Birds Along the Way (Eng/Esp)
Dear bird-loving friends
I was walking through the streets of my city after attending a Pilates class with my daughter, enjoying the cool morning air and looking at the trees along the way. We stopped when we heard a flurry of chirping around a tree.
We saw several species of birds flitting about, while others were foraging on the ground.
I stepped closer to take some photos and spotted a pair of thrushes that seemed to be arguing. The male, with his glossy black plumage, was chasing the female—who is brown—flapping his wings; I’m not sure if he was courting her. When they saw me, the male took flight, and both flew off a short distance.
Canaries are calmer and used to people. It’s very common to see them in groups in many parts of the city; they’re birds with a beautiful song.
But the bird that caught my attention the most was one perched on a tree branch, looking alert. When I approached, it became agitated but didn’t fly away.
My daughter told me I was scaring it and that it was protecting its nest. I managed to take two photos of it and then walked away to leave it in peace. This is my favorite photo.
I looked up information to find out what kind of bird it was, since I didn’t recognize it, and the one that most closely resembles it is the Palm Cigua (Dulus dominicus), so named because it prefers palm trees—specifically the Royal Palm—where they build their nests.
I found it very interesting that their nests are communal—that is, shared by several pairs. I’d like to see one and take a picture of it. When I pass by that spot again, I hope to be able to do so.

Apreciados amigos de Feathered friends
Estaba caminando por las calles de mi ciudad, después de asistir a una clase de pilates en compañía de mi hija, disfrutando de la frescura de la mañana y observando los árboles en el camino. Nos detuvimos cuando escuchamos un alboroto de trinos alrededor de un árbol.
Vimos a varias especies de aves revoloteando y otras buscando alimento en el suelo.
Me acerqué para fotografiarlas y vi a una pareja de torditos que parecían discutir. El macho de color negro más brillante, no sé si estaba cortejando a la hembra, que es de color marrón, porque la perseguía moviendo las alas. Cuando me vieron, el macho levantó vuelo y ambos se alejaron un poco.
Los canarios son más tranquilos, acostumbrados a las personas. Es muy común verlos en grupos en muchos lugares de la ciudad; son aves de un canto muy hermoso.
Pero el ave que más me llamó la atención fue una que estaba en la rama del árbol, en actitud vigilante, y cuando me acerqué se alteró, pero no voló.
Mi hija me dijo que la estaba asustando y que estaba protegiendo su nido. Logré tomarle dos fotografías y me alejé para dejarla tranquila. Esta es mi fotografía favorita.
Busqué información para saber qué ave era, ya que no la conocía, y la que más se asemeja es la Cigua palmera (Dulus dominicus) llamada así porque tiene preferencia por las palmas, específicamente la Palma Real, donde hacen sus nidos. Me pareció muy interesante que sus nidos sean comunales, es decir, que los compartan varias parejas. Me gustaría ver uno y fotografiarlo. Cuando vuelva a pasar por ese lugar, espero poder hacerlo.
