Rock Formation and Black Ernz River - Dense Forest and Beautiful Stream at Mullerthal Trail, Luxembourg

Even though my trip to Luxembourg was not so pleasant due to autumn weather and sickness, I was able to see a few nice locations. When the Luxembourg tour was planned, I didn't know we had to hike because I am not a fan of hiking. I knew we would go to a forest to see a waterfall but didn't know the location exactly because we were not given the exact location. Anyway, after visiting to famous Vianden Castle (the post will be written some other day) in Luxembourg, we directly started our journey to the forest.

It was cold, rainy autumn weather and after soaking in the rain already, I was already having headaches and migraine issues. My mistake was not carrying any medications. Anyway, we reached the Schiessentümpel Waterfall parking area from where our hiking started. Well, I won't say it was a long hike because our focus was to see the waterfall and beautiful river/stream.

The trail we were going to follow was called Mullerthal Trail Route 3. Mullerthal Trail is located in the Mullerthal Region which is known as Luxembourg's Little Switzerland. This region is renowned for its captivating rock formations and picturesque waterfalls along the Mullerthal Trail. One of the most iconic rock formations in the area is the Wolfsschlucht (Wolf's Gorge), a narrow canyon carved through the sandstone by the waters of the Black Ernz River. This dramatic gorge features towering rock walls covered in moss, creating a mystical atmosphere for hikers to explore.

There are 3 routes to explore this trail. Unfortunately, most of them are closed due to construction work and we didn't have much time to we just thought to take the shortcut way to see the Schiessentümpel Waterfall. Because people say it is a must-see tourist spot.

Just when we left the car and tried to find the trail to climb the hill, rain started. I would have enjoyed the weather and the freshness and colors of the dense forest if I hadn't suffered from migraine and muscle pain. I was already carrying the pain and the cold, rainy weather made it worse. Like I said, we took route 3 which actually features the forest, rock formations, stunning stream valleys, and waterfall.

Anyway when we started our hiking, I realized I wore the wrong shoes. Due to excessive heavy rain, the trail became muddy and slippery and it was hard to step on the rocks. Besides a lot of people were already on the trail so there was no going back for me. The 50-minute trail took me more than an hour to reach the waterfall because of rain and mud.

Both the rock formations and waterfalls along the Mullerthal Trail contribute to the region's enchanting allure and despite such bad weather experiences, I witnessed the exquisite beauty. Even though the trail was slippery, the view of the stream valley, the sound of the flowing stream, and the smell of the wet dense forest were alluring and exceptional. I regretted not wearing proper shoes but in the end, I managed to finish the trail. We could have followed the main street but we preferred the small hiking just to see the solid limestone rock formations and stream valley.

I was completely wet even though I was wearing a heavy jacket.

The river/stream is called Black Ernz, we basically followed the Black Ernz river.

Due to the rocky terrain of the area, route 3 hiking is difficult during the rainy season but tourists get stunning views. Imposing rock formation, deep valleys, and extensive plateaus; sandstones shaped the landscape of nature and forest. 200 million years ago, this area was bottom of the sea. Can you believe that?? On my way to the waterfall, I saw some amazing rock formations.

Autumn colors had made this area more beautiful and vibrant.

It was nice finding myself in the nature. I wanted to go a few spots within the trail but because the rocks became slippery, I didn't dare to go near those rocks to see the valley.

I personally enjoy being in nature so often enjoy exploring lush forests and waterfalls. Our entire group enjoyed this lovely hike except me. My choice of shoes and my sickness affected my hike and I couldn't enjoy it properly. I honestly can't blame the rain as other tourists were enjoying their moment in the forest near the valley and I saw it.

I have been to the forest before and enjoyed the colors of autumn but never been to such an exclusive location that has a significant history. The tranquil atmosphere, lush forest, and surroundings are really hard to write, it is only to cherish the moment.

If you ever plan to do Mullerthal trail hiking, I would say you need proper footwear and a moderate level of fitness otherwise it is tiring and difficult. Route 3 was approximately 11 kilometers long but we stopped our journey by seeing the waterfall. We didn't go deeper and also due to heavy rain, further hiking was almost impossible for me...

