I find myself in a magical place, a corner of Cuban history that few have the privilege of knowing. I am in La Güira, at Hacienda Cortina, in Pinar del Río, Cuba. But how did I get here and what secrets does this place hold? Join me on this journey, I promise it will be an unforgettable adventure.

Abro los ojos. El sol de la mañana se cuela por las cortinas de las ventanillas del ómnibus, acariciando mi rostro con su calor. Me encuentro en un lugar mágico, un rincón de la historia cubana que pocos tienen el privilegio de conocer. Estoy en La Güira, en la Hacienda Cortina, en Pinar del Río, Cuba. Pero, ¿cómo llegué aquí y qué secretos guarda este lugar? Acompáñame en este viaje, te prometo que será una aventura inolvidable.

Location and history of Hacienda Cortina.

Hacienda Cortina, also known as La Güira, is located in the province of Pinar del Río, in the westernmost part of Cuba. This hidden treasure in the heart of the province became one of the largest land properties in Pinar del Rio, stretching across three municipalities, Consolación del Sur, La Palma, and Los Palacios. Located on the banks of the San Diego River, it includes territories of the Sierra del Rosario and Los Órganos.

Ubicación e historia de la Hacienda Cortina

La Hacienda Cortina, conocida también como La Güira, se encuentra en la provincia de Pinar del Río, en el extremo más occidental de Cuba. Este luga, un tesoro escondido en el corazón de la provincia, se convirtió en una de las mayores propiedades de tierra existentes en Pinar del Rio, extendiéndose por tres municipios, Consolación del Sur, La Palma y los Palacios. Ubicada en las márgenes del Rio San Diego, incluye territorios de la Sierra del Rosario y la los Órganos.

The owner of Hacienda Cortina, from the second decade of the last century until 1959, was José María Cortina y García, a Cuban politician, lawyer, and journalist born in San Diego de Núñez, Pinar del Río, on February 3, 1880. He held various important positions in his extensive political career, including Representative, Senator, Secretary of Government, and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cuba.

There are several versions of how José María Cortina acquired "La Güira," his first property in the area, with an area of about 133 hectares. Without going into those details, it is enough to add that little by little, he acquired neighboring farms until he turned his property into a large estate with 150 tobacco fields, extensive pastures for horse breeding, cattle and pig farming, and produced coffee, fruits, honey, pine resin, etc.

Existen varias versiones de como Cortina adquirió "La Güira", su primera propiedad en la zona, con una extensión de unas 133 hectáreas. Sin entrar en esos detalles, basta añadir que poco a poco fue adquiriendo fincas aledañas hasta convertir su propiedad en un gran latifundio con 150 vegas de tabaco, extensos potreros para la cría de caballos, ganado vacuno y porcino; producía café, frutas, miel de abejas, resina de pinos, etc.

The project for this estate can be traced back to 1920. By that time, it already had a striking stone entrance, with a medieval appearance, on which he inscribed his surname, which would give it its name to this day: Hacienda Cortina. However, the gardens, walkways, and all the interior constructions show a picturesque mixture of different cultures.

At "La Güira," his first estate in the area, due to its spectacular landscape, he decided to build a park with architectural and sculptural elements that would give the estate the formal characteristics that make it unique when compared to similar properties in Cuba.

El proyecto de esta hacienda se puede ubicar en 1920. Por esa fecha ya tenía de una vistosa portada de piedras, de aspecto medieval, en la que inscribió su apellido con el que dará su nombre hasta nuestros días: Hacienda Cortina, pero realmente, los jardines, paseos, y todas las construcciones interiores muestran una mezcla pintoresca de diferentes culturas.

En “La Güira”, su primera hacienda en esta zona, por su espectacular paisaje, decide construir un parque con elementos arquitectónicos y escultóricos que le otorgarán a la hacienda las características formales que la hacen única al compararlas con propiedades similares en Cuba.

Venturing into the park

As we venture into the park, once we pass the gate, we come across a small stone building, Las Maracas Villa Admission, which is an area designated for the accommodation of tourists who visit the place.

Una vez rebasado el portón, encontramos una pequeña construcción de piedras, la carpeta de la villa Las Maracas, área destinada al alojamiento de los turistas que vistan el lugar.

Admission is connected to the rest of the facilities of this villa by a paved road, guarded on both sides by medieval-style walls, which end in two huge cup-shaped planters.

La carpeta está conectada con el resto de las instalaciones de esta villa por una vía pavimentada, custodiada por ambos lados por sendas murallas de estilo medieval, que finalizan en dos jardineras en forma de enormes copas.

