Mangosteen, the Queen of the Fruits

Good morning from Thailand on this Sunday!... 😀 I hope everyone starts your day fresh and encounters only good things. Do you like eating fruit? And what’s your favorite fruit?

Right now is the season for my absolute favorite fruit :mangosteen (Thai called Mang khut (มังคุด). It originates from Southeast Asia, and I’m not sure if neighboring countries in this region grow mangosteen trees. But in Thailand, it’s an economic fruit, widely cultivated in the southern and eastern regions because the geography and climate are perfect for it.

Mangosteen is honored as the Queen of Fruits due to its high nutritional value, delicious taste, and medicinal properties. Its pure white flesh and the crown-like calyx at the top give it a regal appearance, earning it this prestigious title in Thailand.

In the province where I live, fruit farming is very popular among locals. Many of my relatives own mangosteen orchards, and in the village, it’s common for households to have 2-3 mangosteen trees in their backyard for personal consumption. Mangosteen is a seasonal fruit, and right now is the harvest season.

Some mangosteen orchards have large-scale buyers who sign contracts to purchase the entire yield as soon as the fruits begin to form. For example, at my husband’s aunt’s orchard, after the buyers harvest the mangosteens, they leave behind overripe fruits (with shells turning black), undersized ones, and those that have fallen under the tree, allowing us to gather and eat them. 😁

What you see here are the mangosteens that my aunt brought to our house. There were actually more than this, but we’ve already eaten some.

For the ripe mangosteen with a green rind, it is still edible. The flesh will be crisp and fragrant, which we call "Mangkhut Khat". It’s delicious when eaten chilled or used in spicy salads (yam) and sour curry (kaeng som) absolutely tasty!!

When mangosteens are fully ripe, their skin becomes soft, pressing it will make it slightly sink in. These perfectly ripe mangosteens are sweet and juicy. They can also be used in various dishes, such as Mangosteen in syrup, Mangosteen jam , Preserved mangosteen, Candied mangosteen

I have been afraid of this fruit for nearly a decade because one day I opened one up to eat and there was a centipede that was living inside of it.

It's wonderful that you have relatives with mangosteen orchards and get to enjoy the leftover, perfectly ripe ones ✨ It's also fascinating to learn about its significance in Thailand. What a fantastic way to celebrate the harvest season! 💖

I think not many people know this is the queen though many people know what the kind is.
I heard the colour from the skin of the mangosteen is very difficult to wash off.

Yes, the color from mangosteen peel is indeed hard to wash off. That's why we use it to make dye for fabric. The color is beautiful. 😃 Thank you for your kindy support. Have a wonderful day!! 😍
