| On one of my visits to London, I went to spend the day at Tate Britain. I really loved it, and it surprised me that I hadn’t been before, even though I lived there in London for nine years. But well, better late than never, and from now on, every time I visit London, I will make it a must to visit Tate Britain to see what exhibitions are on. I loved it because it’s a mix of classical art, modern art, contemporary, abstract — a bit of everything — experimental; it has everything, and on top of that, the building itself is beautiful. | Since then, it has become one of my favourite art museums in London. I was deeply impressed by its neoclassical façade, so I decided to research a bit about its history. The building was completed in 1897 and designed by the architect Sidney R. J. Smith. The large columns and the triangular pediment are inspired by Greek temples, a style chosen to reflect the importance and dignity of art. Over time, the museum has grown and expanded, but this main entrance has remained practically the same, preserving all its original elegance. I love how the white colour of the stone contrasts with London’s typical cloudy sky, and how the words “FREE FOR ALL” on the signs perfectly summarise what Tate Britain represents: a place where art belongs to everyone. Although most museums in London are free, which is something I love about this city. | All the spaces are quite large, but these main corridors, full of light and with such high ceilings, really impressed me. They are also areas where they take advantage of the space to exhibit artworks, sculptures, or larger experimental pieces that coexist perfectly with the decorative architectural elements, such as these beautiful columns. | What do you think of this beautiful spiral staircase, crowned by a magnificent dome that could easily belong to a cathedral? Honestly, I was left speechless. It’s wonderful to be able to go up and down such a beautiful staircase. They are one of the most iconic parts of Tate Britain, designed during the 2013 renovation by the architecture studio Caruso St John. They combine classical elegance with modern geometry. The white marble steps contrast with the black railings and the natural light entering through the glass dome. It’s a perfect dialogue between history and contemporary design. | ¿Qué me decís de esta bellísima escalera en espiral, coronada por una cúpula magnífica que perfectamente podría pertenecer a una catedral? | In these four photographs, I wanted to capture a bit of the sense of depth created by this corridor that connected all the more classical exhibition rooms, filled with beautiful sculptures and paintings by very famous artists. I took several photos moving forward in that direction to try to convey the perspective I felt while walking through it. | Right in the centre of the museum’s main hall, beneath the great dome, there was a huge sculpture of a human figure. It had very bright colours, a mix of materials, and it almost seemed to move, as if it were coming to life. It was surrounded by colourful panels that gave even more strength to the space. I loved how it contrasted with the classical columns and the old architecture of the museum. | The exhibition that was on at the museum when I visited was called The 80s: Photographing Britain. It was about what life was like in the United Kingdom during the 1980s, mostly reflected through photography. I liked it because it showed a lot of real life — ordinary people, the streets, strikes, fashion, and how people lived during that very different time. Some photos were in black and white, others in colour, and all of them conveyed a lot. I found it very interesting because, although I didn’t live through that period, you could feel how tough but also how creative it all was. | La exposición que estaba en el museo cuando fui se llamaba The 80s: Photographing Britain.
