I suppose people could throw things for multiple reasons... Maybe those paintings were left off by a person renting the apartment, or they died, or it was just due to a lack of free space at home... I would probably keep them as a memory, but again, if you don't have space, you have to throw something...
I had a similar experience to yours... A few months ago, while I was walking on the street, I noticed tw framed paintings on the side of a dumpster, so I didn't have to take them out... 😃 My wife and I liked them a lot that, in the end, we brought them home, and now they are hung on the wall of our living room! The motifs on the paintings perfectly fit the rest of the room... 🍻
It's true when they say... Someone's trash is someone's else treasure... 😃

Thanks for your version of the story. It's possible. Just as two friends might have had a falling out and one of them threw away the other's gifts. I can think of many more versions like that.
