Un dia para nosotros

A day for us

Hoy desperté un poco decepcionado. El día amaneció nublado y lluvioso, y aunque eso es normal en esta época del año, el mal tiempo iba contra los planes que tenía con mi esposa. Hoy habíamos planeado ir al reparto Vedado a comprar un par de zapatos para ella, y de paso aprovechar el día y dar un pequeño paseo para disfrutar un momento solo nosotros dos ya que la niña estaría en la escuela. Menos mal que mi esposa es más entusiasta que yo, no se dejó intimidar por el clima, y me contagió el optimismo. Además, por suerte escampó, pudimos llevar a la niña a la escuela, y nos fuimos contentos a tener unas horas para nosotros.

Desde donde yo vivo llegar al Vedado no es cosa sencilla, el transporte se ha deteriorado mucho y tuvimos que estar casi una hora en la parada esperando una gacela (taxi) no pasó un solo ómnibus mientras esperábamos.

Today I woke up a little disappointed. The day dawned cloudy and rainy, and although that is normal at this time of the year, the bad weather went against the plans I had with my wife. Today we had planned to go to the Vedado neighborhood to buy a pair of shoes for her, and to take advantage of the day and go for a little walk to enjoy a moment just the two of us since the girl would be at school. Fortunately my wife is more enthusiastic than me, she was not intimidated by the weather, and she infected me with optimism. Besides, luckily it stopped raining, we were able to take the girl to school, and we were happy to have a few hours to ourselves.

From where I live, getting to Vedado is not easy, transportation has deteriorated a lot and we had to spend almost an hour at the bus stop waiting for a gazelle (cab) not a single bus passed by while we were waiting.

El viaje fue bastante rápido y llegamos en poco tiempo. Nos bajamos en el parque Quijote, en la calle 23 y J. Aquí hay una pequeña feria donde venden diferentes artículos y artesanías. Preguntamos por el precio de unos tenis que estaban en venta para evaluar los precios, aunque no era ahí donde planeábamos comprarlos. La mujer que nos atendió nos dijo el precio y nos aseguró que eran originales, aunque no creo que lo fueran a ese precio, bastante caros para el salario de un cubano, pero muy baratos para ser unos Nike originales, la verdad.

The ride was quite fast and we arrived in no time. We got off at Quijote Park, on 23rd and J. There is a small fair here where they sell different items and handicrafts. We asked about the price of some tennis shoes that were for sale to evaluate the prices, although that was not where we were planning to buy them. The woman who attended us told us the price and assured us that they were original, although I did not believe it for that price, quite expensive for the salary of a Cuban, but very cheap to be an original Nike, the truth.

Cómo también estábamos en plan paseo, cruzamos la calle y nos fuimos para Coppelia (¿La Catedral del Helado?), había una cola bien pequeña y entramos bastante rápido. Una sorpresa al sentarnos a la mesa, había helado de chocolate, fresa y vainilla, aunque las ensaladas de cinco bolas, que fue lo que pedimos, vienen con los sabores dirigidos, una bola de chocolate, dos de fresa y dos de vainilla, era lo que tocaba.

As we were also on a walk, we crossed the street and went to Coppelia (The Cathedral of Ice Cream?), there was a very small queue and we entered quite quickly. A surprise when we sat down at the table, there was chocolate, strawberry and vanilla ice cream, although the five scoop salads, which was what we ordered, come with the flavors directed, one scoop of chocolate, two of strawberry and two of vanilla, that's how they served it.

Salimos de Coppelia sintiendo mucho más frío que cuando entramos y continuamos nuestro recorrido hacia el lugar donde mi esposa compraría sus tenis. Caminamos por la calle L y pasamos frente a la Universidad de La Habana. Subimos la escalinata hasta el Alma Mater y me tomé una foto de recuerdo junto a esta hermosa escultura de mujer. La vista desde la Colina Universitaria es impresionante desde esta altura, en la calle frente a la escalinata se detienen muchos automóviles con turistas para tomar fotos.

We left Coppelia feeling much colder than when we entered and continued our walk to the place where my wife would buy her tennis shoes. We walked down L Street and passed in front of the University of Havana. We walked up the steps up to the Alma Mater and I took a souvenir photo next to this beautiful sculpture of woman. The view from the University Hill is breathtaking from this height, on the street in front of the staircase many cars with tourists stop to take pictures.

Finalmente, llegamos a donde nos dirigíamos. Mi esposa estaba indecisa entre comprarse unos tenis negros o unos blancos, que raro. ¡Al final se decidió por los blancos! Ja, pensé que nos llevaría más tiempo.

Finally, we got to where we were headed. My wife was undecided between buying black or white tennis shoes, how weird, she ended up deciding on the white ones! Ha, I thought it would take us longer.

La tarde se sentía bastante fria, así que cuando salimos nos apuramos en regresar porque queríamos recoger a la niña temprano. No nos quedó más remedio que coger un taxi para llegar a tiempo porque a medida que cae la tarde se hace más difícil el tema transporte, pero creo que en poco tiempo ni taxi se podrá coger, los taxistas han aumentado el precio del pasaje, al menos en el Vedado están más caros ahora.

Sin embargo, un día es un día, y nosotros tampoco salimos mucho de casa. A pesar del frío y el día nublado nos sentimos a gusto y logramos lo que nos habíamos planificado. Pienso que de vez en cuando tenemos que tomarnos un tiempo y hacer estas salidas, ya que al final lo más importante es crear bonitos recuerdos como el de este día.

The afternoon felt quite cold, so when we left we hurried back because we wanted to pick up the girl early. We had no choice but to take a cab to get there in time because as the afternoon falls, transportation becomes more difficult, but I think that soon we won't even be able to take a cab, the cab drivers have increased the price of the fare, at least in Vedado they are more expensive now.

However, a day is a day, and we did not leave the house much either. Despite the cold and the cloudy day we felt at ease and accomplished what we had planned. I think that from time to time we need to take some time and make these outings, because in the end the most important thing is to create beautiful memories like this day.
