Memories of Den Haag Walks .:. The Dutch Adventure

avatar

It has passed almost a full month since I visited the Netherlands, where I was attending #HiveFest! It was my first visit to that country and before I went there, I was determined that I will try to see as many as possible things there... Including different cities! That was one of the reasons why I stayed in one place, attended Hive Fest in another place, and flew back from a third place... :) In that way, I have seen 3 beautiful cities in the Netherlands, Amsterdam, Den Haag, and Eindhoven!

Today, on this #WednesdayWalk, I will walk around Den Haag with you! These photos were taken on the last day of Hive Fest when we had almost a whole day "free", and later on, we had a final day dinner... Also, I have added to this post my "next day" walk, when I went to the train station and left Den Haag...

01.jpg

This photo is my favorite from all that I took on my stay... This canal was very close to my friend's home where I was situated and I could enjoy this view every time I would go out of the apartment...

02.jpg

From the day I arrived, I was planning to have a walk around Haag with my friend who lives there, but neither of us had time, and when we had, it was raining! :) But, the thing with rain in the Netherlands is that it rains now, but in just 15 minutes it could stop... and vice-versa... So, we began our "walk" by drive... lol... While it was raining, he was driving and explaining some of the most "important" buildings and parts of the city...

03.jpg

In general, Haag is a beautiful city, which I would rather call a "big town"... Most of the buildings are actually houses, usually with a front garden, and probably a backyard...

04.jpg

Den Haag is one of the "lucky" cities in the Netherlands as it has the most beautiful (and biggest) beach in the country... As it was raining and it was very windy, I couldn't make a good photo of it... But, believe it or not, there were people who have used this weather for sail surfing... brrrrr... Btw. it was so cold (for me), that my friend gave me his winter jacket to wear, as mine wasn't warm enough... lol...

05.jpg

06.jpg

This photo needs additional explanation... 😃 From the moment we left the car, my friend invited me to the "special dish" specific to that area... But, he has warned me like 10 times that nobody from his "outside" friends didn't like it... And most of them have to spit it!! So, he asked me to promise to not spit it even before I knew what it will be! After that "scary" introduction, I didn't know what to expect... lol...

07.jpg

So, we sit in this small restaurant and ordered the Dutch Herring! If I have understood well it is a marinated herring, usually served with onions (at least I think it was that 😃 )... As my father is a fisherman (although on the river), I have eaten fish all my life, so I enjoyed this one too! So, if someone tries to scare you with something, try it! Who knows what can happen? 😃

08.jpg

Look at the Grand Hotel Amrâth Kurhaus, built between 1884 and 1885... Unfortunately, almost right after the opening, it was caught by the fire and seriously damaged, so it was rebuilt between 1886 and 1887... Now, in front of the building, you can find many restaurants, and bars, along the whole beach...

09.jpg

As it was raining again, we sit in the car and went down to the city center... But, I have no idea in which part of the city center we have gone... lol... I was juggling with an umbrella in one hand, and the mobile phone in another, following my friend in front... Luckily, I did some photos, but without knowing what they are... But, we have google maps, so I did my research... In the image above, you can find the Statue of William of Orange

10.jpg

Directly on the other side of the street, you can find Noordeinde Palace, the working building of the Dutch King...

11.jpg

12.jpg

13.jpg

On the right side of these 2 photos, you can see the Ministry of General Affairs, the Dutch Parlament, and all the other important "offices"...

14.jpg

15.jpg

16.jpg

17.jpg

This was an interesting mural on the wall that got my attention, so I had to take a photo!

18.jpg

After lunch, on our way back to the car, we met these two tall women promoting something (have no idea what it was), but it was interesting to see... :)

19.jpg

20.jpg

The rest of the photos were taken the next day when it was much better weather... The irony was that it was my last day (or better said half of a day) in Den Haag, as I had to travel to Eindhoven that afternoon...

21.jpg

22.jpg

Another look at the beautiful canal that is situated right in front of my friend's apartment...

23.jpg

The street where I was "living" for 4 days... (the canal is on the right, behind the trees)

24.jpg

25.jpg

Most days I was in a hurry to catch the train to Amsterdam or to catch the tram to get home, but that day, I had the whole morning to enjoy the city as I had to be in Eindhoven late in the afternoon...

26.jpg

27.jpg

Look at Our Lady Immaculate Conception Eland Church from 1892...

28.jpg

29.jpg

30.jpg

31.jpg

...and this was my last photo from beautiful Den Haag! I went to catch my train for Eindhoven, from where I had a plane back to Spain the next day... But, I had half of this day, and the morning next day to explore my third city in this year's "Dutch tour" 😃

Farewell, Den Haag! It was nice to meet (and explore) you and I hope I will be back someday in the future!

PS. Don't forget to check out other #WednesdayWalk posts from other members of the community... Thanks, @tattoodjay for creating this great place where we can share our walks!

Thank you for your valuable time,

Very cool walk around that area. Many locations I know.
I lived in the Netherlands for the largest part of my life, 28 years. I’m Dutch.
So cool to see you tried the “Hollandse Haring” Dutch herring. Not many, from outside of Dutchy land, likes it. It is salted /marinated, frozen and than served. Haven’t had it in a long time. It is delicious especially with the little onions. 😊
Yes, one should always try new things, sometimes you taste something amazing.

Thanks for sharing @ph1102 have a great evening 👋🏻

I didn't know that you are Dutch! Remind me why you didn't go to the Hive Fest this year.

I'm glad that you liked these photos and maybe you should explain them instead of me... :)

Hahaha special you 🤩😎

Born in France though 😉 but Dutch passport… like I said, I lived in 5 countries so far. 2 before the Netherlands.

I couldn’t go as we were right in the middle of moving house, old rental into this temporary rental until our country move soon (hopefully next month). I’m still sitting literally between packed boxes 📦 80% is still packed. Luckily not much work to do the remaining stuff.
I really would have loved to go. Also another thing, I’m not that long on hive < 1 year.
Will try next year 😎 hope to have settled by than hahaha 🤣

You did just fine 🤓😉
Good evening 👋🏻 @ph1102

Fantastic travel pictures! I love smoked herring but have never had salted herring. I imagine that it is good... Especially with onions. Thanks for the tour!

What a nice walkthrough of your visit. I've only been to the Netherlands one time and I didn't get to try the herring, so it's definitely on the list to try. I don't think I'll try the fish in one go though hahaha, just a piece.

hahhahaha... I didn't eat it in one go, but I was explained that you eat it like that... Take it for the tail and slowly take bites from the bottom... Those were actually two herrings, but it's not visible in the photo...
Check it out: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soused_herring

The picture with the onions and herring on bread also looks appetizing.
Hahaha and I'll try to remember that advice.

Awesome, I lived in Eindhoven for 14 years. I studied there at the university of applied sciences and stayed after I graduated.

I went to Eindhoven that afternoon, stayed in a hotel for 1 night, explore a bit the city next day, and caught my flight in the afternoon... But, "exploring" the city was with a suitcase, so I was just wandering around... lol...

Yeah, Amsterdam is huge... I suppose that for some "decent" visit, you would need at least a week to check it out... :)
