Brief introduction / Breve introducción

"San Martino di Castrozza is a small mountain village located in the heart of the Dolomites, in the eastern part of Trentino, Italy. It lies in a green valley surrounded by the Paneveggio-Pale di San Martino Nature Park, right at the foot of the famous Pale di San Martino mountain group. The village is situated at about 1,487 meters above sea level, offering stunning views."

The adventure / La aventura

Before I get into the details of the excursion, I want to clarify something: I tried to sum up the whole trip in a single post, but honestly, I couldn’t. I had so many photos to upload and so much to tell that I didn’t want it to become tedious or boring. So I decided to do it in two parts: the first one, which is this, about the trip and our stay in the town of San Martino, and the second one about the hike up the mountain. I hope you understand.

Antes de entrar de lleno en los detalles de la excursión, quiero aclararles algo: intenté resumir todo el viaje en una sola publicación, pero sinceramente, no pude. Tenía tantas fotos para subir y tantas cosas que contar que no quería que se volviera tedioso o aburrido. Así que decidí hacerlo en dos partes: la primera, que es esta, sobre el viaje y la estancia en el pueblo de San Martino, y la segunda sobre la excursión a la montaña. Espero que me comprendan.

We left really early from Mestre, when it was still cool and the day was just starting. We made a quick stop in Cornuda, just to stretch our legs and grab a quick coffee, and then we continued on our way to San Martino di Castrozza.

Salimos bien temprano desde Mestre, cuando todavía estaba fresco y el día apenas comenzaba. Hicimos una breve parada en Cornuda, solo para estirar las piernas y tomar un café rápido, y seguimos nuestro camino rumbo a San Martino di Castrozza.

When we arrived, the first thing that blew me away was the scenery and the town’s architecture. The houses have that typical alpine style, with sloped roofs and wooden balconies full of flowers. Just look, the buildings seem to be literally at the foot of the mountain, with the forest and clouds in the background. It’s like the houses grow right out of nature itself, and you get that feeling all over town.

Cuando llegamos, lo primero que me impresionó fue el paisaje y la arquitectura del pueblo. Las casas tienen ese estilo alpino tan particular, con techos inclinados y balcones de madera llenos de flores. Miren, los edificios parecen estar literalmente al pie de la montaña, con el bosque y las nubes de fondo. Es como si las casas surgieran de la misma naturaleza, y esa sensación se repite en todo el pueblo.

Walking around San Martino, you notice how picturesque and well-kept everything is. There are hotels and residences with colorful facades and balconies full of flowerpots, like you can see in several photos. Seriously, there are flowers everywhere: on balconies, in parks, even on the sidewalks. In one of the pictures, you can see a wooden bridge decorated with pink flowers right over a stream that runs through the town, which makes it even more cozy and cheerful.

Caminando por San Martino, uno se da cuenta de lo pintoresco y bien cuidado que está todo. Hay hoteles y residencias con fachadas coloridas y balcones llenos de macetas con flores, como se ve en varias fotos. De verdad, las flores están por todas partes: en los balcones, en los parques, hasta en las aceras. En una de las imágenes se ve un puente de madera decorado con flores rosas justo encima de un arroyo que atraviesa el pueblo, lo que le da un aire aún más acogedor y alegre.

The hotel where we stayed, the Garni Suisse, is small but very comfortable and well located. From our window, we could see the mountains and the green fields, and the staff was excellent. Plus, the food they serve is varied and really well prepared. In the photos, you can see how many hotels and restaurants there are, all with that special Dolomite touch.

El hotel donde nos hospedamos, el Garni Suisse, es pequeño pero muy cómodo y bien ubicado. Desde la ventana podíamos ver las montañas y el verde del campo, y la atención del personal fue excelente. Además, la comida que ofrecen es variada y muy bien preparada. En las fotos se puede notar la cantidad de hoteles y restaurantes que hay, todos con ese toque especial de las Dolomitas.

Something else that really caught my attention was the number of tourists in town, which explains the big variety of hotels, guesthouses, shops, cafés, and restaurants. The vibe is lively, but at the same time, you feel a lot of peace. In the pictures, you can see people walking the streets, some with backpacks and hiking poles, ready for mountain adventures.

Algo que me llamó mucho la atención fue la cantidad de turistas que había, lo que explica la gran oferta de hoteles, pensiones, tiendas, cafeterías y restaurantes. El ambiente es animado, pero al mismo tiempo se respira mucha tranquilidad. En las imágenes se ve gente caminando por las calles, algunos con mochilas y bastones, listos para las excursiones a la montaña.

Another thing I can’t leave out is the variety in architecture. There are old buildings, like a stone church with its typical tower, and some more modern ones, but all of them keep that beautiful mountain style. There are even wood sculptures, like the one of a man with a baton, that give the town a traditional and artistic feel.

Otra cosa que no puedo dejar de mencionar es la variedad de la arquitectura. Hay edificios antiguos, como una iglesia de piedra con su torre característica, y otros más modernos, pero todos mantienen ese estilo de montaña tan bonito. Incluso hay esculturas de madera, como la de un hombre con una batuta, que le dan un toque artístico y tradicional al pueblo.

That first day, we ended up exhausted from walking up and down the steep streets, and for those of us not used to the altitude, you really feel the tiredness in a different way. But it was totally worth it for the views and the special atmosphere in San Martino.

Ese primer día terminamos agotados de tanto caminar por las empinadas calles y, para los que no estamos acostumbrados a la altura, se siente el cansancio de otra manera. Pero todo valió la pena por las vistas y el ambiente tan especial que tiene San Martino.
