Walks During the Road Trip...

If you did a long road trip somewhere, you know that you have to take breaks while you are driving... When someone other is driving, it looks so easy to do it, but actual driving can be very tiring... And as you get older, it is more and more the case that you have to take breaks more often... I remember when I was younger I did a 6-7 hour drive in one take, without taking any break, and it was during the night! There is no way that I can repeat that today... lol...

01.jpg

Recently, I have tried to make myself take breaks after 2-3 hours of driving... When my eyes get "sticky" that's the "last call" to take one... So, when I'm around that time, I look more closely to the next gas station to stop, but I search for that 🍴 (cutlery) or 🎁 (gift) signs... Not because I want to eat or to buy a souvenir, but because those stops have more "things to see"... They may have a park, or resting area, or a forest trail...

02.jpg

When I get out of the car I don't want to sit again, but rather stretch or take a walk, as in that way, I rest better! Sometimes these stops are small and there is no space to do something like that, but sometimes, they can be very interesting and you can enjoy walking around...

03.jpg

What I found interesting in these road trips that I do almost every year is that among the countries that I pass through, France has the best-arranged car stops... You have a gas station, you have small tables outside, like in the park, and very often, you have a small trail where you can take a walk...

04.jpg

This July, we were resting in the Aire de Manosque and it was one of those places... You can follow the link to find out where it is, or you can check out the map below... If you check that link, you will see that there is a "monument" in that place, but it wasn't there this year... lol... I saw only that building which was like a small open theater, or a picnic place (not sure which one of those two 😃)... If you scroll up, you can see that white building behind the tree (2 photos up)...

06.jpg

As it was too boring there, I went for an "offroad" walk where not many people were going... 😃 I couldn't go too far as the motorways in Europe are always "fenced" you have to hit the wall at a certain time...

07.jpg

08.jpg

09.jpg

10.jpg

This was another road on the "other side", behind the fence... Behind the road, and these small trees is a river Durance and it would be great if they didn't "close" this part for people that come from the highway... I bet it's beautiful by the water...

11.jpg

12.jpg

13.jpg

As I hit the end of my road, I went back and tried to photo some plants around it... As not many people come there, it looks like they don't do maintenance of that part at all... Which is even better... Leaving nature to do the job is most of the time the best way...

14.jpg

These benches are human-made, that's for sure... :)

18.jpg

19.jpg

20.jpg

As you are already used to seeing, I like to photograph nice pinecones whenever I find some interesting and nicely shaped ones...

21.jpg

It's time to move on and continue the trip... The next stop wasn't planned, but we saw this beautiful lake from the car and on the map, and we had to stop to see it better! It was on the same day, on our way to the French-Italian border...

22.jpg

23.jpg

I missed the stop, so I have to improvise... This wasn't a gas station stop, or anything similar, and as this was an ordinary road, it was much easier to stop... This was an exact place where I parked the car...

24.jpg

25.jpg

26.jpg

To get to the place where I took these photos, I had to go through a small forest of young pine trees, but it was worth doing it! Look at those views!!! That is Lac de Serre-Ponçon and it was very busy on it... People were wind-surfing, and kayaking, I saw a couple of small boats too...

27.jpg

28.jpg

29.jpg

This was the trail for going back to the car and civilization... 😃

The next day, we continued our trip, but I wasn't in the mood to take photos as that was my third day of driving... 😃 So, the next two photos were taken somewhere in Slovenia, in one of the gas stations on the main highway, but I can't remember the exact location... So no Google Maps for this one...

32.jpg

The last photo today comes from a random Italian gas station... If you are interested, you can even see the gas prices in the photo (from the end of July 2023)... There wasn't too much to see, only what you see in the photo and a small shop... What I have noticed traveling on this route is that these car stops are the best in France as you have a lot more space to walk, rest, maybe take lunch in nature, etc... So, if you are traveling through France, don't forget to check some of these places... You can check out them on Google Maps and see what you can expect, but even if you do it as I did it (randomly), you will probably discover some of the gems...