That's a bit annoying they didn't tell you in advance you needed to hike, plus hiking in the wet is never nice when you're unprepared.

That said it does look very nice there, hopefully you still enjoyed even a brief moment of calamity there

That was something that bothered me a lot because I was not prepared for such weather and rocky hike especially when I had to step on rocks. But it is a nice location to see and for those tourists who love hiking and want to be close to nature.

Thanks, Pauline for stopping by, I wish you a good weekend...

Absolutely agree with you, there is nothing compared to the power of nature's healing. I would have enjoyed the place a lot better if I had proper footwear and no headache. It was a bit stressful for me and scary as well due to the slippery situation but overall it was nice...

I appreciate your encouragement when it comes to photographs...

I was thinking about moving to Luxembourg some days ago, and I was wondering which kind of nature could I find there… You answer my question! Hehe. What a beautiful place! I love it! And you pictures are amazing!

I was thinking about moving to Luxembourg some days ago

Well, Luxembourg is currently offering a lot of opportunities for immigrants and skilled workers, even I thought of applying for some jobs but the living cost is really high there. Maybe you can consider this small country because it is historical with lush greenery.

What a beautiful place! I love it! And you pictures are amazing!

The trail is much more beautiful and offers to see castles as well. Well, I kinda feel happy that I was able to visit such a gorgeous forest and river...

I wish you a lovely weekend, thank you for your time...

Love the overall scenery! The nature seems so calm and peaceful on that part of the globe. I wish more places like these were everywhere, as we need this calmness more and more in our lives.

Unfortunately, not every country focuses on greenery and reserved forests. I liked how Luxembourg preserved this small piece of land and focused more on preserving history and greenery rather than development. I wish I had such a forest park in my area...

I wish more places like these were everywhere, as we need this calmness more and more in our lives.

Yes, completely agree with you... I hope you are doing great and planning for summer trips...

Have a great weekend dear...

It was nice to be in nature for a short time even though I was feeling sick. Such a beautiful location only can be experienced in person. I am glad you liked the location...

I don't like to walk in such a climate, I don't think I could enjoy even the most beautiful scenery if I have to suffer such a hike first.

Yes, the same feelings I was having at that moment being there. But now I kinda cherish the moment whenever I see the photographs...

El malestar y las náuseas fueron excesivos debido al clima, pero estoy seguro de que quienes visitan este lugar durante el verano lo disfrutan mucho. Es un hermoso lugar para los excursionistas. Gracias por valorar mi post...

Immediately I saw your post after publishing mine yesterday, I knew it would be worth reading as always. But I was having a migraine and super tired that staring at my phone screen wasn't the best choice.

I am sorry about your health. I hope you get better soon and now, you sure know how prepared you need to get next time you find your way there again .

The scene gives me goosebumps despite not being there. I love the spirit attached to nature, and you did well with the captures. You rock!

the sound of the flowing stream, and the smell of the wet dense forest were alluring.

And this, I agree with a hundred per cent because what's not to love about it? Just staring at it alone brings calmness to my heart and zooming it.... oh, it sure is unexplainable.

Thanks for taking these amazing pictures despite your health, the clothes worn, and the rain.

I was having a migraine

Migraine is a killer and I have been suffering with migraine for a long time. You should take proper rest and medication so that it doesn't become severe like mine. Mine is now considered chronic because long long-term disease.

The scene gives me goosebumps despite not being there.

Thank you for appreciating the location and its beauty. People often avoid such locations because of the hassle and travel costs. I personally liked the waterfall and the forest despite not feeling better at that moment.

Thanks, dear for taking the time to read the post, take care of yourself...

If you ever plan to do Mullerthal trail hiking, I would say you need proper footwear and a moderate level of fitness otherwise it is tiring and difficult.

I will keep this in mind and learn from your experience😊. I can imagine how hard it was to cope with the rain, slippery surfaces, and uncomfortable shoes. But I commend you for being persistent and still able to capture such good memories and informative pictures of the tourist site, rock formations, and the beautiful waterfall. This was a great experience, with nature at its best! Hope you recovered swiftly from the migraine and the cold weather!🌻
