Hace unos días una amiga me pidió buscar un medicamento homeopático en una de las farmacias del municipio Habana vieja, en la Habana, Cuba. Dicha farmacia se encuentra en una de las esquinas de las calles Luz y oficios, donde casualmente también se encuentra el Centro Provincial de Artes Pláticas y Diseño. No encontré el medicamento allí ni tampoco en otras 5 farmacias de la zona, que están casi vacías, pero aproveche la oportunidad de entrar al Centro y disfrutar de la exposición que ofrecen por estos días...

TU NO ME CONOCES, es la muestra personal del artista cubano Michel Mirabal, que exhibe el Centro en estos días hasta el 18 de enero del próximo año y ocupa varias salas de la institución.

Aquí pueden leer las palabras que los destacados curadores y criticos de arte cubanos, Nelson Herrera y Andrés Issac escribieron para esta exposición.

Llega entonces el momento para presentarles las obras de Michel. Esculturas, instalaciones, dibujos, fotografías son expresiones materiales de los que el artista aprovecha la fortaleza de la imagen visual para discursar de múltiples temas.Realmente no conozco su obra en profundidad, pero me ha resultado interesante la libertad creadora con la que el artista asume materiales y técnicas diversas...

Así se ve en esta primera instalación, realizada en este año, los diversos objetos colgados del techo en el espacio que ocupa la escalera que conduce a la mayor sala expositiva. Botas de trabajo, jarros metálicos, matrículas de carros y machetes se unen en esta instalación titulada: Lloviendo sobre mojado.

Como te ves? Es una obra donde el espectador se enfrenta a su propia imagen, una oportunidad para la autocomplacencia o la reflexión interna...

Ellos venían conmigo, es el título de esta fotografía realizada con la técnica de la impresión digital que demuestra la cantidad de recursos técnicos aprovechados en esta exposición.

Bidones con agua y municiones usadas son la base de esta instalación titulada: Agua tratada.

El Caminante, es un conjunto de fotografías realizado en el 2014, con la técnica de impresión digital.

El Reto, es esta larga mesa dividida en dos, una parte con mantel y la otra descubierta. Es la mesa de trabajo del artista y también una referencia a su formación como Chef. Es una mesa para rodearse de amigos y un lugar para la reconciliación.

La Rumba Prohibida. Instalación realizada con varias Tumbadoras envueltas con tela de yute y aseguradas con precinta. Según el artista cada tambor es un cuerpo, un corazón que late cubierto, que aún así quiere hablar.

Titulada: Producto Interno Bruto, esta instalación logra con pocos recursos (una máquina de moler mecánica y globos) una armonía estética esencial para discursar sobre un tema muy importante para la sociedad.

Esta obra escultorica llamó inmediatamente mi atención, por su terminación impecable y lo original de su diseño. Dependientes es una obra de 2025, realizada usando llaves de agua usadas y una ducha sobre una estructura de pleiser.

Estas dos obras realizadas con técnica mixta pertenecen a la serie: Escapando. Son como bocetos para obras tridimensionales y dejan entrever el oficio del dibujo de Michel.

Resiliencia es una palabra que se usa mucho en el actual contexto político cubano. Aquí el artista la usa como título para esta instalación cuya escala es semejante a la humana. Realizada usando acrílico, madera, luces led y una bandera cubana.

Se me antoja una granada esta obra escultorica conformada con tubos de escape. Una interesante solución formal titulada: Escapando. Esta situada en el patio del Centro artístico junto a otras instalaciones de gran escala donde Michel se apropia de elementos a escala real y da otra dimensión a sus obras.

Siguiendo con las apropiaciones Mirabal introduce un Chevrolet Bell Air de 1956 en el patio que lleva a bordo 8 espantapájaros y la imagen de algunos de ellos expuestas en una gran fotografía como un muro respaldando el mensaje de esta obra titulada: El asalto.

523 machetes y un Carruaje de Caballos del siglo XIX uso Michel para construir esta gran instalación concebida en el 2019 y titulada: Rebelión.

Un contenedor de 20 pies con las puertas abiertas a modo de escenario en el que cuelgan globos se convierte en la instalación titulada: Vacío, concebida en este 2025.

