Art Picnic on Owl Hill: Capturing Creativity and Community

This weekend I photographed the annual Art Picnic held on Owl Hill in Kaunas. Owl Hill is a well-known spot in the city, named after the sculpted owls that sit at the top of the hill. It’s a small park-like space, surrounded by trees and greenery, and every year it transforms into a lively gathering place for art, creativity, and community.

The Art Picnic brings together artists and creators from different fields, each offering something interactive for people to try. From watercolor and painting workshops to games, quizzes, and hands-on decorating activities, there was something for everyone, no matter their age. One of the most popular spots was the ceramic workshop, where people could shape and paint clay with their own hands.

This year, there was also a performance piece that stood out. A woman, fully covered in clay, lay on the ground as part of the artwork. Visitors were invited to join in by taking a brush and adding even more clay onto her. It was unusual, a little strange, but definitely a thought-provoking performance that caught people’s attention.

The event had a very warm, community-centered atmosphere. Families with children were everywhere, exploring and trying new activities together. Children laughed as they swung sticks at piñatas, while parents and grandparents watched and cheered them on. Dogs also ran around happily, adding to the relaxed and playful energy of the day.

What I really loved about the Art Picnic was how open and welcoming it felt. There was no pressure to be an artist or to create something “perfect.” It was more about the process, the joy of experimenting, and the shared experience of being creative together in a public space.

The surroundings of Owl Hill gave the event a special charm. With the owls looking down from above and the shade of the trees keeping people cool, it felt like a small, hidden world dedicated entirely to art and play. Even though it was simple, the combination of nature, creativity, and people made it feel magical.

Here are a few photos I captured during the Art Picnic. They show glimpses of the activities, the performers, and the cheerful community atmosphere that filled Owl Hill. For me, it was a reminder of how important it is to make space for art in our everyday lives — not just to watch, but to take part, play, and create.
