Visit Portugal - Zoo Maia

After celebrating Children's Day, I wanted to do something special with my family, especially for my son. He's been very curious about animals lately, and we thought that a trip to the zoo would be both fun and educational.

After leaving the reptile section, we took a short break. There were several picnic tables and resting spots near the paths, shaded by large trees. We found a quiet bench and sat down to enjoy some snacks and water. Our son was still full of excitement from the reptiles, talking non-stop about the snakes and turtles he had just seen. But little did he know that even more surprises were waiting around the corner.

Once we were rested, we continued our walk through the zoo. The map at the entrance had shown many different animal areas and we wanted to see as much as we could. Our next stop was the primates.

Depois de deixarmos a secção de répteis, fizemos uma breve pausa. Havia várias mesas de piquenique e locais de descanso perto dos trilhos, à sombra de grandes árvores. Encontrámos um banco tranquilo e sentámo-nos para saborear alguns petiscos e água. O nosso filho ainda estava muito entusiasmado com os répteis, falando sem parar sobre as cobras e tartarugas que tinha acabado de ver. Mas mal sabia ele que ainda mais surpresas nos esperavam.

Depois de descansarmos, continuamos a nossa caminhada pelo jardim zoológico. O mapa à entrada mostrava muitas áreas com animais diferentes, e queríamos ver o máximo possível. A nossa próxima paragem foram os primatas.

As we approached the monkey area, we could already hear the sounds—high-pitched calls, rustling leaves, and playful noises. The enclosures were spacious and filled with ropes, trees, and climbing structures. We saw small monkeys swinging from branch to branch, their movements quick and full of energy.

À medida que nos aproximávamos da zona dos macacos, já podíamos ouvir os sons — chamados agudos, farfalhar de folhas e ruídos brincalhões. Os recintos eram espaçosos e estavam repletos de cordas, árvores e estruturas para escalar. Vimos pequenos macacos a balançar de galho em galho, com movimentos rápidos e cheios de energia.

There were also larger primates in nearby enclosures. We saw some calmly sitting in the sun, while others groomed each other or explored their surroundings. It was fascinating to observe how human like some of their behaviours were. Watching the monkeys interact reminded us how close we are to them in nature. It was both entertaining and educational.

Também havia primatas maiores em recintos próximos. Vimos alguns sentados calmamente ao sol, enquanto outros se limpavam ou exploravam os arredores. Foi fascinante observar como alguns dos seus comportamentos eram semelhantes aos humanos. Observar a interação dos macacos fez-nos lembrar o quão próximos estamos deles na natureza. Foi divertido e educativo.

There were also some ducks, swans and peacocks walking freely in some areas. One peacock suddenly opened its tail, showing off all its colours.

Havia também alguns patos, cisnes e pavões a passear livremente em algumas zonas. Um pavão abriu subitamente a cauda, ​​exibindo todas as suas cores. Foi impressionante!

As we walked through the zoo, we kept commenting on how clean and well maintained everything was. Trash bins were everywhere, and we didn't see litter on the ground. The enclosures were tidy, the animals looked healthy, and the pathways were clear.

Enquanto caminhávamos pelo jardim zoológico, comentávamos constantemente como tudo estava limpo e bem cuidado. Havia caixotes do lixo por toda a parte e não víamos lixo no chão. Os recintos estavam arrumados, os animais pareciam saudáveis ​​e os caminhos estavam limpos.

What surprised us most was how green the entire zoo was. Even though the zoo is located in the heart of Maia, it feels like you are far from the city. Tall trees provide shade, flowers decorate the paths, and you can hear birds singing almost everywhere you go. The zoo planners clearly made an effort to keep nature alive inside the city.

O que mais nos surpreendeu foi o quão verde era todo o jardim zoológico. Mesmo localizado no coração da Maia, a sensação é a de estar longe da cidade. As árvores altas proporcionam sombra, as flores decoram os caminhos e pode ouvir os pássaros a cantar em quase todos os lugares. Os planeadores do jardim zoológico esforçaram-se claramente para manter a natureza viva dentro da cidade.

The atmosphere was very calm and relaxing. There were families, school groups, couples, and even some people visiting alone. Everyone moved at their own pace, and there was plenty of space for walking without feeling crowded. Benches were placed throughout the zoo, perfect for taking breaks or just sitting quietly to enjoy the view.

O ambiente era muito calmo e relaxante. Havia famílias, grupos escolares, casais e até algumas pessoas a visitar sozinhas. Cada um movia-se ao seu próprio ritmo e havia bastante espaço para caminhar sem se sentir lotado. Foram colocados bancos por todo o jardim zoológico, perfeitos para fazer pausas ou simplesmente para se sentar em silêncio para apreciar a vista.

We spent several hours at the zoo, but the time passed quickly. There was always something new to see, something fun to discover. Even when we weren’t looking at animals, we enjoyed just walking around the beautiful green space.

Passámos várias horas no jardim zoológico, mas o tempo passou depressa. Havia sempre algo novo para ver, algo divertido para descobrir. Mesmo quando não estávamos a observar os animais, aproveitávamos para passear pela bonita zona verde.

Before leaving, we stopped by the small café near the exit. We had ice cream and some cold drinks while our son played in the nearby children's playground. It was the perfect way to end the day relaxed, happy and surrounded by nature.

Antes de sair, parámos no pequeno café perto da saída. Comemos gelado e algumas bebidas frescas enquanto o nosso filho brincava no parque infantil ali perto. Foi a forma perfeita de terminar o dia — relaxados, felizes e rodeados de natureza.
