The beginning of an exciting adventure

It was a sunny day, although, at times, some clouds stubbornly tried to block the sun's rays. As soon as I set foot in Nueva Gerona, Cuba, I felt a special energy in the air. I wasn't exactly sure what to expect, but I was sure it would be an unforgettable experience. Are you ready to join me on this tour? I assure you that you won't regret it.

El inicio de una aventura emocionante

Era un día soleado, aunque, a ratos, algunas nubes se empeñaban vanamente en no dejar pasar los rayos del sol. Apenas pisé Nueva Gerona, Cuba, sentí una energía especial en el ambiente. No sabía exactamente qué me esperaba, pero estaba seguro de que sería una experiencia inolvidable. ¿Están listos para unirse a mí en este recorrido? Les aseguro que no se arrepentirán.

The construction and location of the Boulevard

The Boulevard of Nueva Gerona is one of the main arteries of the city and is located in the heart of it. The project is a recreation of different scenes from the history, roots, and traditions of the Isle of Pines, now known as the Isle of Youth.

After Hurricane Gustav, the project was presented and it was decided to bury all hydraulic, sanitary, telephone, and electrical networks of what was then called 39th Street, which was later renamed Paseo José Martí.

El Boulevard de Nueva Gerona es una de las principales arterias de la ciudad y está situado en el corazón de la misma. La obra es una recreación de diferentes estampas de la historia, raíces y tradiciones de la Isla de Pinos, hoy Isla de la Juventud.

Posterior al huracán Gustav, se presentó el proyecto y se decidió soterrar todas las redes hidráulicas, sanitarias, telefónicas y eléctricas de la entonces calle 39, devenida Paseo José Martí.

Its construction began in 2010 and after several years of dedication and intense work, the most beautiful pedestrian walkway in the country, in my humble opinion, was completed. Since then, it has been a space for meeting and enjoyment for locals and visitors alike.

Su construcción comenzó en 2010 y después de varios años de dedicación e intenso trabajo, se concluyó, en mi modesta opinión, el paseo peatonal más bello del país. Desde entonces, ha sido un espacio de encuentro y disfrute para locales y visitantes.

This boulevard stretches for 1 kilometer and features a variety of architectural styles that make this space a unique and charming place. As you walk through its streets, you will be able to observe colonial and modern buildings, as well as beautiful squares and green areas.

Main outdoor spaces of the Boulevard

As we continue our tour, we come across various outdoor spaces where we can enjoy the good weather and the friendliness of the people. The aesthetics and originality of its construction are evident from the very beginning. The combination of marble slabs with bricks and other materials in a myriad of garden shapes, the varied designs and arrangement of benches, the sculptural works, and the fountain fill us with pleasant surprises and invite us to take a break and contemplate so much beauty. A medida que avanzamos en nuestro recorrido, encontramos diversos espacios al aire libre donde podemos disfrutar del buen clima y la amabilidad de la gente. La estética y la originalidad de su construcción salta a la vista desde el primer momento. La combinación de losas de mármol con ladrillos y otros materiales en un sinfin de formas de los jardines, los variados diseños y disposición de los bancos, las obras escultóricas y la fuente nos llenan de agradables sorpresas e invitan a tomar un descanso y contemplar tanta belleza derrochada . Parks

At both ends of the Boulevard, we find three parks that are very popular among the locals for their leisure time or at night. These are the Guerrillero Heroico Park, the Hexagons Park or Music Park (where outdoor events and concerts are held for everyone's enjoyment), and the Camilo Cienfuegos Park or Parrot Park.

En ambos extremos del Boulevard encontramos tres parques muy concurridos por los pobladores en sus ratos de ocio o por las noches. Estos son el Parque Guerrillero Heroico, el Parque de los Éxágonos o Parque de la Música (aquí se realizan eventos y conciertos al aire libre para el disfrute de todos) y el Parque Camilo Cienfuegos o Parque de las Cotorras.

This space also has various companies and businesses that are essential to the local economy. Some of these include travel agencies, banks, hotels, post offices, and even the headquarters of the Municipal Government.

En este espacio también se encuentran diversas empresas y negocios que son fundamentales para la economía local. Algunos de estos son agencias de viaje, bancos, hoteles, oficina de correos y hasta la sede del Gobierno Municipal.

One place that cannot be overlooked because it is one of the most iconic in Nueva Gerona, for its rich history, and for its importance to the locals, is the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows.

Located at the entrance of the Boulevard, it is an authentic colonial-style building. Its history dates back to May 30, 1859, when the masonry walls and tiled roof were first constructed, over a previous structure that consisted of wooden walls and thatched roof. In 1926, it was rebuilt after the original was destroyed by a hurricane. Subsequently, various restoration and maintenance works have kept the church in good condition and have allowed it to continue identifying Nueva Gerona and the Isle of Youth in general.

Un sitio que no puede pasarse por alto por ser uno de los más emlemáticos de Nueva Gerona, por su rica historia y por la importancia que tiene para los pobladores es la Iglesia Nuestra Señora de los Dolores.

Situada a la misma entrada del Boulevard, se trata de una auténtica construcción de estilo colonial. Su historia se remonta al 30 de mayo de 1859, momento en que por primera vez se construyeron las paredes de mampostería y techo de tejas, sobre una estructura anterior que estaba conformada por paredes de tabla y techo de guano. En el año 1926 fue reedificada, tras ser la original destruida por un huracán. Posteriormente, diversas labores de restauración y mantenimiento realizadas, han logrado mantener en buen estado la iglesia, y permitido que continúe identificando a Nueva Gerona y a la Isla de la Juventud en general.

An interesting fact associated with this building is that the parish priest, Guillermo Sardiñas, was the only Cuban priest who joined Fidel Castro in the Sierra Maestra. He did so in 1957, leaving Nueva Gerona for this purpose, and even rose to the rank of commander.

Un dato interesante asociado a esta edificación es que el párroco, Guillermo Sardiñas, fue el único sacerdote cubano que se unió a Fidel Castro en la Sierra Maestra. Lo hizo en 1957, abandonando Nueva Gerona para ello, y llegó a ascender a comandante.
