Snake fruit or Salak (Salacca zalacca) is a type of palm with fruit that is usually eaten.
Apart from being eaten fresh, snakefruit is also commonly made sweets, pickles, canned, or packaged as Snakefruit chips.
Snakefruit is found growing wild in nature in southwest Java and southern Sumatra. Snakefruit is cultivated in Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia, eastward to the Moluccas. Snakefruit has also been introduced to the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Queensland and also Fiji.
in Indonesia people know between 20 to 30 types under species. Some of the famous ones are: Sidimpuan Snakefruit from North Sumatra, condet Snakefruit from Jakarta, pondoh Snakefruit from Yogyakarta Balinese Snakefruit from Bali.
