Nature is a great source of contemplation for me. In every branch, leaf, sky, bird, insect, and every other living thing, I find a reason to admire what it represents: the power of creation and the perfect balance of shapes and colors.
The day I took these photographs in Michelena Park in the city of Maracay, where I usually go for walks and take Isis, my beloved dog, the dry season had, of course, brought about changes in the vegetation.
But these changes also have their own beauty. The heat is intense and it hasn’t rained in months, and every living thing adapts to these conditions.

Many trees have lost their leaves and are in their fruiting season. I like to see their branches spread out and cast shadows on the ground.
The fruits of the flamboyant tree, a very typical tree of this region, are large pods that hang from the branches, as shown in this photograph where the black ibis has stopped.

The grasses on the ground patiently await the rains to turn green again, and the dry leaves, as they fall from the trees, have covered the ground, protecting it and providing nutrients as they decompose, to return once more to the plant in a continuous cycle.

Many birds live in this area, and their songs fill the air. There’s one in particular that I see all year round, foraging on the ground, and they usually travel in pairs.
But this time, I had a hard time photographing it. I couldn’t get very close because, even though it didn’t fly very high, it would run away, and also because the color of its plumage blended in with the dry vegetation. This is a very common form of camouflage used by many animals as a defense mechanism.
These are the photos I was able to take of the stone curlew, which is the name of this bird. I know it’s hard to see, but this is the best my phone camera could do. It’s perfect camouflage.

La naturaleza es para mi una gran fuente de contemplación. En cada rama, hoja, cielo, ave, insecto y cualquier otro ser vivo, encuentro una razón de admiración, por lo que representa el poder de la creación y el equilibrio perfecto de formas y colores.
El día que tome estas fotografías en el Parque Michelena de la ciudad de Maracay, donde acostumbro caminar y llevar a Isis mi querida perrita, la época de sequia por supuesto había producido cambios en la vegetación. Pero estos cambios también tienen su belleza. El calor es intenso y no ha llovido en meses y todo ser vivo se adapta a estas condiciones.
Muchos árboles han perdido las hojas y están en época de fructificación. Me gusta ver sus ramas extendidas y hacer sombras en el suelo.
Los frutos del flamboyán un árbol muy típico de esta región, son unas vainas grandes y quedan colgando de las ramas como les muestro en esta fotografía donde el Ibis negro se ha detenido.
Las hierbas en el suelo esperan pacientes las lluvias para reverdecer y las hojas secas al caer de los árboles, han cubierto el suelo protegiéndolo y aportando nutrientes cuando se descompongan, para regresar de nuevo a la planta, en un ciclo continuo.
En este lugar viven muchas aves y sus cantos llenan el espacio. Hay una en especial que la veo durante todo el año buscando alimento en el suelo y generalmente andan en pareja. Pero en esta ocasión me fue dificil fotografiarla,
No podía acercarme mucho porque aún cuando no levantaba vuelo muy alto, corría y se alejaba pero además porque el color de su plumaje se confundía con el de la vegetación seca. Un mimetismo muy característico de muchos animales como mecanismo de protección.
Estas son las fotografías que pude tomar del alcaraván, que así se llama esta ave. Se que es difícil verlo pero fue lo mejor que me permitió la cámara de mi teléfono. Es un camuflaje perfecto.
