The Bat Cave, Canasí, Cuba/La cueva del Murciélago, Canasí, Cuba (ENG/ESP)

Greetings, friends and members of the community. In this session, I would like to share with you some photographs of one of the most striking natural formations among the landscape features that characterize the coastal elevations of northern Havana-Matanzas: the caves.

Saludos amigos y miembros de la comunidad. En esta sesión quiero compartirles algunas fotografías de una de las formaciones naturales más llamativas del conjunto de elementos del paisaje que caracterizan a las elevaciones costeras del norte de La Habana-Matanzas: las cuevas.

The heights of northern Havana-Matanzas are a chain of elevations stretching over 100 km from west to east along the northern coastal strip, consisting of limestone rocks originally formed under the sea in the distant geological past. After emerging due to past variations in sea level and vertical movements of the terrain, these rocks were shaped into blocks of land that today form the elevations of this coastal landscape.

Las alturas del norte de Habana-Matanzas son una cadena de elevaciones que se extiende por espacio de más de 100 km de oeste a este en la franja norte costera, constituidas por rocas calizas formadas originalmente bajo el mar en un remoto pasado geológico. Éstas rocas luego de su emersión a causa de variaciones pretéritas del nivel del mar y de los movimientos verticales del terreno, quedaron elaboradas en bloques de terreno que hoy forman las elevaciones de éste paisaje costero.

As a result of the interaction between exogenous landscape-shaping elements, these rocks have been subjected to chemical dissolution by rainwater and groundwater, which has gradually led to the formation of several caves representing the ancient underground conduits that once carried groundwater to coastal springs.

Como consecuencia de la interacción entre los elementos exógenos de modelado del paisaje, éstas rocas han sido sometidas a la acción de la disolución química por las aguas de lluvia y las aguas subterráneas, las cuales gradualmente han conducido a la formación de varias cuevas que representa los antiguos conductos subterráneos que conducían el agua subterránea hacia manantiales litorales en el pasado.

In these photographs, I show you one of the caves in this region, known as the Bat Cave. Its name derives from the large abundance of bats that inhabit the depths of its interior chambers, and it is characterized by a relatively high ceiling, with lateral lobes and some stalactites and stalagmites on the floor. It is located on the escarpment or cliff of one of the coastal sections immediately adjacent to the low plain north of Canasí, where dense rock fracture systems abound due to uplift of the terrain.

En éstas fotografías les muestro una de las cuevas de ésta región, conocida como la Cueva del Murciélago. Su nombre deriva de la gran abundancia de murciélagos que habitan en las profundidades de sus cámaras interiores, y se caracteriza por poseer un puntal relativamente alto, con lóbulos laterales y algunas estalactitas y estalagmitas en el suelo. Se halla en la escarpa o acantilado de una de las secciones costeras inmediatas a la llanura baja al norte de Canasí, y en ellas abundan densos sistemas de fracturas de las rocas a causa de los levantamientos del terreno.

For nature lovers and those of us who study its elements and characteristics in order to understand the landscape and manage its resources, these formations constitute a natural laboratory for admiring and understanding the dynamics and functioning of the natural systems that we must learn about and protect.

Para los amantes de la naturaleza y los que estudiamos sus elementos y características en función de la comprensión del paisaje y la gestión de sus recursos, éstas formaciones constituyen un laboratorio natural para admirar y comprender la dinámica y funcionamiento de los sistemas naturales a los cuales debemos conocer y proteger.
