Silence of "Eiger" - Grindelwald First, Jungfrau Region | Switzerland
A small memory that worked as a healer and inspiration in my life. It's astonishing to think how a memory can significantly affect my life. The Switzerland trip always comes first whenever I think about my travel experiences and memories. Today I am going to write about a key location that I visited a long time ago. For some reason, I couldn't write about it till now, the reasons are unknown. Perhaps a part of me was not ready to share about it, even though this memory is one of my key memories.
I visited Jungfrau - Grindelwald during my first trip to Switzerland, so it's been a long time since I visited this spot. Normally, people go to such a Swiss Alps spot for skiing. Anyway, it was springtime when I went there, so my experience and captures are completely different. Well, to find the precise location where I actually went, I needed to do a little bit of study. At first, I thought I was in Jungfrau, then I thought I was in Jungfraujoch, but later I figured out where I was. To understand the spots, a little bit of study is needed because these locations are all quite similar and located close to each other.
Grindelwald First
Grindelwald is a beautiful, famous alpine village located in the canton of Bern, in the Bernese Oberland region. It is one of the famous tourist locations and is known for different activities, and the First Cliff Walk by Tissot. We stayed at Malters (Swiss Village) and drove to Grindelwald, crossing Lungern and Brienz. On our way, we have enjoyed the panoramic and scenic view of Lake Lungern. It was around 1 hour, 45 minutes journey as far as I have remembered. Grindelwald is a part of the Jungfrau Region, nestled at the foot of the Eiger North Face.

After reaching the Grindelwald area, a lot of beautiful wooden Swiss chalets welcomed me. Well, obviously, most of these chalets were hotels, restaurants, and other businesses. We then walked to the Firstbahn, from where we got our tickets to the Grindelwald First gondola (to the Cliff Walk and hiking trails). Grindelwald First is located 2,168 meters (7,113 ft) above sea level, so it took 25 minutes to reach the First Station by Firstbahn gondola.
The beginning of the gondola ride was amazing until I found out I was having breathing issues, and I have altitude sickness. The higher the gondola went, the more I had breathing issues. At a certain point, I was feeling suffocated, so I couldn't do anything except sit in the corner in the gondola. I don't know whether it was altitude sickness or something else, but it was something to me at that moment.
After reaching Grindelwald First, I needed a little bit of time to breathe and adjust before going further. I don't know what I was expecting, but obviously I wasn't expecting such sickness at that moment. Because I knew that the picturesque moment was waiting for me.
After reaching Grindelwald First, I needed a little bit of time to breathe and adjust before going further. I don't know what I was expecting, but obviously I wasn't expecting such sickness at that moment. Because I knew that the picturesque moment was waiting for me. I found a panoramic spot to sit down. The spot was at the heart of the Bernese Alps and was surrounded by a large range of mountains. The towering peaks were the Eiger, Wetterhorn, and Schreckhorn. This was the most favourite spot of my life from where I was able to visualize and enjoy the beautiful, dramatic landscape, a blend of rugged mountain landscape and green, gentle meadows.
From this point, hikers can go to see Bachalpsee lake or can take the Eiger Ultra Trail to hike. I didn't do any of these activities, I was just sitting there, wanting to experience the vastness and beauty of the Alps.

Back then, I was dealing with a lot mentally, so hiking or doing activities was not my cup of tea. I saw many energetic tourists, hikers, but I chose to sit down in front of the large range of the mountains. Infront of me was the snowy peak of the mountains, green meadows, rugged landscape, and paragliders. Seeing those paragliders flying freely inspired me to do paragliding later during my second trip to Switzerland. My group of people went to different spots, but I was stuck at one spot. Strange, isn't it, but the spot was like a healer for me. My broken heart, soul somehow found a place to heal a bit.

I was not alone by myself, a lot of tired tourists were sitting near me. Even though there were a lot of tourists, there was definitely some kind of calmness from where I was seeing the mountain. To be honest, I don't have much explanation about this spot. Also, these photos are not enough to describe the beauty of this spot.

The next point was the thrilling "First Cliff Walk by Tissot"- a Narrow metal walkway. This metal walkway was suspended along the rugged cliffs and offered a picture-worthy panoramic view of alpine scenery. Located over 2,000 meters above sea level, this thrill walk reminded me of my height phobia back then. The starting point was nice, I enjoyed the jaw-dropping beautiful green meadow, pasture, and vast mountain view, but my biggest mistake was looking down. When I looked down, I couldn't move forward and stood at one point. The bridge was narrow, so there was less chance to stand at one spot due to the tourist rush. There were a few platforms with a glass surface for the tourists to take photos and experience the height of the bridge. While walking towards the photo point, one can experience a floating feeling above the valley. The entry is free, so anyone can go there.
I was not confident enough back then to do adventurous things. This cliff rock formation was interesting. Also, noticed the lock area where people lock their love.

