A Musical Market Friday Blog, New Digital Art and Photography
Musical Market Friday
Most of what I consume from a market perspective is in the form of museums and learning centers, or online of the musical or motion picture variety. I like to browse shops but almost always forget to chronicle my joureny in the digital. I should get better at that; so when I sit down to write for market Friday, I'll have some proof that I entered a shop or two. This week, I am going to beg you indulgence to consider Spotify as an online agora.
You can find just about any piece of music that has ever been recorded within the curved dashed green dot. Most of what I listen to is of the ambient variety. I place some phones in my ears and let the music replace my thoughts. Before you know it, you are meditating.
From my meditation list
Spotify is a great way to introduce the younger generation to the golden oldies ... which now include the music of your youth.
It's a way to introduce the kids to the music of 'your day' that doesn't involve Vecna and the teens of Stranger Things.
Spotify is also a treasure trove of covers. You gotta a classic favorite, chances are there, you will find more than a few covers.
Some covers don't live up the originals; some turn the sound around; and some are just plain silly; but the Spotify scavenger hunt of finding them is pure phonic fun. So join me as a I indulge in a dive beneath the covers.
Feel free to post your favourite, most obscure, or plain bizarre covers below. It'll be much appreciated and rewarded:)
I'm On Fire is likely the favorite Bruce Springsteen song for any non-Springsteen fan, and unlike his concerts, it isn't nearly long enough. Dark and haunting and relatable to anyone who has ever pined for the unavailable. The Chromatics version does not reach down to the depths of Bruce but adds an ethereal, almost new wave turn. It's not earthy, but dreamy and a little more haunting
.
My favorite song, hands down, is Melt with you by Modern English. Honestly, I think it may be the most perfectly New Wave song of all time.
Listening to the Bowling for Soup version, I note for the first time a ska element, that in this version has morphed top pop punk (aka baby punk)
Not particularly sold on the version, but perhaps back in the lated 90's and drunk on bad beer, the last day of classes, I would have been hyped.
Lot of charlatans out there telling us half truths and complete lies under which we are supposed to come together under. So I'll leave you with this version by Gary Clarke Jr and Junkie XL and a reminder to keep it sharp, even when you copy, or lose your edge.
What a lovely red flower, the freshness on the flower is making me happy as i see it.
Oh a wonderful musical market. This is a colourful and sonic world.
Thank you:)
Few covers match the original IMO. Of course that is fine, they can still be enjoyed. As much as I love Spotify and Amazon Music, it still by its nature is lacking when it comes to live recordings as they are often bootlegs. If I love a song, chances are I will love a live version just as much or even more. Ah for the glory days of Napster...
Youtube has tons of live versions but then you have to deal with youtube and WHO propaganda and censoring. I try to give them as little traffic as possible.
Bruce would sing to me! I was craving some, just a little bit.
Le sigh.
The first one off was simply lovely. It pulled me along, left and right sides, oh, so harmoniously. You always have such great taste.
Spotify isn't a market? Do tell. Don't you pay for it?
The roses, oh, my exquisiteness! You really are spoiling me! Thank you, beauty, for joining the challenge!
#MarketFriday began as a way to reach out across the globe and learn about different cultures through their markets, especially local markets and farmers' markets, and eventually branched out and evolved over time from straight shopping to a cultural affair as it highlights how we differ and then again, how much we are alike. We have become a melting pot of culture, but it is still the Rituals, Festivals, food, architecture, and even your language/languages that separate us... Along with the fact that these things are normal for us. There are unwritten rules that rule our social behaviors. I see this as allowing for increased tolerance between cultures and nations, and opportunities to come together on an even playing ground. A strong culture can be beneficial to a country as it promotes unity, especially during a crisis, peaceful debate, and open dialogue. I have learned so much about all of you and it has been an amazing experience. I can only hope that learning about each other can help us work together for a peaceful world. Thank you for being a part of #MarketFriday