Nos quedan aún las obras presentadas en otra pequeñas salas que tiene el Centro. En la primera sala encontramos la instalación titulada: Día a día. Compuesta por una escultura en mármol y rodeada por 469 ollas de presión que crean un marcado contraste entre la elaboración clásica de la escultura y las ollas de manufactura industrial....

En la segunda la mayor instalación es: Y aún así soy libre. Una malla entretejida con alambre de púas crea una cárcel virtual que pretende enclaustrar las alas, símbolos de la libertad.

Tomaria mucho tiempo y espacio presentar todas las obras expuestas. Aquí les mencioné casi todas, para que puedan apreciar el trabajo de este artista.

Si vienen a la Habana, recuerden visitar este Centro en la esquina del casco histórico de la Habana vieja. Su programación de exposiciónes es continua y usualmente interesante. Espero que hayan disfrutado de la obra de Michel Mirabal, toda una revelación para mí y espero que para ustedes también.

YOU DON'T KNOW ME, is the solo exhibition of the Cuban artist Michel Mirabal, which the Center is exhibiting these days until January 18 of next year and occupies several rooms of the institution.

Now it's time to introduce you to Michel's work. Sculptures, installations, drawings, and photographs are material expressions through which the artist harnesses the power of the visual image to explore a wide range of themes. I'm not entirely familiar with his work, but I've found the creative freedom with which he approaches diverse materials and techniques quite interesting.

This is evident in this first installation, created this year, with its various objects hanging from the ceiling in the space occupied by the staircase leading to the main exhibition hall. Work boots, metal jugs, license plates, and machetes come together in this installation titled: Raining on Wet Ground.

How do you see yourself? It's a work where the viewer confronts their own image, an opportunity for self-indulgence or internal reflection...

"They Came With Me" is the title of this photograph made with the digital printing technique that demonstrates the amount of technical resources used in this exhibition.

Drums of water and used ammunition are the basis of this installation entitled: Treated Water.

The Walker is a collection of photographs made in 2014, using the digital printing technique.

The Challenge, is this long table divided in two, one part with a tablecloth and the other bare. It is the artist's work table and also a reference to his training as a chef. It is a table for gathering with friends and a place for reconciliation.

The Forbidden Rumba. An installation made with several conga drums wrapped in jute fabric and secured with tape. According to the artist, each drum is a body, a heart that beats covered, yet still wants to speak.

Titled: Gross Domestic Product, this installation achieves with few resources (a mechanical grinding machine and balloons) an essential aesthetic harmony to discuss a very important topic for society.

This sculptural work immediately caught my attention, due to its impeccable finish and original design. "Dependientes" (Dependents) is a 2025 work, created using discarded water taps and a shower on a Pleiser structure.

These two mixed-media works belong to the series: Escaping. They are like sketches for three-dimensional works and reveal Michel's skill as a draftsman.

Resilience is a word frequently used in the current Cuban political context. Here, the artist uses it as the title for this life-size installation, created using acrylic, wood, LED lights, and a Cuban flag.

This sculptural work made from exhaust pipes reminds me of a grenade. An interesting formal solution entitled: Escaping. It is located in the courtyard of the art center alongside other large-scale installations where Michel appropriates real-life elements and gives another dimension to his works.

Continuing with the appropriations, Mirabal introduces a 1956 Chevrolet Bel Air into the yard carrying 8 scarecrows and the image of some of them displayed in a large photograph as a wall supporting the message of this work entitled: The Assault.

Michel used 523 machetes and a 19th-century horse-drawn carriage to build this large installation conceived in 2019 and titled: Rebellion.

A 20-foot container with its doors open as a stage, from which balloons hang, becomes the installation entitled: Empty, conceived in 2025.

We still have the works presented in the Center's other small rooms. In the first room, we find the installation entitled: Day by Day. It consists of a marble sculpture surrounded by 469 pressure cookers, creating a striking contrast between the classical craftsmanship of the sculpture and the industrially manufactured pots.

In the second, the largest installation is: And yet I am free. A mesh interwoven with barbed wire creates a virtual prison that aims to confine the wings, symbols of freedom.

It would take too much time and space to present all the exhibited works. Here I've mentioned almost all of them, so you can appreciate this artist's work.