Did I regret not completing such a thrilling walk? No...I have no regret.

If I pushed myself, I probably would have ended up with another memorable experience, but my health didn't allow me back then. It was fine by me, I could have done a lot of activities there, but I didn't.
Our next attraction was "First Flieger", also known as First Flyer. This is one of the popular tourist attractions and a lot of activities were offered here, like zip line (first flyer), glider, mountain cart, Trottibike, and so on. You need to book your ticket first online because spot purchase is almost impossible due to popularity. Imagine doing such activities and adventurous things in such an atmosphere!!! Amazing experiences an individual could gather.

I have taken a lot of photos and videos here. Of course, I wanna mention Swiss cows. When I was there, I acted like I had never seen cows in my entire life, lollll... I recorded the sound of cow bells, truly amazing. Some might find that sound very annoying, but I love the sound; it is kind of rhythmic music.
![]() | ![]() | ![]() |

The breathtaking view of Eiger and the surrounding peaks, the panoramic mountain vista, the green pasture, and the song of cow bells reminded me of my purpose in life. Back then, I was completely heartbroken, so this was truly a life lesson getaway.

Different people have different mindsets, and they experience things differently. Some do hiking along with adventurous activities, and some are curious. I did nothing except strolling around and sitting lazily infront of the vast peaks of the mountains. I felt calmness, I saw beauty and creation, I witnessed people, and felt the silent callings of the mountains. I guess that was enough for me to heal my heart.
I ended my trip buying some souvenirs, especially a cowbell keychain and magnets. People get annoyed whenever I use that keychain, but I don't care. As far as I am happy, nothing else matters...

I am genuinely a lucky person because not everyone in life can experience such beauty like me. I have been to so many locations, but this area I will recall often. Especially the song of the bells (clanging), the mountains, and the green.
Thanks to all for reading and stopping. I will be back to you soon...

That's some stunning scenery, as always expected from Switzerland, it's been such a long long time since I last went. Sometimes, just sitting there calmly, soaking it all in in the best, no need to walk and cover the entire area. Just listen to what your body wants, it knows best
Hi Pauline, I guess your moment has come to visit the Alpine regions soon. I did nothing back then except sit in front of this view for more than an hour. Many people thought that some captured photos were planned, but that's not entirely the truth. I genuinely sat there for more than an hour. You are right, I need to listen to my body often, which I don't do most of the time 🤣.
How are you, by the way? Thank you for stopping by, always appreciate your comment...
So many beautiful sceneries in the Alps! Need to go there one of these days.
The beauty of the Alps won't disappoint you, and no matter how many times you visit the same Alps region, it's never enough...Thanks for stopping by...
Thank you for sharing your beautiful moments with so many beautiful pictures. I wish i could go to Switzerland one day ❤️✨
Thank you so much, I really had a lovely moment there and was able to create lifetime memories for myself that I often cherish. I hope one day your wish will come true as well...
Glad to hear you enjoy this journey. Thank you so much😊
stunning!
Thanks @ivansnz , this location is also a dreamy location for landscape photographers and videographers...
It's so lovely to see you back and with another epic and beautifully written post!
I personally don't see why people 'need' so many activities. Admittedly, many are fun and exciting, and the walk on the metal path looked brilliant, but what's wrong with simply being able to enjoy the incredible scenery? It's one of the most beautiful places on earth. I would, however, be a little wary where I sat, though with all those cows around...
Keep collecting happy places, and you'll always have somewhere to go where you know you'll feel well and have serenity.
I still can't believe you went up in a paraglider on a later trip...completely bonkers!
So happy to see you and I hope life is gradually becoming less difficult for you. Take care and best wishes always :-)
Hello, my friend Nathen, I knew I would get feedback from you, but was not expecting it so soon...🤣
I guess some travellers think that they spend so much money on the trip, so they try their best to experience everything all at once. But of course, the experience differs from person to person. Some love walking, and some, like me, always try to find a spot to sit down and appreciate the moment. I often hear complaints from people that I am not an ideal traveler, and to be honest, I don't mind. I love comfort, I love appreciating my moment, that's all...
True indeed...
Hahaha, I guess I was so jealous when all the people were climbing the mountains, walking on the suspended bridge, or paragliding at Jungfrau...My next adventure will be skydiving or another paragliding, but no idea when or where. Probably ALPS again...
I am doing well, giving myself a lot of time... I look better now, so probably soon will make a video showing my face...🤣
Thank you so much, also feel good whenever I talk to you...
I'm glad you're working through things and giving yourself the time and breathing space, its so important not to rush or place unnecessary time constraints on yourself as this will only lead to increasing the pressure you feel and that's a vicious circle.
A picture would be a great idea, I think. Hive is missing the glamour of your supermodel style sultry pout and dark glasses :-)
One of the kindest compliments I've ever been paid, thank you so much.
You take care and have the best week you can :-)

