Architectural Photography: the picturesque Old Town Square in Prague

(Edited)

Hi there my Hivean friends and followers!

I hope you are ready for another Prague post today because here I´m coming with one :) This time around, we will take a look at the picturesque Old Town Square. Yes, as the name sugests, it´s located in the very historic heart of the city and yes, it´s usually super crowded but it´s considered one of the absolute must-sees here so I will take you there too, even though these highly touristy spots are not exactly my kind of places :)

Now in terms of the area, the Old Town Square is smaller (much smaller in fact) than the nearby and just as famous Wenceslas Square but when it comes to the architectural beauty and value, the Old Town Square definitely has the upper hand here. When walking around the square, it literally feels like traveling back in time as you can see buildings here that date back to a variety of different centuries and architectural styles.

There is another historic feature that this square is famous for and that´s the medieval astronomical clock known as Prague Orloj that can be found on the wall of the Old Town Hall. The clock has been there since as early as 1410, which makes it the world´s oldest astronomical clock that is still working. Pretty cool, right? :)

The Old Town Hall is open to public (for a fee of approximately 10 USD) and the visitors can enjoy some truly amazing views of the city from the top of the tower. I might climb up there too some other time but for today, let me just show you what the square looks like from the ground level ;)

I hope you enjoyed the shots of the Old Town Square in Prague. As you could notice in the pictures, there is always a lot going on on the square with vintage limos and horse carriages with tourists driving around. However, the largest crowd is usually in front of the astronomical clock as there is this little show by the figures of the Death and the 12 Apostles performed every hour. I took the picture of the clock for you without the tourists, you probably recognized this cool piece of medieval engineering in photo number 10.

Thanks for your attention everyone and please stay tuned for more posts from this beautiful European city that will show up here on my blog in future ;)

Is this recent? It's great to see everything back to normal (ish) again with loads of people about.

It is. Some 3 weeks ago. Things have been back to normal here for quite some time already :)

I guess they didn't expect anyone to tell them it's time to get back to normal.

Prague is definitely on my photography must-see list! You isolated the crowd well / as much as possible / otherwise I don't like crowded tourist destinations either.

Well done, I like it! 👋

Thanks man! Means a lot coming from a great photographer like you :) Yeah, it´s only rarely that I venture into these touristy areas of the city as most of the time, I explore the natural sites with much fewer people around. But visitors of the city usually want to see the center so I´m offering the same to the visitors of my blog :) Thanks again, I hope you will make it here to Prague soon, it´s a very photogenic city.

The architecture of this city is very beautiful. I always wanted to photograph this type of architecture. But there is no such architecture in our country. I am happy to be here and see your beautiful photos

Aww, thank you :) Well, I´m sure that Iran also has some beautiful architecture, yet probably very different from ours :) I hope you will make it here one day so that you can take some nice pictures of our buildings too :)

Visited in winter. Always, ALWAYS so crowded! But still the experience is irreplaceable so it's fine :D

Right. One of the most famous (and thus crowded :D) spots in our country so one always has to expect some company over there :D

Squares are my favourite places! I think I would spend half a day there taking at least 100 photos&selfies to find the best ones :)

Great photos mate! I feel like Prague is calling me :) Thank you.

Oh really? :D I did the exact opposite, just clicked those few shots as fast as I could and run away from the crowd :D But yeah, Prague is calling you, I can hear that too :D ;)

The old town of Prague is very beautiful, only good for a walk through its streets, I admit that I wanted to visit Prague during the Christmas market, but the pandemic changed my plans.

Sorry to hear that but you can come now, there have been no restrictions here at all for quite some time already ;)

I'm already thinking about which Christmas Market I will visit this year and Prague with the Christmas Market there is on my short list.
Have a wonderful weekend.

I see. Well, as for the Christmas markets, I can recommend Prague, Vienna and Krakow. All of those are amazing but with tons of people of course :)

It reminds me of the "liberty" style of some European cities.

Liberty style? What do you mean? :)

The most notable examples of Liberty architecture can be found in Barcelona but also in Italy. In other countries they are called Art Nouveau.

I’m going to be in Prague for a few days soon on a business trip. Very excited about it because we will set some time aside to have a bit of an explore, some food and drink no doubt. I’ll take some photos and write about it. Though it may be more a case of doing that when I get back to England!!

I love how all those buildings and the colors of the city look under that clear blue sky 😊

Yeah :) Maybe not as many colors as I saw on buildings in Latin America but still a decent spectacle ;) Especially on a sunny day, that´s right.

So, you have been here un Latin America, cool! Which countries have you visited?

Yeah, like I said before, we lived in Mexico for 2 years :) During that time, we also visited a couple of other countries like Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Guatemala, the Dominican Republic... We love Latin America! :)

I remember you told me once about Mexico, not the other countries. That's cool although you still need to visit the most beautiful country in America, Venezuela 😎🏖️🏔️🏜️🌅⚡😁 we have everything, beach, mountain, plain, desert, snow, jungle, lakes, rivers, forest, tepuis, waterfalls, what else can I say? 😎😉

I would love to! I have seen so many amazing places from Venezuela in various posts here on Hive :) However, I think Costa Rica will stay my Nr. 1 country as the richness of wildlife over there is unparalelled anywhere in the world (per square kilometer). Fascinating little country :)

I accept that answer only because you don't know Venezuela 😎 🤭🤭🤭
