Second one out of the box, and this time it really was his pick, not mine. He grabbed a Formula 1 car before I had even finished my coffee. Same routine as last time: pick it up, turn it over, read the base, find out what it actually is.

Last time the tooling year on the base happened to line up with the real car's year. This time it does not really tell me anything. The base says 2024, which is when this mold was cut, but there is no season or driver number printed anywhere, and Haas has run close variations of this white and black scheme across three different seasons. So I genuinely cannot tell you which year's car this is meant to represent. I am treating it as "the team" rather than "one specific car".
One more thing worth flagging: the toy number HYW10 also turns up attached to a Red Bull version of this same casting in a listing I found while searching. Whether Hot Wheels reuses the same base code across several decos in this line, or that listing was simply mislabeled, I could not confirm either way, so take it as a guess.
The real find, though, was learning that this casting is not specific to Haas at all. Hot Wheels did not tool a separate body for each of the eight F1 teams in this line. Ferrari, McLaren, Red Bull, Haas, all of them share the exact same shape, just with a different paint job. Under the current rules real F1 cars already converge on very similar silhouettes, so Mattel apparently decided one generic "F1 show car" could carry every team's colors instead of cutting eight separate molds. The base does not even name a team, it just reads "Formula 1 Collection".
The real car
Haas is the American entry on the grid, founded in 2016 by Gene Haas, who also owns the CNC machine tool company the team is named after. It runs out of two bases, Kannapolis in North Carolina and Banbury in the UK, and has used Ferrari engines and gearboxes since its very first season, which is why Ferrari red still shows up here and there despite Haas racing nowhere near the top of the constructors table.
The white and black look arrived as an evolution of an earlier, darker scheme once MoneyGram came on as title sponsor. It is the darkest livery Haas has carried since its debut car back in 2016, and it has stayed on the grid, with small changes season to season, ever since.
What survived the shrinking, and what did not
The nose and front wing are the best part of the model. The wing is moulded as separate slats rather than one flat blade, which surprised me on a car in this price range. The halo above the cockpit is there too, moulded as a proper loop instead of just being painted flat, and it is honestly the single detail that makes this read as "modern F1 car" rather than a generic open-wheeler.
The sponsor printing is small but legible. MoneyGram sits on the nose, HAAS runs along the side, and a cluster of smaller partner logos fills in underneath. There is no driver number anywhere on the body, which fits with this being a team deco rather than one driver's specific car.
The wheels are the weak point. They are plain black discs with a printed rim pattern standing in for the real car's exposed wheel nut and brake duct, and there is no attempt at Pirelli branding on the tyre wall. At this scale that is probably a fair trade-off, but next to a wing this detailed, it is the part that gives away the toy.
Second one done. He already has a third one waiting for me.

Segundo saiu da caixa, e desta vez foi mesmo ele que escolheu, não fui eu. Agarrou num carro de Fórmula 1 antes de eu sequer ter acabado o café. Mesma rotina de sempre: pegar, virar, ler a base, perceber o que é aquilo afinal.

Da última vez o ano do molde calhou bater certo com o ano do carro real. Desta vez não me diz grande coisa. A base diz 2024, que é quando este molde foi feito, mas não há temporada nem número de piloto impresso em lado nenhum, e a Haas correu variações muito próximas deste esquema branco e preto ao longo de três temporadas diferentes. Por isso não consigo mesmo dizer a que ano este carro corresponde. Estou a tratá-lo como "a equipa", não como "um carro específico".
Mais uma coisa a assinalar: o código do modelo, HYW10, também aparece associado a uma versão Red Bull deste mesmo casting num anúncio que encontrei a pesquisar. Se a Hot Wheels reutiliza o mesmo código de base em vários decos desta linha, ou se aquele anúncio estava simplesmente mal identificado, não consegui confirmar, por isso fica também como palpite.
A verdadeira descoberta foi perceber que este casting não é específico da Haas. A Hot Wheels não moldou um corpo diferente para cada uma das oito equipas de F1 desta linha. Ferrari, McLaren, Red Bull, Haas, todos partilham exatamente a mesma forma, só muda a pintura. Com o regulamento atual os carros reais de F1 já convergem para silhuetas muito parecidas, por isso a Mattel aparentemente decidiu que um "carro de exibição" genérico podia levar as cores de qualquer equipa, em vez de cortar oito moldes diferentes. A base nem sequer nomeia a equipa, diz apenas "Formula 1 Collection".
O carro real
A Haas é a entrada americana na grelha, fundada em 2016 por Gene Haas, dono também da empresa de máquinas CNC que dá nome à equipa. Funciona a partir de duas bases, Kannapolis na Carolina do Norte e Banbury no Reino Unido, e usa motores e caixas Ferrari desde a primeira temporada, razão pela qual o vermelho Ferrari ainda aparece aqui e ali apesar de a Haas andar longe do topo do campeonato de construtores.
O visual branco e preto surgiu como evolução de um esquema anterior mais escuro quando a MoneyGram entrou como patrocinador principal. É a pintura mais escura que a Haas usa desde o seu primeiro carro em 2016, e tem-se mantido na grelha, com pequenas alterações de temporada para temporada.
O que sobreviveu à redução, e o que não
O nariz e a asa dianteira são a melhor parte do modelo. A asa vem moldada em lâminas separadas em vez de uma peça plana única, o que me surpreendeu num carro desta gama de preço. O halo por cima do cockpit também está lá, moldado como um arco a sério em vez de apenas pintado, e é honestamente o único pormenor que faz este carro parecer um "F1 moderno" e não um monolugar genérico.
A impressão dos patrocinadores é pequena mas legível. A MoneyGram fica no nariz, a HAAS corre ao longo da lateral, e um conjunto de logótipos mais pequenos preenche o resto. Não há número de piloto em lado nenhum da carroçaria, o que bate certo com isto ser um deco de equipa e não o carro de um piloto específico.
As jantes são o ponto fraco. São discos pretos lisos com um padrão impresso a fazer de porca de roda exposta e conduta de travão, sem qualquer tentativa de reproduzir a marca Pirelli no pneu. A esta escala é provavelmente uma troca justa, mas ao lado de uma asa tão trabalhada, é a parte que denuncia o brinquedo.
Segundo feito. Ele já tem um terceiro à minha espera.