Wow, that was really amazing, a really profound life experience, all the unforgettable memories, the view was really amazing, I really loved it, really.Amazing nature, ❤️
Thank you so much, really appreciate your feedback. I am glad I could write a meaningful life experience and share it with everyone.
What a view! 😍 😍😍
And you look like a star ✨ 😘
Thanks a lot, Asia, that large hat worked like magic. I realized hiding my face was the best decision indeed...🤣
Hahaha absolutely no hiding it, but the hat is really great 😎
😁😁
The world of Heidi, Girl of the Alps really does exist!
Regarding the photo with lots of locks, there are similar famous spots in Japan too.
It's fascinating to think that people all around the world are doing the same thing☺️
Yes indeed. The Alps area is no less than a fairytale or a novel. A spot made for painters, photographers, and writers...
Really!! In Kharkiv, Ukraine, we had a lock bridge where newlywed couples used to go after their wedding. It was a belief that if they locked their love, their married life would be healthy and prosperous. I saw a similar bridge in Cologne Germany, Italy, and Poland too. You are right; a lot of people around the world believe in this.
Thank you for noticing such a key part of this post...
Beautiful photography and a truly awakening moment up in the mountains.
It's a great memory to have of these healing moments. I'm sure this trip has been a source of inspiration for many years. I had a similar experience in South Africa. 📸👍
Absolutely. So far, I have been to so many places, have seen amazing locations, landmarks, but this magnificent beauty truly got my heart and soul. I never knew that a simple spot could do magic and could work as a healer; this place completely changed that perspective...
Thank you so much...
Yep some places have that powerful effect on us. I sat in my place in South Africa and it totally changed my direction in life. Fond memories and still inspiring 22 years later 👍
That's a powerful statement, I would say, and also a life-changing experience... You are right, some memories are like gold, they never get old...
Thanks for your comments. I might write about my own experience with this phenomenon. I have to find the photos of the day it dawned on me that I had agency for my own life.
I didn't take the photo which was amazing but the moment was captured perfectly by my daughter.
It was only afterwards that I saw the photo and realised that that was the moment of my evolution.
Sounds mad when you think about it 😂👍
It is a really good idea to write about it, to reflect and memorise your feelings of the past. It changed your whole perspective on life, so it is definitely worth sharing with us.
Amazing...
It might be, but I can relate to that.
Oh my goodness... A landscape picture made with an exquisite sense of composition and taking advantage of every available element in a perfect way!... A round of applause for this!!!! 📷💯

Wow, you really felt the picture because when I took this photo, I didn't do much except framing. I just wanted to keep this moment to myself because I cannot live there...😅 I am so happy that you liked this photograph and gave a true meaning to this amazing picture...
Thank you so much...
Well, there's a lot of very good photographic instinct in that shot and in your whole work!... Congratulations on that @priyanarc!... Have a great week! 🙏

