque no son piezas de vehículos modernos, en muchos casos resultan más nuevas que las de los modelos de los años 50. Como resultado, existen verdaderos "Frankenstein" automotrices, donde piezas de distintos autos han sido adaptadas de manera creativa para que todo funcione en conjunto.

Aun así, es muy común que estos autos se averíen. Por ello, los chóferes también deben ser un poco mecánicos e innovadores, resolviendo los problemas sobre la marcha cuando es posible para poder llegar a casa.

Con esta pequeña serie quiero rendir homenaje a estos valientes creativos que, con su ingenio, aún mantienen estas antiguas joyas en funcionamiento. ¡Espero que les guste! Los leo.