What most caught the attention in Las Maracas Villa is the Red House, a beautiful chalet built with precious woods from the country, supported on pillars that separate it from the ground and with white railings, which imposes its elegant bearing on those who contemplate it. It is a typical house usually built in the estates of the Cuban bourgeoisie in the mid-19th century.

Right in front of the house, there is a small obelisk topped by a street lamp and the first sculpture, made of white marble, of the many that adorn the park throughout.

Lo que más llamó la atención en la Villa Las Maracas es la Casa Roja, un bellísimo chalet construido con maderas preciosas del país, soportada sobre pilares que la separan del suelo y con barandas en blanco, que impone su porte elegante a quienes la contemplan. Es una casa típica generalmente edificada en las haciendas de la burguesía cubana de mediados del siglo XIX.

Justo frente a la casa hay una especie de pequeño obelisco rematado por una farola y la primera escultura, de mármol blanco, de las muchas que adornan al parque por todas partes.

Las Maracas Villa also has 9 rooms, a swimming pool, an amphitheater, a barbecue area, the Las Maracas Restaurant, and a game room. We didn't stop here because we wanted to make the most of the time we had to explore most of the areas of the estate.

La Villa Las Maracas cuenta además con 9 habitaciones, piscina, anfiteatro, parrillada, el Restaurante las Maracas y sala de juegos. Aquí no nos detuvimos pues queríamos aprovechar el tiempo del que disponíamos para recorrer la mayor parte de las áreas de la hacienda.

We continue along the path, partly paved in marble, which leads us through spacious gardens and rows of bronze streetlights, to the main house, also built in 1920 with local stones and materials, and which is now in ruins.

The presence of the San Diego River in this location was utilized for the creation of an artificial lake with a dock and bridges, with the possibility of navigation for small boats. On the shore, there are gazebos, docks, and sitting areas, harmoniously integrated into the vegetation and landscape of the surrounding mountains.

One of the must-see places for those sailing on the lake or traveling along its paths is the Island of Delos, with its bridge connecting both shores and a sculpture of the nymph Egeria, carved in the finest white Carrara marble.

Surrounded by the waters of the artificial lake and the San Diego River are the Japanese Park and the Asian Park, with their respective houses where an important collection of objects, valuable examples of Asian culture, were kept and are now housed in museums.

At the end of our journey, dragging our tiredness, we arrived at the spacious and beautiful La Güira Restaurant. Next to it is a tower made of red bricks that serves as a lookout point.

Some considerations

Walking through Hacienda Cortina, it is impossible not to be impressed by its architectural features. The buildings and structures here are a mixture of architectural styles. The numerous sculptures are of exquisite taste, many of them made of the finest white Carrara marble and other precious materials.

Hacienda Cortina is famous for its outdoor spaces. The gardens are true oases of beauty and tranquility, with a great variety of exotic plants and flowers. Here you can find everything from palms and bamboos to orchids and ferns.

One of the places that impressed me the most was the stone house. Although it is now in ruins, you can appreciate the magnitude and splendor it had in its glory days. Another favorite of mine was the Japanese Garden, with its lily pond and red bridge, a perfect place to meditate and enjoy nature. I was also fascinated by the artificial lake, with its stone bridge and central island, where the statue of the nymph Egeria is located.

For nature lovers, there are numerous recreational activities. You can explore natural trails, have a picnic in the gardens, or even swim in the lake.

And of course, you cannot miss trying Cuban food at the Hacienda's restaurant. Here you can taste delicious local dishes, prepared with fresh and natural ingredients.

La Hacienda Cortina es famosa por sus espacios exteriores. Los jardines son verdaderos oasis de belleza y tranquilidad, con una gran variedad de plantas y flores exóticas. Aquí puedes encontrar desde palmeras y bambúes hasta orquídeas y helechos.

Uno de los lugares que más me impresionó fue la casa de piedra. Aunque hoy se encuentra en ruinas se puee aprecias la magnitud y el esplendor que tuvo en sus momentos de gloria. Otro de mis favoritos fue el Jardín Japonés, con su lago de lirios y su puente rojo, un lugar perfecto para meditar y disfrutar de la naturaleza.También quedé fascinado por el lago artificial, con su puente de piedra y su isla central, donde se encuentra la estatua de la Ninfa Egeria.

Para los amantes de la naturaleza, hay numerosas actividades de recreación. Puedes recorrer los senderos naturales, hacer picnic en los jardines, o incluso nadar en el lago

Y por supuesto, no puedes dejar de probar la comida cubana en el restaurante de la Hacienda. Aquí podrás degustar platos locales deliciosos, preparados con ingredientes frescos y naturales.
