Weather Photography: hunting sinister thunder storm

(Edited)

Hey there my Hive friends and followers!

In our country, April is known as the month with the craziest and most random weather. We actually even have an official term for it - the "April weather" and that means an extremely unpredictable and rapidly changing weather. Here in Central Europe, it´s pretty common in April to experience random mixtures of rain, sunshine, wind, snow and even hailstones, all of which can happen within a very short period of time, sometimes literally just within minutes.

So yeah, we are used to these "weather pranks" by Mother Nature in this part of the year but what happened here just a few days ago would actually be unusual even for April and it was not even April yet. It was just before the sunset when I noticed some really strange, dark clouds coming fast from the northwestern direction. I went to the balcony and clicked the first picture. It was 7:22 P.M.

I thought that it may have been it and went back to my room, glad that I at least have an interesting sunset picture for my next sunset photography collection. A few minutes later, however, I got curious about how the situation up in the sky panned out so I went to the balcony again. And this is what I saw. It was 7:29 P.M.

At this point, there were no doubts already that a massive thunder storm was about to sweep over us. The wind was picking up like crazy and first rain drops started to fall down from the dark sky. A few moments later, I clicked the final shot. It was 7:35 P.M.

Scenes like in an apocalyptic movie. An extremely powerful and sinister thunder storm raging over Prague. At the end of March. Crazy stuff.

But as I was staring at it, I realized that we experienced something even more bizarre a couple of weeks ago. I don´t have any pictures of that phenomenon because it all happened very fast and it was already after the sunset so it was dark outside but there was an actual thunder snow storm! I didn´t even know such things existed! Just imagine the sight: dark clouds, strong winds, snowing like crazy but with lightnings and thunders! We do have a lot of storms with lightnings and thunders here but always in summer only, they usually come after a period of very hot weather. It was the very first time in my life that I saw something like this happening in winter, amid a raging snow blizzard.

Talking about extreme weather, we have been also experiencing an increased occurrence of tornadoes recently here in the Czech Republic, which is something very disturbing too because tornadoes used to be extremely rare here. Obviously, the climate change is more evident than ever and I simply don´t understand how some people can still refuse to admit it...

As long as those thunderstorms don't have tornados! Great photos, very cool!

In fact, there was a tornado that day in another part of our little country. Glad that you liked the shots!

Our troublesome month is March. We say;

March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb.

The clouds in the last photo is very terrifying. A strong wind then rain was to come.

That´s an interesting saying :) Spring obviously comes earlier to Turkey than here but it´s ok given the location :) Thanks for stopping by my friend!

The pics did well in conveying what you're explaining! Witnessing that weather combination must be very startling. Mother Nature is always playing abnormal games with us these days. I heard that there was a time in which Saudi Arabia experienced snow. It's so unreal and incoherent.

Right. I have read and heard of unusual weather phenomena from many places all over the world. The climate change is more real than ever, affecting everyone on this planet. And yet some people deny it... Crazy world.

Crazy world indeed! Denying something that's affecting you both directly and indirectly. Maybe if the effects become severe enough then they will believe it.

Nice pictures! And you are absolutely right, here in Poland it's the same, it amazes me how the sun lasts a few minutes and then it gets dark and later raining. Or one day it's 13 degrees or more with sunshine and the other -1 falling snow hahaha. I call it bipolar weather hahaha.

Bipolar weather, hahaha, that´s cool :D Yeah, early spring is crazy in this part of the world. But no worries, it will get more stable and warmer later on and in May, the temperatures can already go up to as high as 30 C ;) Then, in summer, you will feel like back home in Venezuela :) Except the heat here is not so humid, rather just dry :D

Hahaha yes I love that in May the temperatures rise, because it's my birthday hahahaha. And about the summer, Pawel told me, I hope to survive that great heat like I did with the cold winter hahaha. Although I'm sure I do, my dad was from the hottest part of Venezuela (Zulia state), and so we lived there for a while, imagine with those high temperatures (40 degrees sometimes) and no electricity. That was hell :(

You are from a tropical country, you will have no troubles surviving European summer :D ;) I can imagine what those summers in Zulia felt like, sounds exactly like summer in Yucatan, Mexico. Real feel temperature around 40 C during the day and 30 C in the night. I thought I was gonna die there :D

You're right hahaha! Ahhhh and I don't want to imagine how you felt in Yucatan :(

Yeah, it´s called a time lapse but it usually includes more photos taken with smaller time intervals between them. I have just these 3 :)

Impressive images unfolding in the skies of Prague. What you witnessed is the rare phenomenon known by meteorologists as "thunder snow."

I've never experienced it start out as a rainstorm then turn to snow this late (or early?) in the year. Very cool! Mother Nature definitely was in a unique mood!

Happy Sunday and a great weekend ahead! @phortun

A thunder snow? Wow! So it´s an official meteorologic phenomenon, thanks for telling me :) Glad you liked the pictures despite their ominosity :) Happy Sunday and a successful week ahead to you too Nina!

The climate is constantly changing, nothing is static and it is only fools who cannot accept this.

The fruit trees in my country are a bit confused, or rather we are, they are loading fruit at the wrong time and then the harvest fails.

Your photos are beautiful in spite of the fearfulness of it all.

Very good points, the climate change has been so confusing and detrimental for nature... Plants and trees sometimes waking up too early from winter and then getting destroyed by later frosts etc... Thanks for sharing your thoughts and checking out the photos!

That´s a nice one and very true :) Btw you know what´s also funny? "Kwiecen" is the same like ours "květen" but while your kwiecen is April, our květen is actually May :D I was so confused when I first came across this discrepancy :D It was on a bus in Krakow, I looked up on the display to check out what time it was and I saw kwiecen there, it felt like time traveling for a second :D

Yes, the only explanation is climate change and it is the fault of humans. But as you said, nobody accepts it. Strange things are happening in Turkey too. I'm not talking about the earthquake, the weather hasn't warmed up yet. I'm sure it was quite hot in my city this time last year and I'm still sitting in a sweater. That's not normal. I hope things will get better in time but I don't think so. Photographs are great btw.

Well, I didn´t say that nobody believes that the climate change is real, I said there are still some people who refuse to admit it. They usually argue that the climate has always been changing on Earth and that´s right but the speed at which it´s changing these days is like 1000x faster than what would be natural and it undoubtedly was caused by inconsiderate human activities and exploitation of the planet. I´m sorry about what happened in your country recently but I´m afraid we can expect a lot more natural disasters to occur all over the world... We reap what we sow.

I agree, my friend. My point was the same as yours. The faster we destroy nature, the more violent nature's response will be.

Well it did start as a nice sunset, I really like the first photo, I agree the other look a little stormy. April showers bring may flowers.

Oh geez, thunder snow storm, these things are a curious phenomenon indeed. Only ever seen it once when I was a kid and I was walking home from a friends house and it was weird lightnings with green, purple, pink, blue lightnings and they were fierce too. I was so scared, maybe like 10 years old, it was middle of winter... We don't get thunderstorms in the winter.

A fierce thunder snow storm with colorful lightnings?! Really?! And I thought what I saw was crazy... What you witnessed back then must have been some disturbingly exceptional phenomenon. Mother Nature never fails to amaze...

What you saw was probably crazy for where you live and what you have experience and it probably was crazy and might not even see that again. Keep in mind, here has been a lot of solar flares and strong ones, who knows what it does in geomagnetic standpoint. I would bet it can probably affect lightning storms and such. Mother nature does some strange things for sure omg.