Next year, I will try to be more systematic, take notes of exact places, and take more photos!

Thank you for your time! I hope you enjoyed the walk,

~ph~

Those are some great snaps. You found some really nice places to stop there. I also feel that I can't drive so long as I used to, now I had to rope my wife into doing some of the driving too.

Hehehe... I sometimes get sick if I'm not driving (or it's just my excuse to NOT let my wife drive... lol...), but she was driving last year a good chunk of the road trip as I was traveling sick! I had no choice... 😂

Ohh I can relate about needing more stops same for me nowadays I if we go on a trip like a stop every couple of hours or so, but back when I was younger could drive for hours, I remember one work trip we did a 14 hour trip we did non stop, got there hooked up the trailers we were there to get, a one hour break and then drove back

dang that makes me tired just thinking about it lOL

Thanks for joining the Wednesday Walk :)

I remember one work trip we did a 14 hour trip we did non stop

I remember I did that once... It was around 14 hours without any break... I was in my twenties, but I remember that when I got out of the car I could barely walk... lol... 😃

But having a trip like that, and just a 1-hour break and driving back... That's a challenge that I couldn't take... lol...

that was way back in my twenties and there was a convoy of us and we had radios so were chatting away which helped but we were all exhausted and achy when we got back for sure

Wow! That has to be fun! I was watching movies on TV where people would do the thing with walkie-talkies... 😃 But never did it...

Indeed, the more we get older the more we need to rest. A beautiful place! I would put my chair towards the sea and drink my beer 🍺

That was a lake, not a sea... But, in either way, it looks great... Maybe I would take a longer break there in the future... and stay for a couple of days...

I will try to do a better job on my next road trip... Sometimes, it's hard to take photos when you're already tired of driving... :)
Thanks for your curation!

It was indeed a long drive and you really need to stop and rest for a while. Stopping at a place with lots of beautiful things to see especially natures is the best because it also relaxes your mind.

You had a great shot of different creations around.

Thank you! I like those gas stations and surroundings, especially in France... They build those resting places huge... :) Always nice to take a walk around!

I never knew driving was tiring. I used to think it was very enjoyable and I knew I was wrong when I began to drive.
It can be tiring indeed

It is enjoyable to do it for a certain time, but when you do it all day, for multiple days, it becomes tiring... And these rest stops help in recharging...

Whole Europe is fenced somehow. Great you Take much time for such rests.
Most people only make short rest, having only in mind to reach their destiny instead of enjoying the path.
Hey, thats also something to consider while thinking about the purpose?

I suppose that the highways are fenced so that people don't skip paying the road fees... 😃

I enjoy exploring new towns and cities on the road trip... That's why very often pick different towns/cities to stay in, and mix these gas stations and resting places too... When I was younger I was focused on my destination and was always hurry to reach it ASAP... Now, I take these trips more easily and try to enjoy the journey itself!

Hey, thats also something to consider while thinking about the purpose?

Hehehehe... Definitely... Enjoy small things down the road... 😃

It's not that much stress... It is more tiring, but taking breaks helps... and discovering beautiful places on the journey!

By going to such places a person becomes very happy and relaxed. All these places are very beautiful after seeing the natural scenery, especially the mountains are very happy.

Well, as time goes by, car trips are like you say, you have to take breaks more often because even though driving is an action that is done sitting down and does not involve much physical effort, after hours it is quite tiring.

What great pictures you managed to capture of those places, I thought they were great and what beautiful places.

Yeah, it's not a physical effort, but I suppose that paying attention on the road and what happens around takes a lot of energy... It seems easy, but it's not...

Thank you for your kind words! I will try to take more photos on the next road trip!

That lake was astonishing! To be honest, I didn't even pay attention to my itinerary before going on that trip, so I didn't notice the lake at all... But, the next time, I will plan the stop there for sure!
