Sri Lanka: Walking Beside Elephants (EN-ES)

Today we didn’t know how wonderful it was going to be, since we had planned something I had never done in my life: visiting an elephant sanctuary. But first, we got up from our hostel, stepped out into the street and looked for a bus to leave Kandy and venture into the jungle of this wonderful island. We passed in front of buildings as wonderful as this white one colonial style. We passed all kinds of constructions, tuk-tuks; from the bus I love taking photos of people walking, of the buses opposite, of the vegetation we pass, of the road, of the little houses set up alongside the road, that endless tangle of cables, tuk-tuks, motorcycles, cars; I love the hustle and bustle and life of Sri Lanka.

En el día de hoy no sabíamos lo maravilloso que iba a ser, ya que teníamos preparado algo que no había hecho nunca en mi vida: visitar un santuario de elefantes. Pero antes, nos levantamos de nuestro hostal, salimos a la calle y buscamos un autobús para salir de Kandy y adentrarnos en la selva de esta maravillosa isla. Pasamos delante de edificios tan maravillosos como este blanco de estilo colonial. Pasamos por delante de todo tipo de construcciones, tuk-tuks, desde el autobús me encanta hacer fotos a la gente andando, a los autobuses de enfrente, a la vegetación que vamos pasando, a la carretera, a las casitas que se instalan a los lados de la carretera, esa maraña infinita de cables, tuk-tuks, motos, coches; me encanta el ajetreo y la vida de Sri Lanka.

When we arrived at the area where they take care of the elephants, we had a small moral dilemma. In this part of Sri Lanka there are two well-known places where elephants are kept: the famous Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, which has a very large number of elephants, and another, much smaller one. Pinnawala is the place everyone talks about, but we didn’t feel convinced at all. The way the elephants were treated didn’t give us a good feeling, and we had read that many of the elephants there spend a lot of time chained or forced into interactions with tourists. So we decided not to go there.

Instead, we went to the smaller place: the Millennium Elephant Foundation, which focuses on caring for rescued elephants and tries to offer a more responsible approach. They had far fewer elephants, but they were free to move around, better treated, and the whole atmosphere felt much calmer and more respectful. They bathe them every day, and we were able to get into the river and bathe them too. We scrubbed their skin with coconut shells —their skin is incredibly tough— and we even got to feed them. It was an unforgettable experience.

Honestly, it was one of the best experiences of my life. These animals are so majestic and so powerful that being close to them is intimidating in the best possible way. Knowing that we chose the place where they were treated better made it feel even more special.

Cuando llegamos al área donde cuidan a los elefantes, tuvimos un pequeño dilema moral. En esta zona de Sri Lanka hay dos lugares muy conocidos donde tienen elefantes: el famoso Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, donde tienen una gran cantidad de ellos, y otro mucho más pequeño. Pinnawala es el sitio del que todo el mundo habla, pero no nos convenció nada. No nos dio buena sensación el trato que tenían, y habíamos leído que muchos de los elefantes pasan bastante tiempo encadenados o forzados a interactuar con turistas. Así que decidimos no ir allí.

En su lugar, fuimos al sitio más pequeño: la Millennium Elephant Foundation, que se centra en cuidar elefantes rescatados y en ofrecer un enfoque más responsable. Tenían muchos menos elefantes, pero estaban libres para moverse, mejor tratados, y el ambiente era mucho más tranquilo y respetuoso. Les daban un baño cada día, y nosotros pudimos meternos en el río y bañarlos también. Les rascamos la piel con cáscaras de coco —la tienen increíblemente dura— y también pudimos darles de comer. Fue una experiencia increíble.

La verdad, fue una de las mejores experiencias de mi vida. Estos animales son tan majestuosos y tan poderosos que imponen muchísimo cuando estás cerca de ellos. Y saber que escogimos el lugar donde estaban mejor tratados lo hizo todavía más especial.

Later on, when we finished, before getting back on the road, we sat down to eat in a place with a beautiful terrace overlooking this lake, and suddenly —boom!— we had the amazing opportunity to watch the elephants being bathed.

Más tarde, cuando terminamos, antes de volver a la carretera, nos sentamos en un sitio a comer, con una terraza preciosa y con vistas a este lago, y de repente ¡boom! Tuvimos la oportunidad maravillosa de poder ver cómo bañaban a los elefantes.

I’m taking advantage of this post, since I’m sharing my day with the elephants, to talk about how important responsible tourism is when you travel. Please, if you travel, never agree to ride elephants, let monkeys tied with chains climb onto your shoulder for photos… don’t accept any of these things with animals, because for a wild animal to do any of this, there is usually daily abuse behind it to make them submissive and able to perform for tourists.
Please be responsible and never accept this kind of atrocity when you travel, for the sake of the animals.

Aprovecho este post, ya que estoy publicando mi día con los elefantes, para hablar de la importancia del turismo responsable cuando viajas. Por favor, si viajas, no aceptes nunca montarte en elefantes, monos atados que se te suban al hombro para hacerte fotos… no aceptes nada de estas cosas con los animales, porque probablemente, para que un animal salvaje haga estas cosas, detrás hay una serie de maltratos diarios para conseguir que estos animales sean sumisos y puedan hacer lo que hacen con los turistas. Por favor, sed responsables y nunca aceptéis este tipo de atrocidades cuando viajáis, por los animales.

Let’s always choose the kind of tourism that protects life, not the one that destroys it. Every small choice matters —for the animals, for the local communities, and for the future of these beautiful places.