This is why I told you, better go travel, collect memories as object are fun to have and collect, but they joy they give you last very little.
This is normal, don't bash yourself about it. Things need to settle down in your head and heart and you'll know when it is time. I feel the same sometimes and post late about my experience, weather it's an exhibition, or a trip.
You're a genius, I'd have never thought of recording a sound, to have it later, but I'm glad you did.
I'm so proud of you Priyan! I really am! Even sick as you were, you made a huge effort to go up there, you dealt with your issues that appeared and still made the most of the experience and now this trip is a nice memory, that will last till the end of your life.
The place is stunning, needless to say. It's my goal to live there and working hard to make it happen. It's just a different world for those who can see the beauty of it.
Sending 🤗💚 and thinking of you often. Stay safe! You've made huuuuuge progress!
Yes, you told me several times, as I remember. I really enjoy seeing the beauty of this world and love to appreciate it. Little by little, they help to heal my soul...
Yes, that's why I am not pushing myself hard. I still struggle, but I am overcoming each and every challenge in life. Writing can wait for a while until I recover fully...
Thank you, Erikah, your words often motivated me, and I genuinely appreciate your kindness and support. I was in a dark place, and I really feel lucky and proud that I worked on myself. Gave myself priority...I miss our conversation, hope we can have a conversation soon...
😇😍
The landscape is wonderful! It can never be seen in tropical countries and this is the most anticipated for us by saving and hoping to go there soon. 😍
Tropical countries have different geography, but I personally love tropical countries...This area in Switzerland is one of the most anticipated locations among tourists. We, asian love this Alps region...
Thanks a lot for taking time to read my post...
What a beautiful post Priyan. It is even more touching that it took awhile for you to be able to write about it. I love that you could sit in this gorgeous landscape and take it in and heal your heart and soul. I do want to visit this spot some day. It is stunning!
I would highly recommend visiting the Alpine region, especially the Jungfrau Region. You won't regret it, and it will definitely be a precious life experience. Whenever I am upset, I watch these photos, see the videos, and hear the recording. This spot has a meaning to me... I am glad you liked the post, appreciate it a lot... Thank you for stopping by @sjarvie5
Beautiful pictures! Almost unreal looking landscapes. Too bad about your altitude sickness, how would you even know if you have something like that?
And about walking that cliff walk, if you have fear of heights that could have been a nightmare. My approach to visiting places is that I want to enjoy them and not necessarily do or see everything.
That's true. I knew about my height phobia, but didn't have any idea about altitude sickness. I guess hiking/climbing the mountains is not for me...
The landscape was magnificent and in person it really looks unreal; a view of a postcard...I am still scared of heights, but less than before. That's why, back then, I stopped in the middle of the bridge and had to return because I was scared.
Me too... I like to appreciate my moments and love to make them precious...
Those views are amazing, and it looks like you chose the absolute perfect spot for healing and re-grounding yourself! Splendid! I think too many times in life we try to "Go, go! Do, do!" and fail to stop and just "BE" 💗
I was pushy, and I can be pushy sometimes. There was a point in life where I wanted almost everything for myself and pushed myself so hard. I am still learning how to calm myself down and not force myself to overdo things. When it comes to travelling, I often prefer comfort because I like to cherish my moment instead of running here and there. I saw some people who just take photos and go somewhere else. They don't appreciate the moments...
Thank you so much for connecting with me, it's been a while since we last spoke... I hope you are doing well @thekittygirl
Yes, I am doing well 💖

It's a beautiful place. I've often heard that the mountain environment has a therapeutic effect, helping people heal, and looking at the images, I think they're right.
It's a shame the altitude affected you during that walk, but in reality, it can happen to many people. Just being in that place is enough to remind you of it; it's a very pleasant experience.
As a curious fact, in many religious beliefs, bells and jingles annoy evil spirits, which is why the temples of many religions have bells.
It's assumed that people dominated by a dark spirit become irritated if they hear the sound of bells or jingles.
That's true because the atmosphere indeed has the power to refresh the mindset and heal. It's like a therapy, and for me, just watching those vast mountains was a priceless therapy session...
I knew about altitude sickness, but I didn't know how it felt. It was really suffocating...I was glad that I didn't faint...
Yes, Hinduism has that belief indeed. For me, that sound is therapeutic even though many people find it annoying and harsh...
Yes, just like wind chimes...
Thank you for such insightful feedback. I hope you are doing well...
You're so right. Not everyone has the fortune of seeing such incredible places. I'm glad your broken heart was impressed by so much beauty. I hope it heals completely and you can look at life with a healthy heart.
When I see a cow, I'll remember you and I'll be as surprised as if I've never seen one before. Hehehehehe, no one will believe me, but it will make me very happy to pretend just like you. Hehehehe
Yea and that's why I took photos of the cow, they live a good life there, better than mine, I would say.
Back then, I had a lot of things going on, and I was living a messy moment in life. I feel really fortunate, often whenever I see these photos. I was the lucky one who got the chance to calm my mind, heal a little bit, and enjoy the beauty...
Thanks a lot for stopping by, appreciate your time...
Beautiful photos. The part about the towns being close together and having similar names (making them difficult to find) made me smile, because that happens quite often in my country.
Altitude sickness is a dangerous thing; I've read about cases where people are left offline for hours. It's good that even though it affected you, it wasn't that severe.
As for the fear of heights, I suffer from it too, and it gave me a chill to think about having a transparent floor on a bridge over a cliff.
I certainly wouldn't have expected to be so fascinated by a cow. But you never know, maybe if I travel to the site I'll find them fascinating and take pictures of them too (even with the LOL you mentioned).
Although the sound of bells can be annoying to some people, I remember that they are sometimes used for therapy, religious rituals, and other activities seeking mental and spiritual peace.
I think overall these are nice memories.

