I want to tell you a little story about how I created my photography studio.

Before 2018 more or less my main source of income consisted of selling my documentary and street photography in a fair in old Havana, in general I was not doing badly, only that it is a business that depended mainly on tourism, visitors from other countries were my main customers, but the drawback was its seasonal instability.

So my entrepreneurial spirit had been on fire for a long time, looking for something else that would give me a parallel alternative and that would work at all times of the year.

With that idea in mind, I decided to create a photography studio with a free space I had in my house and that with some creativity and effort, I could turn it into a good place to do that extra I was looking for and also have my own experimentation space to take pictures and paint.

Quiero contarles una pequeña historia de cómo creé mi estudio de fotografía

Antes del 2018 más o menos mi principal fuente de ingresos consistía en vender mis fotografías documentales y de street en un feria en la Habana vieja, en general no me iba mal , solo que es un negocio que dependía principalmente del turismo, los visitantes de otros países eran mis clientes mayoritarios, pero el inconveniente era su inestabilidad por temporadas

Así que mi espíritu emprendedor ya estaba encendido hacia tiempo, buscando algo más, que me diera una alternativa paralela y que funcionara en todas las épocas del año

Con esa idea en la cabeza , decidí crear un estudio de fotografía con un espacio libre que tenía en mi casa y que con algo de creatividad y esfuerzo, podía conseguir convertirlo en un lugar bueno para hacer ese extra que estaba buscando y además tener mi propio espacio de experimentación para hacer fotos y pintar

After a bit of study and time on you tube I already had a pretty clear idea of what I wanted to do and how to do it without having to sell one of my kidneys 😅😅😅.

The first thing was to make the door, because when I would close that the front, inside I could do everything else.

To do this I had the help of my friend from school Yannel who was working quite well the blacksmithing, he told me the materials I would need and after buying them, between the two of us we made the door and mounted it in the agreed place , this process lasted about three months but we made it. Without his expertise and selfless support I would not have been able to do it.

Después de un poco de estudio y de tiempo en you tube ya tenía una idea bastante clara de lo que quería hacer y cómo hacerlo sin tener que vender uno de mis riñones 😅😅😅.

Lo primero era hacer la puerta, porque cuando cerrará ese el frente, adentro podía hacer todo lo demás.

Para ello conté con la ayuda de mi amigo de la escuela Yannel que estaba trabajando bastante bien la herrería, el me dijo los materiales que necesitaría y luego de comprarlos, entre los dos hicimos la puerta y la montamos en el lugar acordado , este proceso duró cerca de tres meses pero lo conseguimos. Sin su experticia y su apoyo desinteresado no lo hubiera conseguido

Then he had to continue closing the space on one side had a lattice and on the other some columns, in the back a small room that would also open to be part of the study.

Luego tenía que continuar cerrando el espacio por un lado tenía una celosía y por el otro unas columnas , en la parte de atrás un pequeño cuarto que se abriría también a formar parte del estudio

I had it very clear and as they say if you can see it, you can do it, so I followed the plan.
For the masonry I had help again, this time my brother Osiris, Reynaldo and Penishe, the latter two my neighbors for years, were in charge of supporting me and giving me once again their experience, because they had been working in construction for a long time.
Lo tenía muy claro y como dicen si puedes verlo , puedes hacerlo entonces fui siguiendo el plan señalado.

Para la albañilería conté nuevamente con ayuda, esta vez mi hermano Osiris , Reynaldo y Penishe , estos dos últimos mis vecinos de años, fueron los encargados de apoyarme y brindarme una vez más su experiencia, pues hacia mucho trabajaban en labores constructivas.

Little by little, block by block, the thing was consolidating, I ordered the materials from some guys who brought them to my house in a horse-drawn cart, still at that time it was relatively easy to get them, in times of pandemic and later it would have been impossible or too expensive because inflation in Cuba has multiplied prices by 5.

