PHOTO STORY: Rhythm and Fire
The Firedance at Luna Musikalawaig
Performed by Hannah and Jonjon, a couple of firedancers who have taken part in moon rituals and fire ceremonies in Mindanao. In this set, they perform dangerously close to each other — a sight that might seem risky to some, as they dance while wielding fire. Yet, it is both artistic and spiritual, and for me, even chilling. Fire is a powerful element — dangerous, unpredictable, and yet deeply symbolic. It holds meaning as a force of transformation, purification, and passion.
These photos were taken using longer exposure settings to capture the dramatic trails of fire, giving visual weight to their movement and the element they masterfully control. They danced under the full moon during the Luna Musikalawaig Festival, their performance blending ritual, rhythm, and raw energy.
The Luna Musikalawaig Festival is an annual open-air celebration of art, music, and nature, held in a scenic valley shaped by the majestic Kalawaig River in Talakag, Bukidnon. Its 12th edition, Musikalawaig 12, was held on April 11–12 at Ki Bathala Gardens, also in Talakag.
This event has been an eye-opener for me. It welcomed me into a deeper appreciation of the connection between art, spirituality, and nature — a transformative experience that resonates long after the firelight fades.
