Hello my dear Hive friends

I have been working as a photographer in Havana, Cuba and with the tourism that visits us.
After the passage of the pandemic is a sector that has been somewhat weak, but still is one of the jobs that in general sense can be better developed here.

I participate in a community project where on weekends a large group of artists get together in one of Havana's main arteries, Prado Street, and there we give classes to children, sell our art to tourists and share in different cultural activities.

A few weekends ago I met a friend from South Africa who currently lives in Germany, he showed a special interest in my photographs, but not as a buyer but because he himself was taking pictures of the city and when confronted with my framing he thought it would be great if I gave him a tour, showing him the most interesting places where I had taken my photos.

So we made an appointment for the next day and set out on the adventure of a kind of Havana safari, where he could capture through the lens a group of images that would represent the city, its people and its culture.

I have been doing this job for a long time, but with the pandemic I was already a little rusty, so at first I was a little nervous, despite that, I was interested that Reuben could enjoy a singular and unique experience, where he could witness with his own eyes the real Havana and not the one they tell the tourists.
Therefore, we avoided the touristy places and go into the jungle of houses where ordinary people live with their stories and dilemmas.

At each step I was advising him some technical parameters and also in terms of concepts, the type of photography that could be done in each place, what was a bodega (place where some food products are sold with a supply book) and so different aspects of daily life that never a tourist walking through it could understand because it belongs to the local universe and well Cuba really is a world apart.

So we shared a good couple of hours between laughs and pictures with very good energy and ended up relieving the local heat with two beers in a bar talking bad about the government as it should be 🤣🤣🤣

I like this kind of activities very much, because I can exchange with people from different parts of the world and get to know different realities that I have not been able to see by myself.

After his departure, Reuben wrote to me thanking me again for the tour and told me that in the next vacation he would come back to try to make a longer trip around the island where he could take pictures in different places, for which he would hire me as a guide and travel companion.

Hola mis queridos amigos de Hive

Hace tiempo que trabajo como fotógrafo en la Habana, Cuba y con el turismo que nos visita.
Después del paso de la pandemia es un sector que se ha encontrado algo débil, pero aun así es uno de los trabajos que en sentido general mejor se pueden desarrollar por acá.

Yo participo de un proyecto comunitario que los fines de semana nos reunimos un grupo grande de artistas, en una de las principales arterias de la Habana, la calle Prado y allí damos clases a los niños, vendemos nuestro arte a los turistas y compartimos en diferentes actividades culturales

Hace algunos fines de semana conocí a un amigo de Sudáfrica que actualmente vive en Alemania, él mostró un especial interés por mis fotografías, pero no como comprador sino porque el mismo estaba tomando fotografías de la ciudad y al confrontar mis encuadres le pareció que sería genial si yo le hiciera un tour, mostrándole los lugares más interesantes donde había tomado mis fotos

Así que nos citamos para el día siguiente y emprendimos la aventura de realizar una especie de safari habanero, donde él pudiera capturar a través del lente un grupo de imágenes que representarán la ciudad, su gente y su cultura.

Este trabajo hace tiempo que lo he realizado, pero con el tema de la pandemia ya me encontraba un poco oxidado, así que al principio me dio un poco de nervios, pese a eso, me interesaba que Reuben pudiera disfrutar de una experiencia singular y única, donde pudiera atestiguar con sus propios ojos la verdadera Habana y no la que les cuentan a los turistas.
Por tanto, evitamos los lugares turísticos y nos adentramos en la selva de casas donde viven las personas comunes con sus historias y dilemas.

A cada paso yo lo iba aconsejando algunos parámetros técnicos y también en cuanto a conceptos, el tipo de fotografía que se podía hacer en cada lugar, lo que era una bodega (lugar donde se venden algunos productos alimenticios con una libreta de abastecimiento) y así diferentes aspectos de la vida diaria que nunca un turista caminando por el mismo pudiera comprender por pertenecer al universo local y bueno Cuba realmente es un mundo aparte

Así compartimos un buen par de horas entre risas y fotografías con muy buena energía y terminamos aliviando el calor local con dos cervezas en un bar hablando mal del gobierno como debe ser 🤣🤣🤣

Este tipo de actividades me gusta mucho, ya que puedo intercambiar con personas de diferentes lugares del mundo y llegar a conocer realidades diferentes que no he podido ver por mí mismo

Después de su partida, Reuben me escribió agradeciéndome nuevamente por el tour y me dijo que en próximas vacaciones volvería para intentar hacer un viaje más largo por la isla donde pudiera tomar fotografías en diferentes lugares, para lo cual me contrataría como guía y compañero de viaje.
