A couple of years ago I went to Berlin for Christmas and stayed there through New Year’s Eve and even the first week of January, visiting a friend who had moved there for a few months. I took the chance to stay longer and see places I hadn’t visited before, even though I’ve been to Berlin several times already. One of them was this museum that truly fascinated me — the Gropius Bau — where there was a temporary exhibition I was lucky to visit. The exhibition was called “General Idea”, a retrospective dedicated to the Canadian art collective formed by AA Bronson, Felix Partz and Jorge Zontal, active from the late 1960s until the 1990s. It took place at the Gropius Bau in Berlin, from September 22, 2023 to January 14, 2024.Hace un par de años fui a Berlín en Navidad y pasamos allí la noche vieja, incluso la primera semana de enero, con una amiga que se mudó unos meses allí en Berlín y aproveché para poder quedarme un buen tiempo largo y poder visitar cosas que todavía no había visitado antes, porque en Berlín he estado varias veces ya. Como por ejemplo este museo que me fascinó, que se llama Gropius Bau, y en el que había una exposición temporal que tuve el privilegio de poder visitar. La exposición se llamaba “General Idea”, una retrospectiva dedicada al colectivo artístico canadiense formado por AA Bronson, Felix Partz y Jorge Zontal, activo desde finales de los años sesenta hasta los noventa. Tuvo lugar en el Gropius Bau de Berlín, desde el 22 de septiembre de 2023 hasta el 14 de enero de 2024.

At first glance, it looks like a frozen sea made of white panels, symbolizing the melting Arctic ice. On this surface rest small white baby seals, almost invisible, evoking innocence and fragility, but also disappearance. The work was created when two of the artists had been diagnosed with HIV. It can be read as an ironic self-portrait of three men adrift in a time of uncertainty. It also reflects on the contrast between the great public empathy for endangered seals —defended by figures like Brigitte Bardot— and the lack of compassion shown to people suffering from AIDS at that time.La obra fue creada cuando dos de los artistas fueron diagnosticados con VIH y puede leerse como un autorretrato irónico de tres hombres a la deriva en un momento de incertidumbre. Right at the entrance of this exhibition, what first caught my attention were these two photos of a blond young man drinking a glass of milk, with what looks like a white milk moustache, very similar to the one Hitler used to have. The sign below reads “Wear a Moustache.” When we think of fascism, what do we imagine? A reflection on what fascism represents to us.Nada más entrar en esta exposición, lo primero que ví que me llamó la atención son estas dos fotos de este joven rubio que se muestra bebiendo un vaso de leche y al que parece que se le ha hecho un bigote blanco con la leche, muy parecido al que llevaba Hitler. En el cartel podemos leer que dice Lleva un bigote. Cuando pensamos en el fascismo, ¿qué nos imaginamos? Una reflexión sobre lo que para nosotros representa el fascismo.

The next two I chose also caught my attention and carry a lot of meaning. The first shows the trio themselves —AA Bronson, Felix Partz and Jorge Zontal— in one of their most well-known self-portraits, photographed against a background with the word “AIDS.” It’s an ironic reinterpretation of pop art and advertising, while at the same time a reflection on the AIDS crisis. The word “AIDS” adopts the visual style of Robert Indiana’s “LOVE” logo, transforming a word associated with fear into a colorful and ever-present graphic icon.Las siguientes dos que he elegido me gustaron mucho también, y cargan con muchísimo significado: La primera muestra al propio trío en un autoretrato, AA Bronson, Felix Partz y Jorge Zontal, en una de sus fotografías más conocidas, tomada sobre un fondo con las letras AIDS. The second work, with the Campbell’s soup cans, is another gesture of appropriation. General Idea takes the image made famous by Andy Warhol and repeats it over the AIDS letters background to show how the virus had also become a media product, consumed by the press and popular culture. Both pieces combine humor and criticism and are part of their “AIDS Project” series (1987–1994), which aimed to make the disease visible, denounce social indifference, and keep the conversation about AIDS alive.La segunda obra, con las latas de sopa Campbell’s, es otro gesto de apropiación. I’d like to share two more photos I took from other exhibitions that were on display at the same time as the “General Idea” one. I don’t have information about these and don’t remember exactly what they were about, but I really liked them, and the photos turned out beautiful.Quiero compartir otras dos fotos más que tomé de otras exposiciones que había en su día, que se podían visitar a la vez que la temporal de la General Idea. This first one seems super interesting and beautiful to me — a woman painted in a bathtub, as if she were taking a bath with her arm hanging over the side.Esta primera me parece súper interesante y bonita. This last piece caught my attention for being quite unique. It consists of several illuminated screens showing different parts of a man’s body tied with a thin thread that presses into his skin, creating folds and marks. I’m not completely sure about its exact meaning, but it gives a strong feeling of tension, vulnerability, and control over the body that I found very striking.Esta última obra me pareció bastante interesante. Está compuesta por varias pantallas iluminadas en las que se muestran diferentes partes del cuerpo de un hombre atado con un hilo que le aprieta, marcándole la piel y formando pliegues de carne. No estoy completamente seguro del significado exacto, pero transmite una sensación de tensión, vulnerabilidad y control sobre el cuerpo que me resultó muy impactante.