Poco a poco, bloque a bloque, se iba consolidando la cosa, los materiales los encargaba a unos muchachos que en un carretón de caballos me los traían hasta la casa , todavía en ese tiempo se conseguía con relativa facilidad , en tiempo de pandemia y posterior hubiera sido imposibles o demasiado caros pues la inflación en Cuba a multiplicado los precios por 5.

The next step was a critical point and it endangered the realization of the project itself, we had to break the back wall, carefully to preserve the window and put it on the side, if something happened to it, the project would go over budget.

El paso siguiente era un pto crítico y en el peligraba la realización del proyecto en si , debíamos romper la pared del fondo , cuidadosamente para preservar la ventana y ponerla en el lateral, si algo le ocurría, el proyecto se iría de presupuesto.

Between Penishe, Reynaldo and myself we were able to successfully pull out the window, but not without a few laughs because Reynaldo could barely hold it there and I joked with him that he lacked strength, but it was a good team effort.

Now a concern arose, it had to be put that same day in the hole that we preserved for it on the right, because otherwise the security of the house was compromised, since thieves could enter in the early morning.

Entre Penishe , Reynaldo y yo logramos satisfactoriamente arrancar la ventana , no sin hecharnos unas cuantas risas porque Reynaldo casi no podía sujetarla ahí le heché unas bromas con que estaba faltó de fuerza , pero fue un buen trabajo en equipo

Ahora surgía una preocupación , se debía poner ese mismo día en el hueco que preservamos para ello a la derecha, porque sino la seguridad de la casa estaba comprometida,ya que podían entrar ladrones por la madrugada

We quickly prepared the mixture, the support poles and so on, we propped up, material here, shims there and it was well assembled so that when it dried everything would be impeccable 👌.

Rápidamente preparamos la mezcla los palos de soporte y demás, apuntalamos , material aquí, calza por allá y quedó montada bien puesta para que cuando secara todo quedara impecable.👌

I was already feeling more confident and assertive, and at the same time happy that things were coming together.

Ya me sentía más seguro y firme , al mismo tiempo alegre de que se fueran articulando las cosas.

By breaking the wall that held the window, I would have my almost 8 meters of study space right up to the wall that adjoins my room.

Ya al romper la pared que sujetaba la ventana me quedaría mis casi 8 metros de estudio justo hasta la pared que colinda a mi cuarto.

From this point on I would release my friends and stay working alone inside my premises.

De este punto en adelante liberaría a mis amigos y me quedaría trabajando solo dentro de mi local

There was still a lot to do, but the hardest work was already done, now everything depended on me with persistence and little by little to finish everything.

Quedaba mucho por hacer todavía, pero ya los trabajos más fuertes estaban hechos, ahora todo dependía de mí con persistencia y de a poco lograr terminar todo.

I did some research and the least a door of that size would cost me was about $600, with that money I could buy almost all the equipment and accessories I needed to work with so it was not an option for me.

I had two old doors from a closet and some plastic, so I decided to make something by myself again, knowing that it would not be too perfect but taking into account that it was something of separation and would be covered by the back curtain, it was the most logical choice to make.

Me puse a averiguar y lo menos que me costaría una puerta de ese tamaño serían unos 600 dólares, con ese dinero podía comprar casi todo el equipo y accesorios que necesitaba para trabajar así que para mí no era una opción

Tenía dos puertas viejas de un clóset y algo de plástico , así que decidi hacer nuevamente algo por mi mismo , sabiendo que no sería demasiado perfecto pero teniendo en cuenta que era algo de separación y estaría tapada por la cortina de fondo, era la opción más lógica a realizar

The painting was a mess, I had some columns painted with red oil, which were in the middle, I painted everything white except for the walls around where the models would go that I used gray to soften the reflections of unwanted lights on people.

