Just an hour's drive from Romania, in the neighboring country of Hungary, lies a quaint town called Mako, home to the Hagymatikum Spa. This spa is unique not only in its services but in its architecture as well. Open daily except for December 25th, the spa operates from 9 AM to 8 PM, but extends its hours until 10 PM on Fridays and Saturdays.

Mako is renowned for its onion cultivation, which amusingly inspired the spa’s design—its main building is shaped like an onion. However, a recent expansion that started in late March has added a new building equipped with its own reception and a changing area with lockers. This expansion includes a range of facilities like warm water pools, slides, massage services, a sauna, a restaurant, thermal baths, swimming pools, and even a wave pool that's set to open in May. I heard they were still working on it during my visit.

The thermal bath area has also been expanded to include a pool with an integrated bar, allowing you to enjoy a drink while immersed in the water. The newest and perhaps most intriguing feature is an exhibition and relaxation area, designed by an architect who drew inspiration from the legendary Atlantis. This space features a blend of plant life and statues, accentuated by water lighting and thoughtful design, creating a serene place to unwind.

The spa offers free parking, and the food there is exceptionally good. The staff speaks Hungarian, English, Serbian, and Romanian, catering to a diverse group of visitors. Interestingly, many Romanians prefer crossing into Hungary to visit this spa, especially over the weekend, as it offers better conditions, delicious food, and surprisingly, it’s more affordable than similar facilities in Romania.

You can choose to pay extra for the slides or sauna right at the entrance. Photographs taken with a mobile phone are a testament to the casual and inviting atmosphere of the place.

That’s it for today. Have a wonderful week!

I'm glad to see the thermal baths at Mako, I'm a bit ashamed, as I'm quite close to Mako and haven't got here yet, I hope in the near future to get here.
