Street musicians from Germany (EN / ES)

My entry to #monomad Challenge

There are many things that really caught my attention during my brief European adventure last summer, but without a doubt, one of them was the street musicians.

For someone who has lived most of their life in a city, and in a time where it's not common to see musicians playing on a sidewalk or street corner to earn a few coins, this is something you notice at first glance. Here in my city, you also see artistic expressions in the streets, but they take a different form. For example, on Sundays, there are "retretas" (retreats) in the park in the heart of the city, but that's a topic for another day.

What I like about these spontaneous art expressions is the air of joy they bring to cities, even if the artists do it to make a living. When I pass by a street musician, I'm captivated by the atmosphere it creates, and I find myself smiling, realizing that the day has changed for me. That's when you realize this art form brightens your life, and as a token of gratitude, you leave them a coin, which is always rewarded with a sincere smile.

Although I'm not a music expert, I dare say that the quality of the musicians is very high, in most cases, and they have to constantly improve themselves in order to survive and put food on the table; only meritocracy counts. I'm convinced that many of them dream of one day finding that long-awaited opportunity that will allow them to express their art to the masses and change their standard of living.

This phenomenon isn't isolated to Germany; I saw it in numerous cities, such as Berlin, Potsdam, Wardemünde, Leipzig, Magdeburg, and everywhere else I went. I found both women and men, young and old, in a subway station or any other corner of the city, of every nationality imaginable, but always with something in common, bringing joy to each other's lives.

Hay muchísimas cosas que me llamaron mucho la atención sobre mi poco extensa aventura europea del pasado verano, pero sin lugar a dudas, una de ellas fueron los músicos callejeros.

Para alguien que ha vivido la mayor parte de su vida en una ciudad y en un tiempo donde no es común ver a los músicos tocando en una acera o una esquina para ganarse unas moneas, esto es algo que notas a primera vista. Aquí en mi ciudad también se ven expresiones de arte en las calles, pero tienen otra forma. Por ejemplo, los domingos se realizan retretas en el parque del corazón de la ciudad, pero ese es tema para otro día.

Lo que me gusta de esas expresiones de arte espontáneas, es el aire de alegría que le dan a las ciudades, más allá de que los artistas lo hagan para buscarse el sustento. Cuando paso cerca de un músico callejero, quedo atrapado por esa atmósfera que se crea y me sorprendo a mi mismo sonriendo y me doy cuenta que el día ha cambiado para mi. Ahí es donde te das cuenta que esta forma de arte te alegra la vida y como muestra de agradecimiento les dejas alguna moneda, que siempre es recompensada con un sincera sonrisa.

Aunque no soy un experto en música, me atrevo a asegurar que la calidad de los músicos es muy buena, en la mayoría de los casos, y es que ahí tienen que superarte constantemente para poder sobrevivir y poder llevar los alimentos a la mesa, solo vale la meritocracia. Estoy convencido de que muchos de ellos sueñan con que algún día aparezca esa ansiada oportunidad que les permita expresar su arte a multitudes y cambiar su nivel de vida.

Este fenómeno no es un hecho aislado en Alemania, pude verlo en numerosas ciudades como Berlín, Postdam, Wardemünde, Leipzig, Magdeburg y en cuanto sitio estuve. Encontré tanto mujeres como hombres, jóvenes o personas mayores, en una estación de metro o en cualquier otro rincón de la ciudad, de cualquier nacionalidad imaginable, pero siempre con algo en común, alegrándonos la vida.