La pintura era un desastre , tenía unas columnas pintadas con aceite rojo, que estaban en medio , lo pinté todo blanco excepto por las paredes de alrededor de donde irían los modelos que usé gris para que fueran más suaves los reflejos de luces no deseadas sobre las personas

On the outside of the door, it was time to do something eye-catching to attract the attention of passers-by.

I started collecting images from Pinterest that caught my attention and made a kind of collage with it from the idea of a woman taking a picture, and of course I looked for an image of a Leica M6 as I cannot deny my taste for classics 😂.

En la parte exterior de la puerta tocaba hacer algo que llamara la atención para que atrajera la vista de los transeúntes.

Empecé a recopilar imágenes de Pinterest que me llamaba la atención y hice una especie de collage con ella a partir de la idea de una mujer tomando una foto, y por supuesto busque una imagen de una Leica pues no puedo negar mi gusto por los clásicos 😂

So I undertook the painting of a meter and a half high by almost three meters wide, as I was inspired I think it took me no more than a week to do it, using the technique of oil painting in black and white with some touches of color to enhance and give a certain sensuality to the image.

Así emprendí la pintura de metro y medio de alto por casi tres de ancho, como andaba inspirado creo que no me tomó más de una semana realizarla , usando la técnica del óleo en blanco y negro con algunos toques de color que realizarán y le dieran cierta sensualidad a la imagen

Then I had to do some shopping, I bought several meters of gray carpet, a friend gave me an extra background kit of felt also to combine.
I also bought two studio flashes with their bounce umbrellas plus an extra modifier that I invented with cardboard.

Luego si ya me tocó hacer unas compritas, compré varios metros de alfombra gris , un amigo me regaló un kit the background extra de fieltro también para combinar.
Además compré , dos flashes de estudio con sus sombrillas de rebote más un modificador extra que me inventé con cartón

Then I bought and installed a Split because here in Cuba it is too hot and the clients were going to melt, this meant a new problem to solve, the metal doors let the cold escape and in the afternoons they were heated by the sun.

Luego compré e instale un Split pues aquí en Cuba hace demasiado calor y se me iban a derretir los clientes, esto supuso un nuevo problema a solucionar, las puertas de metal dejaban escapar el frío y en las tardes se calentaban por el sol

The inventiveness was put to the test again, polyfoam that I collected in the streets and stores, and newspapers glued with paste (viscous mixture made of flour and water that glues many things 😂) proved to be a superb insulator 😎😎

La inventiva se puso a prueba nuevamente, poliespuma que recolecte en las calles y tiendas,y periódicos pegados con engrudo ( mezcla viscosa hecha de harina y agua que pega muchas cosas 😂) resultaron ser un aislante soberbio 😎😎

After that, there were the finishing touches, hanging some pictures, the laptop on a small desk that I already had, a little more paint and to work!!!!

Después de eso , quedaban los últimos retoques , colgar algunos cuadros, la laptop en un pequeño escritorio que ya tenía, un poco más de pintura y a trabajar!!!

In this studio I have taken many of the photos that you can see in the portfolio of my profile, as well as some of my paintings, it has not replaced my source of income but it has certainly helped me a lot, especially in the time of pandemic I practically survived thanks to having created it because tourism stopped completely in the country.

For those who may be thinking of creating a similar place, I recommend it. Will it be easy to do? Maybe not, but it will certainly be rewarding after finishing it.

En este estudio he realizado muchas de las fotos que pueden ver en el portafolio de mi perfil, como también algunos de mis cuadros, no ha sustituido mi fuente generadora de ingresos pero sin duda me ha ayudado muchísimo, sobre todo en el tiempo de pandemia prácticamente sobreviví gracias a haberlo creado porque el turismo se detuvo completamente en el país

Para aquellos que puedan estar pensando crearse un lugar parecido , se los recomiendo. Será de fácil? Quizás no, pero sin duda si será gratificante luego de terminarlo

All the pictures used in this post have been taken by me and my wife with different cell phone, the editing of the images was done in Photoshop. The Banners were made in canvas , Inshot and Snapseed