It can happen, I am glad it was not so severe for me. The height and the ride were not that much. The problem is that the higher you go, the oxygen level gets lower, so you have to follow a breathing technique. I didn't know back then, so I became sick...
Yes, but people say if you wanna enjoy the beauty, you need to go through some obstacles...😝
Yes, you never know...🤣
Yes, you are right...
Thank you, my friend, for stopping by and taking the time to read such a long post... I appreciate your support...
You're welcome!
Rather, I appreciate you sharing the photos and the experience of the trip.
Thank you...
Oh wow! What a breathtaking view. The place is so peaceful. Perfect for unwinding while sitting on the grass, looking at the scenery that surrounds you.❤️Nice shots!
Absolutely and that's why I didn't miss the opportunity to sit down and relish the beauty that was offered in front of me. It was so nice...

I've only just seen this. I'm late to the party AGAIN! For a split second I thought it was Julie Andrews in the Sound of Music sat there until I realised it was Switzerland. What gorgeous scenery. I can understand why it was healing for you. 🥰
Nope you are not late... Party just started...🤣
See, hiding my face did work, I will keep my face hidden more often...
The spot was gorgeous, wonderful... Hope oneday I will be able to go to the Alps region again...
Oh my! I love that First Cliff Walk but the view leaves you speakless too!
Hi Gabriela, how are you? I guess it's time for you to travel to Switzerland to see and experience this beauty. I hope I convinced you enough...
Cliff walk is amazing to be honest, I would have managed to explore fully if I didn't look down directly 😅...

Thank you so much, Kate, I am glad that I could see such beauty in life. I feel blessed always...I wish you a wonderful weekend...
I've been skiing there, but it would be nice to see it at other times. We did the zipwire. I love the mountains and it's so different to where we live.
I hope you got over the breathing problems. I wouldn't expect that in the Alps generally.
That's amazing. How was the zipwire experience? Must be nice... I also love mountains, but due to health issues, I can't go hiking or do other adventurous things...
Yes, I am okay, and yes, I didn't expect such situations, but it happened. So, I guess my body is very sensitive...
Thank you so much... Glad you have shared your experience with me...
The zipwire was fun and it was free at the time. I do like skiing, but don't do it too often as it is an expensive holiday.
We saw the walkway on the cliff, but didn't get to do it whilst we were there. We were staying in Wengen over Christmas that year.

Once I tried to learn skiing but lost interest... I know it's expensive, very aware of the price now in Europe 😁 so I don't dare to book such holidays anymore...
I will do zipwire next time if there is an opportunity... Sounds fun...
I see... I would like to suggest you going Thrill walk, Birg... It's nice... I didn't go because of the phobia...

To be honest, these photos are not enough to justify the beauty that I have experienced in person. I had a wonderful time...

I am impress by your trip to Grindelwald and those photos of the Swiss mountains they just look amazing, the cable car ride up to 2k+ meters seems crazy and now I understand why people get altitude sickness up there I once got very dizzy when I went on a hike but it was nothing compared to what you must have felt, that walkway hanging off the edge of the cliff looks terrifying but also impressive at the same time I'd like to try walking across a place like that, even though heights make me very nervous. The way the mountains blend in with the green fields below is very beautiful it must be even better in person, it's good to know that you have to book in advance because I always forget and end up missing things when I travel.
Yes, there is a way to walk there, just don't look straight down. I had a height phobia back then, so I looked straight down and got scared. Altitude sickness is no joke, not everyone feels the same. Some people have a high tolerance level, and they don't have any problem when the oxygen level is low. When I was in a gondola/cable car, not only did I feel claustrophobic, but I also felt suffocated due to a lack of oxygen. I guess you also feel the same when you go hiking. I don't like to do hiking, my body never permits that...
Me too... Hahaha...
Even though the beginning of this trip was a struggle, everything went well in the end...
Thanks for stopping by...
