Echoes of Euro 2024. Spain Fan Zone

Have you ever been to a national football team's Fan Zone before the start of a major event? That's what this post is about: my experiences in Spain's Fan Zone on the day of the Euro 2024 final against England.

The atmosphere I found there is hard to describe. The first thing I have to say is that I had never been to a party like that before. As I tell you, it’s a real celebration. What happens is that in my country, although there is a lot of passion for football, especially for European football and in particular La Liga, we don’t have a strong domestic league, much less a top-level national team. Imagine being in a place with Spanish fans just hours before facing England — a real madness!!

I saw people with signs trying to get tickets. It’s incredible, they made the trip to Berlin without having a guaranteed ticket!! That really shows the love for a national team. I also saw other very cheerful banners, like the one in the photo from a Cucurella fan.

There I didn’t see anyone arguing about who is the best player or who will win La Liga, everyone was from Spain, showing it with flags or national team jerseys, singing and enjoying a soft drink or a beer to counter the strong heat, with smiles from ear to ear.

Close to noon, the march through the streets of Berlin towards the Olympic Stadium began. I estimate the distance between the two places to be 3 to 4 kilometers, although it felt longer, maybe because I couldn’t stop feeling emotions from the chants of national identity or rivalry against the opponent. Along the way, I kept seeing colorful characters. Many were looking for a spot above ground level to take photos and videos of the crowd. There I saw one of those characters filming with two phones at once — crazy!!

Inside the crowd, I saw people in light vehicles selling drinks that fans bought to refresh and hydrate themselves. Others carried banners directed at the rival team, showing the existing rivalry. What can I say about the photographers? We had a great day with so many opportunities to get different photos. I can’t forget to mention the kids. I saw children of all ages, some accompanied by their parents, but I also saw some walking alone in the march, very identified with their national team.

Around 12:30, I arrived at the outer areas of Berlin’s Olympic Stadium, the venue for the final. There, fans from both teams came together and, contrary to what I imagined, the atmosphere was fantastic. The rivalry was shown through chants, but always in a healthy and respectful environment. I didn’t see any fights or anything like that; on the contrary, fans hugged and took photos together.

There were still several hours before the match started. Those with tickets headed inside the stadium, others who were not so lucky went to where the giant screens were placed, some to bars and other venues to watch the game on TV, and others, like me, went to the train station to start the journey home and watch it there with family — but of course, with my camera weighing a few extra kilos from all the photos I took 🤠. That July 14, 2024, will remain forever in my memory!!

¿Has estado alguna vez en la Fan Zone de una selección nacional de fútbol, antes del inicio de un evento de primer nivel? De eso trata esta publicación, mis experiencias en la Fan Zone de España el día de la final de la Euro 2024 contra Inglaterra.

El ambiente que encontré no se ni como voy a describirlo. Lo primero que tengo que decir es que nunca había estado en una fiesta así. Como se los digo, es una verdader fiesta. Lo que pasa es que en mi país, aunque hay mucha afición por el fútbol, sobre todo se sigue mucho el fútbol europeo y en particular a La Liga española, pero no contamos con una liga propia fuerte y mucho menos con una selección de primer nivel. Imagínate estar un lugar con aficionados de España a pocas horas de enfrentar a Inglaterra, una verdadera locura!!

Vi personas con carteles tratando de obtener entradas. Es increible, hicieron el viaje hasta Berlín sin tener una entrada asegurada!! Eso es algo que demuestra el amor a una selección. También vi otras pancartas muy alegres, como la de la foto de un seguidor de Cucurella.

Allí no vi a nadie discutiendo sobre quien es mejor jugador, ni quién ganará La Liga, todos eran de España, demostrándolo con banderas o con camisetas de la selección, cantando y disfrutando de un refresco o una cerveza para contrarrestar el fuerte calor, con una sonrisa de oreja a oreja.

Ya muy cerca del mediodía comenzó la marcha por las calles de Berlín rumbo al Estadio Olímpico. Estimo que la distancia entre ambos sitios debe ser de 3 a 4 kilómetros, aunque me parecieron más, tal vez porque no paraba de sentir emociones por los cánticos de identidad nacional o de rivalidad hacia el oponente. Durante ese trayecto no paraba de ver situaciones personajes pintorescos. Muchos buscaban un lugar por encima del nivel del suelo para poder hacer fotos y videos de la multitud, Allí vi a uno de esos personajes haciendo videos con dos móviles a la vez, que loco!!

Dentro de la multitud vi personas en vehículos ligeros vendiendo bebidas que los aficionados compraban para refrescar e hidratarse. También otros portando pancartas dirigidas a los rivales de turno con muestras de la rivalidad existente. Que decir de los fotógrafos? hicimos el día con tantas oportunidades de obtener una fotografía diferente. No podía dejar de mencionar a los niños. Los vi de todas las edades, unos en compañía de sus padres, pero vi a alguno caminando solo en la marcha, muy identificado con su selección.

Alrededor de las 12:30 llegué a las áreas exteriores del Estadio Olímpico de Berlin, sede de la final. Allí se unieron los aficionados de ambas selecciones y muy contrario de lo que imaginé, el encuentro fue fantástico. La rivalidad se demostraba con cánticos, pero siempre en un ambiente sano y de respeto. No vi ninguna riña ni nada parecido, todo lo contrario, los fans se abrazaban y se hacían fotos juntos.

Todavía faltaban varias horas para el inicio del partido. Los que tenían entrada se dirigieron hacia el interior del estadio, otros que no tuvieron esa suerte se dirigieron hacia donde estaban colocadas las pantallas gigantes, otros a bares y otros locales para ver el partido por la TV y otros, como yo, hacia la parada de tren para iniciar el regreso a casa y verlo allí en compañía de la familia, pero eso si, con la cámara pesando unos kilogramos de más por tantas fotos que hice 🤠. Ese 14 de julio de 2024 quedará para siempre en mi memoria!!
