Experiments in Mirror Photography

For one of our recent assignments in photography school, we were asked to explore mirror photography. The idea was to use mirrors in creative ways—whether for portraits, reflections, or abstract compositions. I decided to take on the challenge and do something simple but experimental.

I quickly realized that photographing with mirrors is trickier than it looks. The reflections can be unpredictable, and getting the right angle takes a lot of adjusting. What made it even more challenging was that I did everything by myself—setting up the mirror, placing the camera, trying to focus, and posing at the same time. Let’s just say there were many moments of trial and error!

Despite the difficulties, I had a lot of fun with it. Mirrors add this dreamy, almost surreal feeling to portraits. It became more than just a technical challenge—it felt like a personal exploration too, which I didn’t expect when I started.

All of the images I’m sharing here were taken indoors with natural light. Some shots came out a bit imperfect, but I think that’s part of the charm when experimenting like this.

All in all, this was a great way to push myself creatively and technically. Working alone with a mirror forces you to think differently about composition, space, and how you interact with the camera. I'm sharing here a few of the images I created—hope they spark some inspiration for your own creative photo experiments!
